Subj: Tracking the Lag Monster
As some of you may have noticed, there has been some small bursts of lag
here and there. We've isolated the problem to a firewall issue which we
are working on.

The lag was starting to really bug me.

Anything to stop idiots from talking about 'soul aeon'.

I always preferred lag demons myself
And don't tell me its OOC. Even a fantasy world can have mythological creatures.

Not if they're anthropomorphizations of something completely outside the game world.

Except, they're not. Aeon is an in-game effect. Choke is an in-game effect. Sap is an in-game effect. They are all different in their source and cause of effect, but they all cause a dragging and sluggishness.
Aeon isn't sap and Sap isn't Choke, but they are relateable. It is perfectly logical that a slang word would develop to describe that similarity.
And the proof that its plausible is that it happened in our world. Lag is a slang term to describe dragging and slugishness, and it is not just limited to the internet (jet lag).
So yeah, its fine.
---------------------
actually, lag isn't even realy slang. Its middle english meaning "last", and is a real word in the english language.
So, its as much an creation of purely OOC influence as the word jump.

What you fail to get is, our characters aren't feeling any sluggishness. It's an OOC influence. It's like referring to the fact that you're OOCly drunk and making typos; any mention of the word 'soul' (Which, by the way, doesn't exist in Lusternia) is a break of immersion because you're referring to the player, the player's computer, or any and all devices used to play the game, which are outside the game world.

er..how can you say that the characters aren't feeling it? It is very plausible that they are feeling a drag on their aether strands. If our characters are sensative enough to them to actually manipulate them, and detect who is manipulating them around us.. and when someone pulling on our aetherstrand can actually yank us across a the Basin, I'd say that they definitely have the power to 'tighten' and slow us down.
Edit: Lets not forget that the game crashing even has an IC basis. And time can be broken. And a variety of other things. And also, souls DO exist in game. Watch someone when they enter, it says that their soul descends to fill their body. So.. if the world can implode from time to time and rip our souls out of our bodies.. OH, and, when the weave changes, it even SAYS that the world slows around us. So there's a precedent for our character's feeling the sluggishness caused by various strands being tweaked and pulled.
Verithrax2006-08-01 02:14:01
Er, do you actually have something that demonstrates that? 'Aether' isn't just a fancy way of talking about the game interface and pretending you're not breaking IC.

Pay attention the messages of Aethersight, for example. You detect them being pulled. Also, when you planar summon someone, you reach out and grab the strands and pull on them. Same with teleport.
Verithrax2006-08-01 02:18:06
You still haven't related Aether to lag, or to the game interface, or explained how it relates to things entirely outside the game world that are only part of the way we interact with it.

Yes I did. It was in my edit.
When the weave changes and the Fates are screwing with the Aether, the message explicitly states that the world slows down around us.
Hence, when the aether is screwed with on a large scale, it can cause us to feel the world become sluggish.
Lag is a word in the english language. It means to be sluggish or drag. If I can't use lag to describe being sluggish or dragging, then you can't use sewing to describe making clothing, because it doesn't have an IC basis either, except that its a word in english.
Verithrax2006-08-01 02:23:53
Er, I think that's just a notification of new code being put into the system. It's not IC. Unless someone in the administration wants to say it is? You're not getting it, either. I'm not opposing the usage of the word lag, I'm opposing talking about lag ICly. Is our ANSI colour scheme IC now?
Unknown2006-08-01 02:29:46
Lag often has in-game consequences. If you lag in the middle of bashing, your character could very well die as a result of it. That's IC.

It is IC. I'm not talking about the new message Roark put in. I'm talking about the one that's allllways been there, that fires when the the all the logs reset and everything. It says that you feel the world slow down around you, as the Fates tidy up the aether. It is a completely IC message. How in the hell do you think its OOC? OOC would be "There's about to be some lag while the game timers reset." The actual message is completely IC.
And, it is completely IC to talk about lag if you are referring to that same slowing of the world. If we can feel the world become sluggish when the aether is being massively effected, then there is nothing wrong with referring to it as lag. Saying "I feel sluggish" and "I am lagging" are identical in terms of the english language. It only has an OOC conotation because its been adopted by internet culture. It is a synonym of feeling sluggish, and so it is completely IC to use it as such.

You're not even arguing against my position. I'm saying using the term 'soul aeon' is just as bad as saying 'I'm lagging'. Talking about lag is a break of immersion, and until the administration clarifies the rules and says it's okay, I'm saying it's not.

The lag itself is breaking immersion. You're in the middle of an intense scene and... the game stops for 15 seconds. Anyway, I don't think you should scream it over every aether, but explaining something as occuring as a result of 'soul aeon' or something like that is fine.
