Right now, there are three things that an Artisan can actually sell.
-Pipes
-Kegs
-Thrones
Pipes can also be made by artists. Kegs are low and can be made by lowbies, which sinks prices to negligible levels. Thrones are expensive and heavy on commodity need - after someone pays 200,000 for commodities for a throne, you can only charge so much on commission.
I have a few suggestions to make Artisan a more workable skillset.
Make lockwork allow us to make all kinds of locks. Why only be able to lock furniture?
Make us able to make doors. You can't tell me we can make cabinets with doors, but no actual doors. I'd suggest making this high-ish (Fabled 10%?).
Other than this, make furniture do things. Why on earth does someone do, IC, with a sconce?

Put a torch in it?
Anyways, I do need to speak to you at some point about designing a piece of furniture that's not on that list.

Is that what a sconce does? Isn't it some kind of cornered shelf, though?
Saran2006-03-17 02:03:48
*chuckles* I'm furnishing my ship, I just bought a throne, bookshelf and cabinet. Though I had already bought two chairs, a desk and a bed.
I had a chest and fighting ring but both went bye bye.
Anyway, I think like other skills it's designed to cater to a specific market.
This sounds right to me
Tailoring could be unneccesary for Warriors or non-influencers
Forging for anyone who isn't a Warrior
Jewelry for people who don't use enchantments or influence
Bookbinding for people who don't want to write
Artisans for people who don't have their own manse
Alchemists aren't needed by anyone who doesn't plan on doing much of anything.
Herbalists are the same but Alchemists need them aswell. (hardest work is in here)
Enchants are similar as well as Poisons.
My vague point is that while yes from a mechanics stand point some trade skills are not needed, People will eventually buy things, People seem to like having that un-neccesary jewelry to add that little extra to their description, They write books for their libraries, They buy enchantments/potions/herbs to make life easier, And they buy furniture for the boosts it give. It's been hell trying to find an Artisan to make my furniture for me, I like my bed (i was dragged home by derian last time Saran got drunk), My empty bookshelf with the handy desk right there for making alterations and perhaps writing new things, Love my throne and keg of course.
Hee babblefest Sorry!

The problem is that there is no actual benefit to Artisan products. Bookbinders have scrolls, and books can get you culture power. Clothing affects influencing and can have protections. Forging helps warriors bash. Enchanting just gives you general versatility, Jewelry affects influencing and carries Enchantments. Cooking can boost con, and can feed you. You can't really that Herbs and Alchemy have a problem selling, or being useful. Poisons is directly useful for many combatants. Artisan? Uh...we can make pipes, though you get it a lower skillrank in Arts. We can make kegs. Thrones boost charisma. And that's about it.

Well, my definition of sconce is that "ring" thing that hangs on a wall (usually seen in movies in old crypts and dungeons), and you stick a torch or candle in it to light your way.
You'd have to actually examine these sconces to see, but I don't see any reason why they'd be different.
Hazar2006-03-17 02:16:34
Ah, upon inspection, sconces seem to hold candles.
Which leads to the idea of...enchantable sconces and chandeliers! Artisan makes lighting fixture, enchanter puts charges in it, and when LIT, the chandelier/sconce provides a regen effect!

Shamarah2006-03-17 02:22:37
Isn't there furniture that gives endurance/willpower regen?
Cwin2006-03-17 02:24:38
That reminds me. I need to start looking into furniture. The ONLY thing to sit down on in my office is the throne and you can't sit comfortably there or write anything.
Oohh, can you sleep on a couch? If so I know exactly what I'm going to buy.
Meanwhile, my poor manse has NOTHING in it. A pity I'm always broke though.

Last I checked, you couldn't even sleep on a bed. Much less a couch.
(If you fall asleep due to exhaustion on a bed, you fall off.

You can't sleep on a couch. I tumble off my white fur divan whenever I try to do so.
I toss and turn a lot, apparently.

I've slept on plenty of couches, including broken ones backstage behind musicals with off-key singers. You're not trying.
And where is this furniture with regen?
Unknown2006-03-17 02:40:34
A rocking chair will regenerate willpower when you rock in it.
Racks mean weapons and armour stored inside don't decay.
Cabinets mean clothes stored inside don't decay.
Large tables enhances the value of herofetes which are conducted at it.
Drapes can cloak a room in night (not sure why this is good).
Tapestries can hide an exit in a room.
Chandeliers can reveal dreamweavers (again, not sure where this would be useful).
Thrones increase charisma by 2.
Bookcases allow personal libraries to be stocked.
Beds allow you to rest quicker.
Most of artisanry has a practical use. Its just not very useful outside the manse/guildhall.

Wait, are you for serious?
Does that mean it increases the stat boost or the duration?
Unknown2006-03-17 02:50:57
No, it means it costs the cook half as much to give one.
It also makes the food more filling if you eat at it.
There is nothing finer than sitting in a chair while eating at a fine banquet table. Indeed, food
will even be more nutritious. If you are lucky enough to have a chef serve you a hero fete while you
are sitting at one of these sumptuous table, the chef will only need serve you half of what he
normally would. (Note: The perfect banquet hall would have a large table and at least 5 chairs so
that a chef could get the maximum benefit of a hero fete. Everyone, including the chef, must be
sitting down on chairs though!)
Also see ARTISAN LARGETABLES.

Some kind of furniture bond that lets them teleport to it from any plane. (Like 10p teleport nexus to it IIRC.)
Unknown2006-03-17 06:45:30
You can place a golden seal on one piece of furniture. That item never decays, you can't change it, and you can teleport to it for 5 power from anywhere.
Daganev2006-03-17 06:47:13
can you move it? thats sounds pretty darn neat.
Unknown2006-03-17 06:52:33
It's furniture, which can't be moved except by deconstructing it.
Syntax: PRIZE
PRIZE RETURN
Power: 5 (any) (to return)
Sometimes you build a piece of furniture that is so beautiful and special to your heart that you
always wish to return to it. By claiming a piece of furniture as your prized possession, you will be
able to return to it, no matter what plane you are on. There are some limitations to this power. It
costs 10,000 gold to place your golden seal upon a piece of furniture to claim it as your prized
possession and you may only ever have one prized piece. Note that prized furniture does not decay.
