So, as I'm sure many of you have noticed Magnagora is slowly deteriorating in population, with not many new novices joining, people going inactive, quitting the city, etc...at almost all hours of the day I can CWHO and am able to see everyone without even having to type MORE and it's kind of depressing. I have heard various people talk about why and so far I've heard things like too much stability, unfriendly environment, and just boredom in general.
I want to know what you guys think I, or others who think there is a problem, can do to change how things are now without totally altering Magnagora's RP. At the current rate its really looking down hill. Please offer suggestions!
Also, if you don't have something constructive to add please don't post, thanks.

I'm not used to ever having to MORE my cwho list in Lusternia.
Magnagora, I think, is starting to suffer the same problem as other 'evil' orgs; not many people play them, and everyone else hates them. They either dominate or get stomped, not much in between. You seem to be sliding from the former to the latter.

You're from Serenwilde, shouldn't you always have to type MORE?
Xavius2006-02-15 22:45:33
He must have one of those auto-more deals. Serenwilde's so far ahead in terms of population it's not funny.
Sylphas2006-02-15 22:47:53
I haven't been around much in a few months, and when I am, it's at like 3am.
Kaervas2006-02-15 22:48:24
But seriously I've noticed the lack of people around lately, hell I'm even starting to get quite bored myself, though that's improved with Fain becoming active again. It's like suddenly half the city has vanished on us
Veonira2006-02-15 22:48:48
I've definitely noticed it. Especially because the only change I get to log on really is in the middle of the day (EST) and at times there will be one other person on in the Guild and only 8 or so people on in the city.
I've been trying to come up with ideas for the Geos at least to keep novices and encourage more to join, however my efforts aren't full-fledged yet due to my actual obligations to school and my job. I've definitely noticed that at least in the guild, things are much less exciting than when Lusty was new.
And I think while people could say, "Well good, it's Magnagora's turn to feel that way," it's also sad because it does tend to happen to the evil orgs in games. And Mag doesn't even have to be evil necessarily, it's just not the "Light."

I found a very disturbing thing. Celest just pushed out Serenwilde for first place in cultural activity. Glom and Magnagora remain far behind, but we've overtaken Magnagora ourselves.

For me, it was just the stress of the whole thing.
Log on, find out that someone had opened the Gorgogs -again-, and raised Marylinth -again-. Work 8-10 hours to have a -chance- at solving one or two of those quests, my job as a Undersecretary meant that I have to deal with novices when no one else will. (Which was often when I was active, when Veonira wasn't around.) Then log off, feeling weary or more weary and drained than I was to begin with.
(EDITED FOR CLARIFICATION: I -despise- helping novices. I'm not very good at it, and it's just bothersome. Why am I an Undersecretary, then? Because for a while, very few /seemed/ to be helping novices in the Geomancers guild. And whilst I despise helping novices, novices are extremely important to the growth/whatever in the guild/city.)
I -could- stop the certain someone from opening the Gorgog rift, as long as I woke up at 2-6 AM my time, and did my best to screw up the quest. (Which worked beautifully, and kept the rift closed. While the quest can be done in 20 mins, if any part of the gorgog quest is slain, that stalls you 3-4 hours.) And I had little to no backup from mainstream Magnagora, barring Rahvin and the occasional other helper.
In short, I suppose, I'm saying Magnagora seemed all work and no play to me. RP was scarce, and while I know I'm not the best at that, the general... environment of Magnagora seems to reward the quiet types that don't make a fuss. And RP'ing in public is generally a fuss.
And so, the alt I made, originally for relaxation and a chance to get away from the 'work' Tzara gives me, became my main lightning-fast. The organization I'm in there has a lot of RP, and while I haven't got my character into a leadership position there, (and likely will do all I can to avoid a job like Undersecretary), it is a lot more laid-back and lax. More like a game, than like a job.
My suggestions for improvement? I'm not sure. I'm of the mind that Magnagora just didn't 'fit' what I was looking for in an organization. Because those that want to have things to do constantly, can likely find stuff to do there once they are of the right level. Another thing that may need improvement, is some of those in Mag need to become more involved with their city and guild things, because... as is, it -seems- that there's only a few people doing the high-profile things, with very few doing the low-profile, equally important things. (Gorgog rift, Marylinth/Ladantine/Ship of the Dead, etc.)
There's my two cents, and my view on the thing, however skewed it may be. Yarr.

