Ok, I just got my computer on the family network and I'm trying to get my sound to work. It worked at one point but now.. it's dead or something. It says the music is playing, the speakers are on, it's not muted, and I have disabled the one music thingy that isn't working correctly (I have 2). And still nothing..

Press start, and go into Programs. Go into accessories, and then entertainment from within that - and choose volume control.
Make sure you're not on zero volume overall there.

The adapter is plugged in, but are your speakers (into the tower/CPU)? Are you getting "noise" or just nothing?
Edit: Well, I guess you'd get get "noise" either way so maybe this wasn't even worth saying. :/

It appears my sister (original owner of the hard drive I'm using) has done something and now there is no Accessories folder.

Yeah, I'm getting the static in the background type noise.

Well, to restore the Accessories folder just go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and then to "Add/Remove Windows Components" then click "Accessories and Utilities." Afterwards just hit "next" and it should re-install.
As for the sound.. if you can get to "Master Volume" I'd check the "Mixer Device" to make sure it is set to the working one and not the disabled.
Aside from going to Master Volume and doing it that way, you can also go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices, and then under the Audio tab to change the default device too.
Other than it being disabled I can't think of anything else since it was just recent.
Edit: You can also right-click "My Computer," click Properties, and go under the Hardware tab. After that click "Device Manager" and go under "Sound, video, and game controllers." There you can right click your default and enable it if not already enabled. If there's a problem with it the little sound thingy might have a yellow exclaimation point by it.

What version of Windows are you using?

It says I already have the assories folder.. but it's not there.
I only have one sound device after removing the faulty one and it says it is working and active. It is enabled and no little exclamation point.
I'm on Win98.

The folder might be hidden, but you can still get to the volume control, anyhow.
Go into start again, and click on search - from their, you're going to need to look for volume control and wait for the search - when it pops up, click on it. The window for it should open and you should be able to check and see if it has been lowered to the point you can't hear the sound because of it - and change it as well.

Ok. none of this is working. The volume is up all the way. I'm just going to say that it's the old speakers and go find some non- ones.
-nodme- Damn speakers.
EDIT: Watch your language. ~Shiri~

For the volume control you can just try running C:\\Windows\\System32\\sndvol32.exe
If that doesn't help then check your drivers. Unfortunately (or fortunately actually) I don't have Win98, and don't remember the exact layout of things there, but maybe someone can give you the exact directions to the hardware settings thingy there. I find that whenever something stops working it is almost always due to a driver getting messed up.
And yeah, I'd heed Wesmin's advice and upgrade your sister to a newer version. As well as your Windows.

Yess... pirate software. It's the way to go!
(When I'm 30 I'm sure there'll be a backlog of everything I've downloaded on every IP and I'll spend years and years in jail.. or not! In your dreams, Federal Government! )
Edit: Oh right! We still have an issue.
I'd have to agree with Avator. Your speakers aren't damaged (At least the adapter wire isn't) from what I can tell, and if your devices are in check and your drivers are fine then by default I'd check the audio plug from your speakers to PC.
Um.. other than that.. I don't know.. if it worked before then..

Make sure your speakers are plugged into the speaker jack, and not the audio output jack. Alternately, make sure it's in the audio output jack instead of the speaker jack.
They use different length jacks and while a standard 1/8th inch cable will fit into an audio output, it isn't going to connect properly. I'm assuming your speakers have a jack that looks like the end of a pair of headphones? If this is the case, then you want the speaker plug.

Just tried connecting it to every possible plug and still none are working and my hair almost got sucked into the fan.

Wow, um.. do headphones work? And.. were you able to try out another set of speakers?
And be careful!

Hmm, my computer has a problem like this. Sound suddenly just stopped working on speakers a while back, i'm on a 98 too. Speakers still aren't working, I even tried different ones, but when I plug in earphones those work. Perhaps it's a problem with the speaker output itself?
Joli2006-02-10 05:28:03
Well that sucks..
Unknown2006-02-10 05:45:43
That's weird.. I could recommend.. updating your drivers or doing a rollback then a re-update to see if that'll configure things, but.. it's not motherboard hardware failure (Assuming you're using onboard sound), you said there's no "muted" system issues..
You could check out the BIOS (Well, CMOS) when you restart (You know how it says hit.. F1 or whatever when your computer it booting up?) and check if you can do anything with your on-board sound there.
But really, we've ran through almost everything except speaker failure, and I doubt it's that.
I can refer you to this groovy chart I found while searching on goorgle to see if I omitted anything, but I think we've touched most of that. I ignored everything that considered motherboard sound failure.

It's fixed! Huzzah! And I'm not telling you what was wrong with it because I know I'll get called a retard.

Maybe you have gremlins
