Incense

I have no idea what could possibly be done with this, or what skillset it could be in, but I thought I'd post it all the same.

Syntax:
INFUSE WOOD WITH
LIGHT
INCENSES

Various herbs could be infused into a wood comm, to make 2-3 incense sticks per wood of that herb. Once lit with a tinderbox, they would give off special effects, depending on the herb used. This effect would hang in the room for a minute or two (maybe the time could be extended by infusing more than once) and, if it was a positive effect, it would give it to all the lighter's allies while they were in the room, or, if negative, they would give the guy's enemies an affliction until tehy cured it by normal means.

When someone steps into a room with a lit incense in, they see:
A scent drfits on the air here.
in the room desc.
Anyone with a certain skill in Discernment would see what herb was used, and INCENSES would list the players current burning incence sticks, how long they have left, and where tehy are. Only one stick can be lit in a location at any one time.

Nice idea, or unnecessary complications?

What would the possible effects be? They would have to be quite small for something this easy, like 5% resistance or somesuch, and it seems that it would be a herbish kind of skill in a way, more then any other skill bar nature or hunting.

It would probably be midway in herbs or Alchemy, I s'pose. Maybe Gifted 50%? And make it 1 stick per comm.

It would probably be little thing for the positives. Maybe a 1-2pt stat boost, incresed chance of attacks missing, resistance, that kinda thing. There could also be one like monolith, or maybe an anti-weather blindness thing. The negatives could be mental afflictions: dizziness, narcolepsy, could even make you throw up and be hungry, or make you gag and stagger out of the room. Maybe there could be facemasks to reduce the effects!

Those are not minor. Especially if they only cost a single herb. How about just make them have a scent, and no effects? Then they'd be good.

I think this would be a great idea for rp, with rituals and such. If it would be this way and not have use for anything besides something that just shows up in a room description, I don't see why it would even have to be a high-up skill, or why you would need to have a skill to see it. Various kinds of incense could have different appearances and/or meanings, which would really add nice flavor to many situations

CIERA!!!!!
Tsuki2006-06-08 23:47:27
I agree with the idea of adding to RP quality. If you could only light one at a time, make sure you could snuff it as well, to light another if needed.

Might be fitting to be somewhere in Arts.

It could be like weed. No Combat input in it

Except that weed will screw you up if you have to fight directly after smoking it laugh.gif

It'd be nice if it was sort of like those...things on Achaea, I forget. The rites or whatever where you just don't get hungry in a room while one is up. Nothing too major, just something like it makes you less hungry or is just a cute effect. Either way it's a decent idea.
Verithrax2006-06-09 01:45:45
Say, mana/health/ego regen, or slows down hunger, can only be done in indoors room, affects everyone in the room periodically? No real use in the middle of combat since it would heal everyone, but useful for recovering. Not even good for bashing since most bashing areas are outdoors.

Does anyone else keep seeing 'Incest' when they scroll up and down the forums? wacko.gif

And to add to the topic... mm incense smells like a very fragrant idea laugh.gif Okay you can stone me now.

My personal preferene to make them useful for rp and combat would be you burn one herb and you are constantly cured of any afflictions that that herb gives for the next 20 seconds, very powerful but limited and required prediction and the opponent can easily switch to a differnt tatic during the twenty seconds its burning and curing you.
Vix2006-06-09 02:27:47
Or it could be required to have a lit incense stick at a shrine in order to offer. The sticks stay would have to stay lit for a long time though.
ferlas2006-06-09 02:36:53
Thats not very useful vix, but I still like it anyway, I just adds a bit of extra work when you want to offer for rp reasons.
Unknown2006-06-09 03:11:23
Not everything has to have a combat value.. I think it'd be a nice RP tool. Maybe have it slightly increase the amount of essence gained from offerings if you light one at a shrine? And I'm in favour of keeping it to cosmetics when lit in other places.

(Bellator Societas): Athana says, "Oh I thought that thread said incest,
flavoured air!"
Unknown2006-06-09 06:08:09
Incense wouldn't be flavored air.

The hookah would most closely be considered flavored air.

Hookah = Fun.

That's all I have to add.
Tervic2006-06-09 06:49:39
Or adding incense while offering would add some kind of bonus multiplier to the offering, say, 1.2 or something smallish like that.
