Lusternian Heraldry

So, I was bored and came up with this:

This rather large image is a preliminary coat of arms for Verithrax. The blazon would be Sable, an eagle Or, in base two quills Argent if I still speak Blazon fluently. I was considering doing a sheet of those, with one for each major organization, and a few for Divine Orders and important families (The La'Saet get to choose between a horrid chimera and a hog, just like the Harkonnens I'm sure they're modeled after). I wanted to ask if there's interest in those, and if they're appropriate for an Artisanal entry.

Not again.

Heraldry always struck me as pointless and not in mood or theme of the game. First in Achaea, and doubly so in Lusternia.
Ashteru2006-06-13 13:33:34
I'd actually like it......and it WOULD fit Magnagora and Celest...

Just to make myself clear, I'm not proposing a heraldry system for Lusternia (Even though the reason people hate it is because they don't understand blazons, which are quite simple, really) but rather just showing something I did for the hell of it.

Per pale embattled Sable and Gules, in sinister chief a portcullis Argent, chained Or.

Took a little messing around with some archaic Windows software, the Gimp, and Inkscape to get something that looks decent. You also gave me no clue as to what you wanted, so I came up with something I thought would look nice.
Ashteru2006-06-13 15:21:05
Oooh, sweet. What does it mean?
Verithrax2006-06-13 15:32:37
Strictly speaking a coat of arms doesn't have a specific meaning, althouth some charges are taken as meaning this or that occasionaly. The blazon is just an unambiguous and specific way of describing the coat of arms.

Hehe, okay, nice.happy.gif

Oh thank you!
That's really nice.

That's cool, Verithrax! You should make some for Orders, great houses, etc. I think that'd be sweet.
Unknown2006-06-14 05:00:39
I'm not a fan personally, even though I do know you're doing it for kicks tongue.gif. I just think coats of arms look lame in general.
Verithrax2006-06-14 11:30:29
The Order ones are relatively easy given how each god already picked a symbol. B ut first I'm going to do Celest because Celest is obviously Sable, a base wavy barry wavy Argent and Azure, an estoile Argent.

Oh, you put it in your sig, cool. Although you might want to get the full-size image and shrink it, I'm pretty sure it's a transparent PNG.

Just did it quick, lost the transparancy somewhere during the conversion.
Just uploaded again as a transparent gif. Should be a bit better.
Verithrax2006-06-14 15:12:51
Keep it as PNG, gifs are teh suck.
Vix2006-06-14 17:27:26
I don't get the chained fence thing...
Richter2006-06-14 18:00:04
I don't really get the language, but I've never dealt with this kind of thing before. I think mine would have to be something like... I dunno, a snake on one side, and a fist on the other, representing Richter's craftyness and Murphy's Murphy-ness.

I want one to go next to my chibi

Having a knight without a coats of arms is like having a unicorn without a horn. It's just silly, and saying it doesn't fit theme to have one is even sillier.

Coats of arms are nothing more than personal insignias, formally registered with a governing body. And while each kingdom has/had its own rules regarding what makes an acceptable insignia, it only gets complicated when you're trying to describe complex visual details verbally.

The really fun part of coats of arms in role-play is watching them evolve as descendants inherit from their parents, modified with slight variations.

Heck, just thinking about it makes me want to start a college of heraldry for Lusternia.
