I think it would be nice for there to be punch and kick AB files in combat, so the newbies have that information easily accessible.
Hrm... guess that's it really.

Isn't there something like HELP NEWBIEATTACKS? Not sure if that's the exact file though.
Unknown2006-01-26 22:51:01
Aetolia did something like this in Survival.
AB SURVIVAL FISTICUFFS
Syntax:
PUNCH
KICK
You can use the basic skills of fighting to take down an opponent.

Nice, I like that. The way I see it, if you're new, you're having the skills system drilled into your head by your guild.
Random novice is much more likely to look at AB COMBAT BRAWLING than HELP NEWBIEATTACKS. Heck, when I was new, it took me forever to realize there was a help index.

In Aetolia you have to learn lessons to be able to kick and punch
Richter2006-01-26 23:06:07
I don't remember that.
(they should still do it though, and have those first two learned by default)
Diamondais2006-01-26 23:10:09
I remember having to learn someodd amount of lessons in the tutorial, I dont know why else I would think it. None of the other Muds Ive played do that. And plus it was the only thing they went over for survival.

Hrm.. how is that any different from learning 3 discernment from the old man? And I am pretty sure they don't waste the lessons anyways.
Unknown2006-01-26 23:40:08
Why bother though? I would rather they had to ask someone else how to kick and punch if they've forgotten from the intro, and then at least they can be informed they shouldn't be using them. Rather than wasting a lot of time thinking that they are using viable attacks.
Daganev2006-01-27 02:42:42
When you have no weapon its a very viable attack!
besides, legs stance shouldn't be default, punch and kick should be!

They could add the learning to the tour and have you choose a path of more violence/less peace (learn Combat to get Brawling and thus kick/punch) or less violence/more peace (learn Influence to get something to easily influence finks and gnomes maybe?).
... okay. Bad idea, but I just really wanted to say it out loud.

No, actually, that's kind of neat. It might fit Fable better than Lusternia, but I like it.
Caighan2006-01-28 09:05:20
hrm... can you even influence the finks and gnomes in Newton?

Could when I was a novice. Used to beg from 'em and kill them afterwards, double exp, yo.

You have the first skill of every skillset, which in this case is begging.

You have gained the following abilities in Influence:
Debating Match wits with others in a clash of egos.
Not quite.

Thing is.. we don't actually -want- the newbies to punch and kick things. I want them to Cast Elemental Blasts at gnomes and finks.. if they kick them and punch them, they'll be there all day.

Begging is 5 lessons into influence, I think, although a newbie can just spend the 90 lessons to get Supplication already. And Aiakon, you forgot about Knight newbies who have to punch and kick since their bashing is so wimpy, although they're better off questing and influencing until they're out of novicehood, then buying 2000 credits to trans Knighthood and buy artie weapons, which is, apparently, the only way to survive as a knight.

Wrong, on the knight newbies part at least. Give 'em a two-handed weapon, and if they've specialized, they'll mow through finks and gnomes. Not QUITE as good as blast and nature curse and the like, may take 2-3 swings, but it just means they lose a little bit of health instead of a little bit of mana. It's so much better than it used to be (to the point where I regularly guild inventory novices to see if they have a weapon, and if they don't, ambush them with a gift. )
