Has anyone else noticed how all the Divine forum members have exactly 8,388,607 posts? as in.. all of them? without fail? Why is this, and what's so special about the number 8,388,607, aside from the fact that there is no way anybody will actually be able to make that many posts in 10 lifetimes?
And I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum area, I just didn't know where else to put it and 8,388,607 has been bugging me for quite some time now.

I'm sure Shiri could do it. He's a forumbot, y'know.
Unknown2006-05-13 00:47:48
It would've been better to have 8,675,309 posts

If you flip the numbers in the x-axis and rotate it 180 degrees and then reflect it in a mirror, it reveals a secret code.
Daganev2006-05-13 01:10:15
Obviously 838-8607 is Estarras phone number.

DUUDDDEE! DO I get a prize if I do!!?!?! HUH?!? HUH?!

Yeah.
Don't rush me though.

Except "8" isn't a California area code. *snicker*
Daganev2006-05-13 01:56:04
Um richter... 838 8607 would be within the area code... as 8607 isn't enough digits to be a phone number
The area code would be 415 if anyone wants to try.. or 510.
hmmm. its also the phonenumber of the State of Hawaii's airport transportation administration's fax number.... maybe the gods are all faxed to hawaii when they retire.

Simple.
It's the maximum number that can be stored in the variable type that is used to store the postcount.

Whacky! Its (8192 * 1024) - 1, or (2^23) - 1. Its either someone's idea of a joke, or there's a language out there which uses 24 bit signed numbers.
(or 32 bit signed numbers with 8 bits as 'flags'..)
Drathys2006-05-13 03:05:10
I know it's odd, but it makes the most sense.
It is probably stored internally as an adapted version of a single precision float, but I can't be certain, having no real knowledge of how IPB works.

Heh, getting slightly off topic - php types are 'magic' and I hate them for that. Damnit php, if I wanted my int promoted to a float because I'm trying to store a big number in it then I'd tell you! Don't just promote it to a float (with all the issues that occur once that happens.)

What's also funny is that Shikari hasn't validated so he shows up on total members by post count. Someone actually beat Shiri there!
ferlas2006-05-13 11:43:39
They changed it to that after I think alger said something like I find it amusing that gods post and they are listed as inept.
Shamarah2006-05-13 12:35:24
Yeah, Drathys is probably right. That or it's just some random numbers that Estarra punched into her numpad.

I'm guessing the formula was: ammount of posts Shiri can make in a life time + 1
hrm accually i'll just reveal the secret. 8,388,607 is the maximum mediumint value in mySQL

Cool! I never used mediumint.

Funny you should mention that. On the original Apple Macintosh, it used a custom system of 24-bit addressing embedded into 32-bit integers, using the other 8 bits as flags to indicate the type of data being pointed to. The joys of abusing how things were originally intended.

I still like my answer best...so who tried calling that number?
