Riding

Well, the mention of riding in the artifact thread sort of reminded me that we have a Riding skillset in Lusternia, and I started thinking about it again (and felt bad that I had not said anything about it in an envoy report).

I'm wondering about a couple of things. First:

QUOTE(AB RIDING JOUSTING)

Syntax: JOUST
Similar to ram. You can attempt to joust a mounted opponent. If successful, you will knock him off
his steed and viciously skewer him. You must be wielding a spear, trident or lance in order to
joust. Be warned, however, that depending on your skill in riding and the level of your mount versus
your opponent's skill in riding and level of his mount, there is a chance that you will be the one
knocked off your steed and potentially skewered (for if your opponent has the jousting skill and is
wielding the correct weapon, he will automatically lower it and attempt to skewer you).

Do we even have those weapons in Lusternia? They aren't given in HELP WEAPONS, and I've never seen one.

Second, what if there was a high-level riding skill that made riding in combat at least potentially viable:
QUOTE(Proposed AB RIDING TACK)

Syntax: TACK
Requires: leather 1
Preparing a full set of riding equipment for your mount, you will be able to utilize it to return instantly to the saddle after you have been knocked prone in combat. The additional tack can unfortunately provide no benefit if you are knocked clear of your mount, such as if you are rammed or jousted.

So essentially, while you lose purchase on your steed if you are knocked over or your legs broken, providing you were not successfully rammed or jousted, you will instantly be back on your mount after you have stood again.

Does that sound reasonable?

Yes, we have them. Noku (Geomancer, old fellow) used to run around with one, and we all made jokes about his big ol' lance.

I approve. Even though I don't have (much) Riding. Yet.

Actually, if it's the next-to-Trans skill.
It sounds hot.

Myself and Penelope had a jousting tournament one time.
Even if you succeed in impaling the other person and knocking them off, they don't get affected by it.
No negatives to loosing or anything
This should be fixed!
We ended up trying to kick each other to death in the arena

I have my prized diamond-tipped darksteel lance. Hajamin and I once traded, eventually resulting in my death. sad.gif

Riding needs to be looked at, and if one or two people were willing, I'd get some people together to look at some suggestions.

There are the Wyvern Riders in the histories so maybe we will see some riding looked at when they come around? Can we get a wyvern as a mount yet? Not as a credi-pet but just as a mount?I assume not but am not sure either...

You can't get a crow as a mount either unless you become a Blacktalon, so I'm pretty sure you'll never get a Wyvern unless you're in that mage guild.

Edit: As far as I know, you can't get a crow period, even as a credit pet, unless you're in the Blacktalon.

I wrote up a whole thing on riding...

I might as well post it.

CODE

Scooping

Scooping should either work for more than just picking up items, such as forging, or laying traps or other activites normally not allowed, or a new skill be added which gives these abilities.

Fording

Change the command in fording to SWIM, so that if you are on the mount you will swim with it.  Also change the AB file to fit this change.  Fording should not intefer with the waterwalking enchanment if you put on the enchantment while mounted.

Vault               .

should be changed to a passive ability that just replaces the MOUNT command, to reduce balance time, I see no reason for both Mount AND vault.

Gallop

Should work with  the command to Sprint, just as Block works with command block while mounted or not mounted.

.
Mountjump

Change the command to LEAP

Blocking

Allow people with the block command to order an unmounted steed to block an exit other than the one they are. (not actually submitted)

Flying

Change the command to FLY

Jousting

Allow jousting to work against non mounted opponents as well, and use combat ability and shield usage to prevent the action.

Additional change...

Allow mounted players to enter trees, if the mount can follow into the tree, why can't the player be mounted?

Put something in the prompt to notify the player if they are mounted or not, and have some notice when being forced off the mount for all situations, not just when sleeping.

p.s. I like that tack idea, wish I had thought about it.

That's a really good idea! Currently riding is sucky because...

1) I'm not able to do many essential things during combat such as tumble while mounted

2) it's too easy to get knocked off

3) a lot of the skills in riding are not very useful

I hope that eventually it will get an overhaul or its own envoy report so it's not a complete copy of the riding skillset in Achaea, etc and has some originality
