ANNOUNCE NEWS #545

Subj: Books and Library Updates
- The gold cost of creating new books has been greatly decreased.
- Books no longer have to be sealed for a bookbinder to copy them.
- Certain types of books pay out royalties to the authors as follows:
- Books and compendiums pay 5% royalties to the author.
- Manuals and codexes pay 10% royalties to the author.
- Tomes and omnibuses pay out 15% royalties to the author.
Penned by My hand on the 16th of Roarkian, in the year 142 CE.
I'm confused by the second one. Bookbinders -couldn't- copy sealed books to begin with. The point of sealing was to prevent copying, I figured...
EDIT: First and third changes are nice though.

Yay, this is great... though... the second is hopefully a typo
Shiri2006-03-20 02:36:58
Well if it is a typo it still seems counterproductive...
Unknown2006-03-20 02:40:32
Yay...wait...i don't give a rip, because I would rather have envoys....well I guess yay for those who like books more or something...

I was thinking "- Books no longer have to be UNsealed for a bookbinder to copy them."
Because they have/had to be unsealed for you to copy them, meaning another critique period and the like for a single copy

What else does sealing do?
Unknown2006-03-20 03:21:57
I hope only library books don't need to be unsealed. Because that would suck if -any- sealed book could be copied. It largely defeats the purpose of sealing in some cases, where you want people to come to you to buy the book personally.

What we originally discussed was that any book that has been published would be copyable by bookbinders. I suspect that is what was implemented, but last minute changes sometimes happen because they're much easier to code.

I took a look at the price of a scroll, and it has indeed gone down dramatically. It's 1/5 of what it was, thank you!
Daganev2006-03-20 07:35:38
someone willing to post the new prices?

Not for me it's not. Journals et al are cheaper, scrolls are the same.
Everiine2006-03-20 07:52:45
I'm pretty sure about it, but I'll check again. I recalled the scroll being 5000 to make, and now it's 1000. I'll see what the others are like.

Scrolls were never 5000 to make. I'm pretty sure of that.
Shyshaeia2006-03-20 15:13:24
Er, it always costed 1000 gold to make a scroll, 5k for journal, 10k for book and 20k for manual and 25k for tome...something like that. Dont know what the new prices are, cause I have not had a chance to check yet.
Everiine2006-03-20 17:38:15
I must have my numbers wrong then.
Sylphas2006-03-20 18:01:06
Only tiny problem with this is that the bigger books don't always mean it's a bigger or better work, especially without any sort of page limit. It just means you spent more to get it.
I don't think it will really matter, but it is kind of annoying if your one page work will bring you more money if you put it into a tome instead of a book.

Daganev2006-03-20 18:05:16
lets pretend that the price to check out a book is 100 gold... that means you will be getting 10 gold everytime a person checks out the book.. that means someone will have to check out your book 100 times before you even make up the money for a scroll... Putting something in a tome that could be in a scroll just for a cutback has got to be the biggest waste of gold ever. The only reason I can see somebody doing this is if they wanted to be able to record how popular thier book is.
Verithrax2006-03-20 18:51:46
Are you sure we get royalties from checkin/checkout? I thought that's just for copying.
Ialie2006-03-20 19:00:41
yeah you do. We checked. It goes into your bank account.
Unknown2006-03-20 22:25:12
What if you don't have a bank account? Does it go into your inventory?
