After a few months of succesful raiding I've reached all my goals within WoW (specially since after MC and ZG what's left now is hardcore raiding and endless hours of grinding to be able to see BWL in a far future) and I probably will be looking for a new game.
I am in the beta for D&D Stormreach, and so far it isn't exactly what I like, but it seems to get better with the levels, so still haven't decided to forget about it.
What about Guildwars? Is it PvP oriented or can I have fun without killing other players? How good is the end-game content? Anybody has any real screenshots of the interface and game play? Is it worth paying the 40€ I will be asked for it?
Help!

The guild wars endgame content is the PVP. The Roleplay part is to unlock skills to build PVP Characters.

owwww
A big no no then. If I want PvP I'll go back to Lusternia.
Will have to try to find the nice side to D&D then.
Or wait for WoW expansion
PS: Thanks for telling though

Hold out for a month or two, hopefully by then the guys making HoMM5 will have fixed up most of the major bad points of it. Then there is also the morrowind sequel - Oblivion which should be awesome. If you are looking for a quick PvM fix, do what I am doing and digging out an old copy of Diablo II for some skullbashing.

I will be playing WoW for a month or two until we have everything in farm status and it's no fun anymore, so I can wait
Oblivion I dislike the graphic style of Morrowind, so probably won't be much interested in.
I just need somewhere to do big PvE dungeons with people. I like the challenge and the strategy. I would be happy with WoW if it wasn't that the next dungeon will require months and months of farming for the right equipment on the same exact places, on bosses that were theoretically very difficult but drop at the first try with a minimally coordinated team. HoMM5 I haven't heard about, but will check

Oblivion isn't an MMO though, not that I'm trying to keep you from playing it...

That is so not true There are so many fun endgame dungeons for PvE. As my roommate just commented, 80% of Guildwars is endgame, the PvP and PvE. You'll reach max level about a week after starting the game, as leveling isn't what the game is about. If you like just getting more and more powerful, then Guildwars isn't for you - the PvE is designed to be challenging all the time, not just until you get stronger.
I have never played PvP in Guildwars, and I love the game, especially the endgame. I have no idea what Alyssandra is talking about.
The one thing that turns most people off to Guildwars though is that, because it's designed to be challenging, you cannot do anything alone. You NEED to find groups for missions and the endgame PvE dungeons, and the groups need to not be full of idiots. If you can find a guild to join, it can be a lot of fun. If you play entirely in pick up groups, you'll not enjoy it in the slightest.
Guildwars is cheap - only $40 or so, and if you don't like it, you can always ebay it No monthly fee == GOOD.
EDIT: Oh, GW isn't a MMORPG though, if that's what you're looking for. It's in the same genre as Diablo 2.

I like Guildwars and its theme. Getting involved in a Guild and playing competitive is the main purpose of the game, but there are lots of things you can do.
And you probably spent much more money in WoW. 40€ for unlimited online play isn't that much (although episode 2, the expansion, is coming in April).

Honestly, the PvP in GW is meaningless and boring. It looks like it'll be more interesting in Factions (episode 2) though. I would never play for anything but the PvE in Prophecies (episode 1).
Manjanaia2006-02-14 21:39:07
Guildwars is good but you'd find it very limited having played World of Warcraft.

I don't know where you got that impression; actually, the PvP is incredibly complex but it requires a lot of teamwork to pull off successfully.

What I meant was, it's just like arena duels. There is nothing more complex than that. You fight, one side wins, and that's it. It's like playing a counterstrike match. I mean, if people are into that, then it's good, but there's no persistant nature or progression to the conflict, which makes it boring to me. You're not fighting over anything, you're just fighting for the sake of it.
Don't get me wrong, I love the combat system, I just wish it was more than just a combat system.

Well, yeah. Maintaining a persistent world would be ridiculous to do on such a large scale with so many players.
But the actual fighting seems interesting and incredibly complex/stragetic if you get into a good guild.

They're doing something cool-looking in the expansion with it though, where you can fight for control of cities/outposts for your alliance (or faction?) and if you have control, you get some special benefits, like access to special dungeons and such.

Umm... the Fissure of Woe and Underworld are already like that.
EDIT: As in, the team that holds the Hall of Heroes for 5 rounds gets the Favor of the Gods for their region (America/Europe/Korea). You can only get into the Fissure/UW if you have the Favor.

On an absurdly large and insignificant scale, yes. I mean more direct control over smaller areas, and it sounds like the contests for control aren't just pure PvP.

The main turn-off for such things here is the price.
WoW sells at $99 in local currency. A month's playing time is $40.
However, we still have equivalent wages ($15USD per hour ~ $15NZD per hour, to make a random example up), so it just becomes a ripoff.

Wow. Isn't it like, $50 + $15 or so a month in the US?
