Not good enough for an artisinal, but I still wish for everyone to see!
He was rather rushed, as I had to work on a campaign website for my sister's friend as well as go to work, buuut now he will forever be immortalized on the forums!
Feel free to constructively criticize, just keep in mind this is my first time with computer artwork, or...any artwork beyond stick figures to be honest. My last art class was in 8th grade.
His trunk is a bit uneven, because the pen tool and I have a love hate relationship.

Wow, nice.
Charune2006-08-04 03:02:37
Very cute!
Verithrax2006-08-04 03:05:16
Very nice.
Diamondais2006-08-04 03:06:41
Very nice, dark though. That might be my actual moniter though.
Veonira2006-08-04 03:10:25
Really? Man, I fought with photoshop so hard. It was supposed to be darker, it looked like a darker brown in PS, then I exported it and it was so light! I think it's your monitor though.
and thanks!
and thanks!

I actually like it.
You should try submitting it anyway. It probably won't win, but you might get a runner up or something.

You should submit that.
How did you get the fur look?

Heh, I submit it for July so I won't submit again. Although my submission was a little more sloppy, I had forgotten to take the outlines off the tail/head and it looked weird.
The fur took me ages upon ages, and I'm still not happy with it, especially on the head. It took a lot of special furryish brushes, smudging, highlighting, blurring, multiply/lighten brushes, etc.

The only thing I don't like about it, is that different parts of the image are different styles, but that could also be a nice thing.
Like the Eye and tusk and ground, vs the backwall and fur and feet.

Yeah it was really rushed ^^. Maybe for fun I'll actually make a nice background. Of icy tundras for him to frolic in. Ooohhh.

One technique that really helps with hair/fur is using multiple layers. If you have a smallish brush, and set the size to diminish with distance used (I can look up the actual commands for doing that if you want) you can do three or four layers. Each layer gets a single colour, and you just go through the base shade, then the shadows, and then the highlights. Then you can go in with an eraser on the same settings and clear out pieces from all but the bottom layer.
It can take a little while to get the hang of it, but it's one of the best ways to get hair. In theory, anyway. I'm still working on it myself.
I'll edit in a link to a web page I'm thinking of in a second.
Edity: This woman is incredible.

I actually like the background wall, better than the ground. But thats just me because in today's age I like it better when things don't look computer generated.

I think I know what website you may be talking about. I actually tried that, I made my own fur brushes for it and stuff, but it was hard for me to really get it to look nice, it ended up looking like he had yarn fur. I think there's a bit of that on his legs though (underneath the top layer), which is why they are more bushy.
And yeah, I'm not happy with the floor, but I was having trouble getting it right, so I just went with something easy.

I think you should submit it - I like it, and some truly crappy things (in my truly crappy opinion) have won small prizes in the past, so I'd say you stand a good chance at a merit award and maybe even second place.
Erk. Looks like I'm calling your picture crappy. Ignore that sentence's 'crappy' wording.
EDIT - I only read the first post, so shut up.

Veonira2006-08-04 03:45:26
OH. No, I was looking at some guy's.
But, wow. So bookmarking that.

It looks 3-D for some odd reason. Love the affect!
