Ah yes, I'm so glad I'm studying abroad to Japan next year!

'Tis Japan. I am not surprised.

Good way to spread the word about sexually transmitted diseases though. Makes it so that the conversation is open and such.

I can see it now, they come for the giant genital, and stay for the fun facts!

American society is too Puritan about human sexuality. If you'd be more open and honest about it then I suspect all the issues of teenage pregnancy, STDs, etc would not be such the huge issue it has become. Hell, they don't even teach about Homosexuality in the Sexual Education classes you have to go to every year from 6th grade up. I got to high school, saw two guys kissing and I was like "holy cow". I could just be a product of growing up in the south, but still...there needs to be less conservativeness and more openness about such information. Don't hide your children from the natural parts of life. I applaud any country that takes a more proactive stance to educate the masses instead of hiding it from your citizens as a dirty and filthy natural urge.

Good point pen. Did you hear that a few of the crazy right wing nut jobs were trying to remove sexual education from schools, they were arguing that teaching kids about stds, pregnancy and condoms was just encouraging them to go out and be promiscuous. A fair number of politicians and all the crazy priests over here are against it all as well, kinda stupid really. Heh a lot of them even want people to stop using or even ban the sales of condoms and like that’s really going to help the fact that we already have one of the highest teenage birth rate in Europe

Penelope is 100% right.
And that's hilarious, especially the ride-able one xD

Right on the money. One thing I object to is that a state has to choose between teaching abstinance or safe sex - they cannot teach both. Thus, all of the sex ed. classes here in Arizona consist of "Don't have sex until you're married! Don't have sex until you're married! Don't have sex until you're married!". They still teach about STDs and such, but they aren't allowed to even mention condoms or other devices. Also, I have to endure stupid state-sponsored anti-sex commercials on TV - the anti-abortion ads are enough, thanks. Anyone who has their opinion changed by ten seconds of propoganda shouldn't be having kids anyway.

See? It's this attitude that you cannot teach abstinance and safe sex at the same time that pisses me off. YES YOU CAN. Abstinance is the number one safest form of sex((yeah yeah, I know oxymorong and what not, but it's true)). No sex is the safest sex. I consider myself VERY open minded about a lot of things in the world and the very sexual nature of the human being is one of them. Humans are sexual creatures it's impossible to say otherwise and damn near impossible to resist the natural hormonal urges 99.9999% of the population feel. What helps is education and awareness. If you are not educated and are not aware that "hey...there are risks" you're screwed(no pun intended...I SWEAR!! ).

I guess I'm lucky. Where I go to school, we get taught SAFE SEX and HOMOSEXUALITY HAPPENS.
We have a pretty active GSA, so two kids come speak at every freshman health class.
As Penelope said, Abstinance is the safest sex. They say that. They also say "We know your not gunna listen, so heres how to be safer if you do have sex."

I've never heard of abstinence actually being taught. It just doesn't happen over here.
Hazar2006-04-15 01:52:06
The sex education at my schools is sickening. It's pretty much not there. Every once in a while they scream ABSTINENCE, then they shut up like they're embarassed.
Thank god for Unitarians. Their sex-ed courses have triple the population of their youth group.

It would be pretty weird if they did.
"First children, you don't want to go up to a guy and him, also you should not a girl's but most importantly don't all night long with a you paid for 10 minutes earlier down in the district of the city, that is the worst! There, now you know what this is not doing, so please don't do it."
Shiri2006-04-15 07:27:08
I dunno, Penelope seems to imply that it's done over there so that people can actually object to it being done...or something.
Penelope2006-04-15 07:35:21
Well, the problem with sexual education in the States is it's inconsistent school to school. Each school district, city, county, state, etc has their own rules and regulations governing what can and cannot be taught. State of Georgia is straight up Abstinence. Don't do it. Don't think about it. Don't even touch yourself in your nether bits and think about it. Georgia tends to be a very conservative State when it comes to such topics of education. Not to mention the crazy laws in Georgia about sex. Did you know it's illegal to use anything other than missionary in Georgia?

What a bizarre thing to teach. What kind of age do they -stop- telling people that at?

Marriage, at which point, society just hopes that they're both virgins and ready for kids.
I suffered through a system like that in the short time I lived in Texas. The schools here in Omaha (where I was raised, and where I promptly returned) actually do teach a mix of abstinence and prevention. To see the alternative was amusing at best.
