Okay, a little fun poll here.

Which SF TV show or movie (or we can have novels as well) would you draw your inspiration from if you were developing your aethership crew and adventures.

I tried to note shows where ships and space battles play a major role. That's why I didn't include Doctor Who, for instance.

I loved Quark. I still recall cracking up during a scene when a human woman was attracted to this plant-man. Somehow she talked him into having sex, so the plant-man had them both lay down on the floor with their arms and legs pointing up in the air. Then, he had them both chant, "B! B! B! B! B!" After awhile she asks him what happens next. He tells her that now they wait for the bee to arrive....

(Okay, even I was pretty young when Quark came out.)

Star Trek TNG is the only one of these shows that I ever really watched, so... yeah.

I honestly don't remember much about quark, seeing it as cool just 'cause it was SF (and I was really young too).

Maybe if I ever drop a lot of money and buy a ship, this could be the template for Tully. It is a sanitation vessel.

I really like Oceans Unmoving from Sluggy Freelance. Anyway, that's how I think of aetherships.

I never liked Star Trek, yet when Aetherships first came out, I was totally acting like I was in a Star Trek episode dry.gif

Me: "All stations, report!"
Crew: "Primary turret, ready" "Secondary turret, ready" "Empath, ready"
Me: "All stations, locked. Avaerin ready for launch"

etc

Starcraft, Skies of Arcadia and Cid Highwind blush.gif

Futurama.

hmm...I'd have to say Star Trek, Firefly and Farscape and erm...another show...brain hurts...

Futurama.

I get it! The engines don't move the ship, the engines move the universe!

I'm an orthodox and say Star Wars. But only for one reason: when I was 6 or so and watched "a New Hope" for the first time, I was THRILLED to see Luke sit inside Falcon's turret and shoot at Tie Fighters. Each time I man the aether turret, I imagine it to look exactly the same way.

I don't know that I draw any real inspiration from things like that, but my ship says one quote from Serenity, as kind of an inside joke, and the Stroke of Luck name was because I wanted something like Setzer's FF6 airship, and Talon Karrde's Wild Karrde. Or, Lando's Lady Luck, something like that.
Hazar2006-06-14 20:18:24
I actually get my inspiration from Snow Crash, where they're talking about giant fantastical machines they'd race around the nascent, empty matrix.

The Blackjack ftw thumup.gif

So I guess that Stroke of Luck is as luxurious as Blackjack?

And yeah, FF in general should be a reason of inspiration smile.gif

The only Quark I know of is the White Dragon from Lunar: SSSC... but that isn't about space smile.gif

As for insperation, I have to vote Star Trek. As anybody who was upon the Starhaven's first voyage will remember the 'Set engines to warp speed' illusion... I should apologize for that, I just couldn't keep it in.

Even after Miyumi suicided, Peter always reports in with his location, module, and status when Tervic allows 'im to go along on an aether hunt.

If I ever do get a ship of my own, I think I might copy the layout of the ship from the SNES game Cyber Knight... just have to add three extra rooms for turrets.

Had I finished it, I was modelling mine off of the Weatherlight from MtG. Although the thought of making one resembling a Protoss Arbiter is pretty neat.
Sybl2006-11-10 01:59:09
Descent: Freespace. Specifically, the Shivan Battlecruiser from the first episode, but really all the ships.

I was vaguely slightly inspired to design my aethership like that in Tenchi Muyo ninja.gif And inspired by Cowboy Bebop for space travel *duck* Ahem, but I guess out of the list you gave Firefly would be a cool model too (albeit I've only seen the movie...)

omg and I just remembered... Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!! Panic.gif
Gandal2006-11-10 02:21:53
Cowboy Bebop is one of the shows that my friend and I watched at 3 AM during sleepovers when we were supposed to have gone to sleep...others being fullmetal alchemist and samurai jack when another friend comes over...
