Dissecting a character.

So, I was bored last night and got to thinking about Verithrax as a character. Verithrax is interesting as an amalgam of personalities that changed radically over the years. And since I like making this kind of post (Because people give interesting replies) I asked myself which other fictional characters Verithrax's several facets resemble.

The early Verithrax is a nice, helping guy. He just wanted to help the guild. He was a teacher, scholar, general do-gooder. A lot like classic mages like Gandalf.

The early Druid Verithrax is Radagast the Brown - Friend of the birds and bees. Boring as hell.

Then Verithrax the pacifist comes around. He's a lot like Gandalf, but more political, more argumentative. He tends to argue by pushing people's buttons rather than constructing logical arguments; he doesn't argue, he gives speeches.

As a tailor, Verithrax is like Zaphod Beeblebrox - FLamboyant, damn annoying, and arrogant as hell. This is the Verithrax most of you know and 'love'. Very very greedy.

Inside the Walkers, of course, Verithrax is kind of like Lord Vetinari. Political, curt, kind of creepy. Verithrax's office has a ceiling of glass, steel and gold because the tailor in Veri likes to flaunt wealth. It has a wooden floor because the politician in him likes to tune his floorboards. Verithrax has reached the point where he doesn't tell people working for him he wants them in his office; he politely informs them they have an appointment with him.

And then there's the Veri which only two people in the game know, and one of them is inactive. He's an awfully nice guy, is absolutely sweet, and isn't above using illusions to seduce someone.

And by the way, I wrote this for my own amusement and to see if I can prompt some interesting responses, particularly from newer players. If you don't care or aren't interested, don't read and don't post. smile.gif

So do you want retort about Verithrax, or us to post about our chars in the same manner?

If you're dissecting characters, remember this.

Don't eat the green wobbly bit.

YAY TALKING!!

Simimi started off as a pascifist healer. Slowly she was taught that there is nothing existant in the basin outside of Faith. Anything unrelated to Faith does not impact/matter to her personal being.

She did not leave the walls of Celest until after she was 30. Slowly her eyes began to be opened by people outside of the walls of Celest. Soon there-after she met Karrah Rakona, who taught her that there is more to life than Faith, and that, despite how much she wants it to be true, Faith is not an absolute modifier in the world.

A Child of Logic, she feels proper math can solve or explain anything, and on the priciple that to die for her Faith was the proper way to die with dignity, she decided to drop healing and take up Tarot, with the will to become a defender of Faith.

28 years later, she sees herself as a Keeper of The Faith, inside her walls, and consideres all citisens of Cleest o eb her "Children" and feels it is her divine charge to look over them, as was bestowed upon her by Lord Lacostian.

The "early" Yrael was utterly censor.gif and had illusions, which was great fun. I made a royal dick of myself. Geomantic antics.

The less-early Yrael was a royal dick and a Nihilist. I had a field day once I discovered I could rob people with dominate. I also discovered that Serenwilde and Celest and some Magnagoran stores of people I didn't like had no eye sigils.
>_>

The modern Yrael is an utter dick, but loved by all. ALL. All your evidence and logic might point to the contrary, but I am right. RIGHT.

I probably could have shortened this post to "Yrael always was, and always will be, an utter dick". Oh, well. At least I'm yet to have a discussion over a clan channel about crusty sores and explosive excrement, thank you Iblis.
Ialie2006-04-22 01:25:33
Ialie. Some has said she is bi polar, I don't know. She just is. She is Ialie. She is her own self and so complex to me I can't describe.
Daxera2006-04-22 03:08:43
Daxera, to me, isn't so old, so I don't have so much for this...

She started off quiet, logical, lacking many emotions. A girlish Data, if you will. She was just as curious, too.

She's kinda gone for the opposite since, minus the use of logic. She wants to put life into the Basin, especially Celest and the Aquamancers. She tries to help everyone with their emotional baggage. Many of her interests and actions stem from wanting to be closer to people, to know more secrets of organizations, etc. perhaps just for personal gratification. She would NEVER admit this, though. Generally she'll sacrifice being able to get farther so as to remain discreet with her intentions.

She greatly supports peace, and is just as greatly dissapointed in any claims people have made to helping further it. The organizations do nothing; individuals, completely by themselves, are who make the bonds.

Lastly, she is very open-minded about her views, but very black-and white on what she likes and dislikes (I swear it makes sense). Daxera generally puts people into the "Idiots" column or the "Fine So Far" column.

For a sampling:
People who fully support any commune/city are idiots. People who fight against people just because their cities/communes are enemies are idiots. People who are power hungry are idiots. Verithrax is an idiot. That's completely IC, though.

