The newbie area may be boring, but it's one of the best places to make money in the whole game I'd say. If you're bored, you could try doing the various quests there until level 21 when you're kicked out automatically. Alternatively, you could explore the rest of the land and see if you can take on other things. Killing rats or weevils in your home city/commune can make you some money as well, though not as much as in Newton.

What about pilgrims? I dont really get what i'm supposed to do with them, but I hear you can earn experience from it.

Collect them from around the roads of the basin, and take them to Avechna's peak for gold and experience... It'll also teach you your way around a bit.

There's the Toronada Tadal Flats. Some of the creatures can be tricky cause they can give you afflictions, not just damage (crabs can break your leg, jellyfish can paralyze you, seagulls deafen, etc) so it adds a bit of fun to the hunting, just make sure you've got a mending vial and know how to shield between hits if you need to to heal up. There's a nice honors quest there too, I know. I personally haven't been able to solve it yet, but I'm quest-impaired. *G*
And ratting/weeveling is always good.
