The word Librarian sounds too mundane. The title and the entire ministry should be changed to fit the word Historian.
Unknown2006-01-31 06:51:47
Not all books in a library deal with history.. so um.. I disagree?
Unknown2006-01-31 07:06:05
I like the guild's Archivist, or whatever it is.

Stories, fables, myths and so on are all apart of a cultures history. Greek mythology is just a bunch of story but it plays a part in Greek history. There are also American fables that play apart in history.

How about... Bibliothec! It means the same thing as a librarian.

Bibliotech?
How about we just change the name of the ministry to something fitting for each community:
Seren : Bookworm
Celest: Watermarker
Magnagora: Anti-propoganda department of illiteracy
Glomdoring: ... Nothing matters but Glomdoring! There is no Ministry!

Only if you don't speak French. And I'm with Ialie.. it sounds horrible.
I think Librarian is precisely the right word. Historian is plainly wrong when people are writing fiction, or treatises on herbs, or scientific analyses of the current situation, and changing everything to fit that title would unnecessarily restrict us.
An Archivist is a keeper of archives. i.e a place where old/historical records are kept. That makes perfect sense for the Guilds, where we can presume there have been books and records stored and mouldering for many centuries. It does not make so much sense for Libraries, when 99% of the contents has been written in the past 10 years.
There's nothing as perfect as simplicity. Librarian is the right word, and there's nothing to be gained by coming up with any number of weighty titles, most of which won't fit the job description as tightly.

Book Keeper.

Keeping track of your countries fables. myths, and legends, even gossip about great scandles. That is part of being a historian as well all books reguardless if they are fictional or not serve a part in the history of a nation. Greek Myths, roman myths, ancient indian legends, the story of Babe the blue ox and other things, keeping track of those things as well as the truth is part of being a historian.
ferlas2006-01-31 17:29:56
Lore Keeper then? It covers pretty much all books past and present and it does sound quite cute as well?
Unknown2006-01-31 17:35:48
I don't think any of this is necessary seeing as it's just nitpicking.
Now excuse me while I run from Ialie.

Librarian's fine and fitting, no change is needed imho.

Yeah right. The best title is obviously
LOREMASTER
Duh.

So is collecting matchboxes. It's a matter of intention. If you wish to keep your books as a testament to your time, then by all means do: but put them somewhere secret and out of sight where no one can touch them and damage them. The Great Libraries are public lending libraries, where anyone in a city/commune can take books out. Completely different idea.