As for her current "character"...it's a mix. Like the entire crew from Star Trek NG. Minus Dr. Crusher. She's a flake.
Verithrax2006-04-22 03:25:17
Just curious, why does Daxera think Verithrax is an idiot? dry.gif I don't even remember them talking...

Which is okay. I can work through intermediates. Muaha.
Daxera2006-04-22 03:36:49
Yeah, they haven't talked much if at all. Really, it's basically the conceited attitude. And, while the Walkers seems to be a collaboration in part, she believes it being exclusive while for everyone's good perfectly describes Verithrax. But if only certain people can join/interact where's the learning going to start?

Again, she has black and white views on what she likes and dislikes. You're going to have a to do something very humbling and good for the Basin to get her to like you. So, that's not really Veri's fault.

Er...and you smell.
Verithrax2006-04-22 03:42:17
Thing is, Verithrax doesn't do stuff, strictly speaking. He likes pulling strings and working through intermediates. He coordinates, not acts. You'll probably see Invid, Tzekelkan and Thillieir furthering the cause a lot more than Verithrax.

And it's not really exclusive. Anyone willing can join.

Also, I don't smell.

Kahazul has developed a lot since I created him, and it's been a very gradual process. When he was a Geomancer he was much more tame and scholarly, and far warier in his approach to the taint. He viewed it as a powerful tool, but one that could quickly subvert the user were they careless. He viewed those obsessed with it with disdain. His main focus was on his Trill ancestry, though he was never a member of the 'OMG HALIFACKS NOW' club.

His move to the Nihilists was mostly a scholarly one, to learn more about the taint, and for awhile he held steady as a follower of Baalphegar, though he posed as a follower of Nifilhema - this was back before the Cult of Baalphegar was transformed into the Nihilist Supersecret Kids Club™, and could still be depended upon for a bit of badassness.

After that he slowly turned towards Gorgulu as Nil made him go taintshit loco and has ended up as the sort of creature he once hated - single-minded, power hungry, and totally ****ed up.

He still has rare moments of lucidity, when his old thought patterns wrest themselves free of the madness, but they are few and far between.

I've always wondered what'd happen if I were to breed myself and Iblis, instead of having another lovechild with Gaetele (which is done by leaving my window open at night, and a crying child can be found on my piles of dirty clothes on the floor in the morning).

Now I know. Guido would. Come to daddy, Guido.

But you're so cold, daddy.

It's like being hugged by a blanket of liquid hopelessness.
Yrael2006-04-22 04:51:31
I.. I tried, but I can't come up with anything to top it.

I can't stop laughing.
Shaeden2006-04-22 06:07:46
About the Dax-Verithrax thing, Shaeden' could not have helped with that... *cough*
Hmm, dissecting Shaeden....

Started out as a Druid Trill, met Daxera and realized I was a Merian.
Was kinda a wuss. Afraid, and shy.

Became a Hartstone undersec, but slowly became upset with Serenwilde, and their major hypocracy. Closet rebel and admirer of Verithrax, Shaeden lay low. After a discussion with Gregori where he said cutting down trees and killing deer was okay, Shaeden read a Celestine's guide to the Supernals and was converted.

Quickly rose to the rank of Secretary and High Priest in the Celestines. Like Celest's open religion policy, and became an avid Light advocate. Also hooked up with Collvan and the Legacy of the Pilgrim people, which is where Shae made his first friends ('course now he's starting to find them distant)

Shaeden rises up the Priesthood ranks, and becomes more in touch with the Light, which has had an anti Elder god feeling I can't figure out why or how it snuck in...

Now: Shaeden is a faithful, if uneducated priest in the Celestines. He tries his best to serve the Light and as such became Admin. He wants to be GM but loves Ayita to much to contest her, plus IC and OOCly I think she does a good job. He also wants everyone to follow the Light, but believes they should do so out of choice. He loves his family dearly, being the first people he really let himself get close with. He's now a little depressed at how many people are leaving the Light and his inability to follow Methrenton as well as he would wish. It should shake off soon... Oh, and Reiha leaving the city hit him very hard, as she was his first useful/successful convert. Anisu's leaving also hurt him pretty badly.

I have closet admirers? Whoa. unsure.gif

QUIET, RICKMAN.

YOUR SPEAKING PRIVILEDGES HAVE BEEN REVOKED! HUNGRY WOLVERINES, DEVOUR HIS FINGERS!

You know you love the king of deadpan cynicism, you big fancy, you.
Yrael2006-04-22 07:46:40
You are not deadpan.

You are not cynical.

You are excessively greasy, and I think eating all that week old easter-chocolate was a bad idea.