Well, I've noticed that the Serenwilde has increased in numbers greatly, and that Magnagora and Glomdoring has gone down... Huh. Well, I guess everyone out there likes to be the good guy...

Celest (especially the Aquas ) has been pretty consistantly pwning in topguilds, which is pretty nice.
Personally, I think that Magnagora is going down hill because for the longest time, the well known fighters were doing most of the work, causing the new players to feel somewhat useless, and lose interest in the game. That worked fine for a while, but now that the people who were carrying the city for a long time are getting bored too, what do you have left? I don't think its really a matter of altering the rp of Magnagora, it looks to me like Magnagora is heading towards the down side of a natural cycle that is compounded by its depending on too few for too much.
The best plan for all of you who are capable of doing things is to pack your bags and come to Celest. Its much shinier.

Everytime I log on I'm usually the only Geomancer around..
Even I'm starting to feel the pull of whatever it is. The only reason I log on anymore is to be around Ixchilgal.
Magnagora just seems unfriendly. They don't talk on CT very often and usually when someone does they don't get a response or someone cows them down. Yes, as much as Magnagora will hate it.. they need to be nice to the people they have and not be huge douches and talk and make each other feel motivated.

Eh, every time i've been in Mag, it's always like, everyone does what they want, and no one ever works in teams unless they're forced to, i mean, the rift is opened, and people sit around and go bash, or quest, and dont do anything about it, and if someone does, no one basically helps.

That was my first thought to. I don't specifically know Magnagora, but in general, similar orgs (you're not evil, but to newbies, you can come off that way really easily) tend to look down on their novices and lord it over them. That's perfectly valid RP, but very few are hardcore RPers, or even want to play that way if they are. It can be hard to break through to where you feel like you're not crap. It works in real life, but here, no one is born into Magnagora and anyone can leave if they want.
I'd suggest working to be more friendly and cheerful. You don't have to be super happy snuggly, but if everyone is cold and distant, you're not going to get many novices.
On the flip side of that, I'd LOVE to see Serenwilde turn into something that everyone doesn't seem to want to join. Sylphas couldn't really care less about anything that's not Seren. He hates Celest more than Glomdoring, for various reasons (not that he's cool with them either), and is in general, for lack of a better analogy, green/black instead of the prevailing green/white (Magic reference!).
It seems that Lusternia is slowing sinking into stereotypes and the typical ruts that it managed to avoid this long. I really, really don't want this to go down the same road Achaea did.

Yeah, I highly recomment NOT changing rp, with the exception of being a little nicer to novices like what has been mentioned. I think that was a lot of Celest's problem for a while, that is forum folk dictating what Celest's rp 'should' be, and some people took the suggestions IC which just lead to a lot of internal clashing.
Edit: I was constructive twice! I'm so proud...

Ill come play my alt for a bit if thats helpful (Im bored right now in Celest so makes no difference to me)
Though Ill comment as a novice in Magnagora (I still am) the inactivity is a big turn off because theres no one around to help you when you need it. Or everyone else is just too busy to help because everything that was once held together by a bunch of people is now held together from a few. Its kinda sad to see Magnagora as such because you guys have always been interesting.

I've been tempted to make an alt but the idea of starting over doesn't appeal to me much.

Thats understandable.

Well one problem we've had lately is being too tolerant on idiots. People like Finn, Niyu, and Liconius shouldn't have lasted one IG day with their attitudes. We need to be stricter towards idiots and snugglebunnies, as that was a big part of Celest's problem.
