Just wanted your opinions!
One of the most important needs of Lusternia is to grow its playerbase. If we want to ever develop more major player organizations (*cough*hallifax*gaudiguch*cough*), we need grow. Thus, we’re taking a serious look at how Lusternia treats newbies and the newbie experience. We’re hoping to make quickstart and detailed newbie help files as well as a FAQ. If you want to help us with that, check out the forums where we asked for ideas.
Also, IRE auditors have been checking out what the newbie experience is like in Lusternia by creating characters and testing the waters. In a nutshell, we need to definitely improve the newbie experience. There were reports that requests for help on the newbie channel went unanswered, even after asking for help 3-4 times. Apparently, the audits found that newbies were often ignored in their guilds and even given a cold shoulder in some cases.
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to make someone’s first time experience here to be as fun as possible! Remember back to your first time in a text game, and consider that some newbies here have never played a text game before. It can be overwhelming! Although I know guilds aren’t going out of their way to alienate new players, if we find that specific guilds are driving away players, we may have to step in to figure out what the issues are. But I’m hoping by this post everyone will at least be made aware of our seriousness in meeting the needs of newbies and help us work towards making Lusternia as fun and exciting for first time players as well as for the old hands!

I think many of the Guilds that have had complaints in the past are working on making the experience better for the young, yet not all together coddling. Takes some time to find the people who are willing and capable of taking care of the newer players as well make something that works the best for them.

Not to sound harsh, but when you spend two hours carefully helping each new player only to have 90% of them vanish, it just feels like such a waste of time. If the newbie intro was good enough (covered skillchoices, had learning that modeled real learning instead of being fake, explained the 15 lesson at a time limit, explained registration, explained grace, explained powerblocking (or if powerblocking was automatic so we didn't have to explain it), explained nexii and tutors, news, messages, the planes, taught to use AB (I mean, they're taught it, but very few ever seem to understand it, since it nearly always has to be explained again), etc), then newbies wouldn't need so much teaching when they got out of the tour, and teachers wouldn't get so burned out about it.

Completely agree with it.
I've made alts to see how other guilds are. On one, I ended up joining the guild with no welcome at all, and there were several capable guild members around to train me. I even asked a few questions, no answer, so I ended up self learning with no guidance besides the GHELP scrolls. I eventually dumped that alt, of course.

I'd volunteer to teach them all, but then I'd need to be in every guild at once I love teaching the little guys (or girls), but of course I have that damned soft spot where I give things away....

Some Hartstone had this whole "It's not my job" attitudue and were refusing to teach leaving it to the few guild officials that were around.
I don't know if this is true for others but it's annoying to me to see

Regarding the intro, I believe we have a very solid intro that goes over the basics. We did a lot of testing and research with people who've never played text games to develop our intro. The thing is, it simply can't be too long or they'll get bored and leave. However nice it would be to put everything into the intro, there's a very limited amount of information that new players can absorb.
I appreciate that one gets burned out if you spend hours helping newbies. If you can't stomach teaching a newbie, fair enough. But there's no reason to be rude or not answer a simple question. Indeed, one report I received was that a guild refused to tell a newbie how to get to Newton Caverns until they learned some guild skills!

Wouldnt that be helping them? Kicking and punching in Newton is not very easy, nor is it very fun for them.

When I'm around, I always make sure novices have training, making sure someone is going to train them before I continue whatever it was I was doing. There was only once that I had to really push, with 3 Keepers around, so that was particularly annoying.
There are some people though that really push your buttons. Those of us who's job it is in the guilds to teach novices can very easily get frustrated with certain newbies. Not the ones that don't understand. Those are the most fun to train, the ones who need your help and are really trying. When they finally get it, it's amazing. It's the ones that refuse to talk to you, don't follow any advice at all, then proceed to complain because they don't have any skills, no equipment, and are lost. As much as we players like to train people, when people like that show up, it really makes it difficult to enjoy that part of the game.
Nevertheless, we try our best. All we can do is nip the training apathy in the butt when we see it and continue to train like we always do.

Deadly punching and kicking is... I'd know.

It would probably depend on how they refused. Politely explaining that they wouldn't have much fun kicking and punch and learning these skills would make everything easier for them is one thing. Saying No! You may not! without explaining is another.
Can I ask which Guilds did poorly? I know there's all sorts of reasons to not say, but it might be helpful for those who did badly to know how and where they need work. Just saying "Improve!" doesn't give much direction in where improvement is needed. A Guild might think they're doing fine, when really there's places they're falling short, for example.

I've kicked my way through Newton before without a problem. Anyway, I suppose it would be helpful if the reason was explained to them and they were helped to learn the skills. But just saying, "Learn X skill and then ask me" isn't very helpful. Besides which, there's really no purpose to keep how to get to Newton secret. All you need to do is tell them to type PORTALS and walk north.

So... I volunteer to the the first multi-guild trainer come on, I have time for them all (bye bye free time)
Reiha2006-08-30 04:41:14
I really would like to see more players, and I try to teach novices when I can, but most of the ones I teach are like, "Okay, I get the point, please leave me alone." My favorite novice was Dorigom (never saw him again) who asked me if Amaru was an NPC when I said that I had to leave temporarily to help fend him off our citizens
I think somehow improvements can be made, but when you see the people you spend hours teaching go poof! it's very disappointing, seeing as that time spent could have been bashing or otherwise.
Maybe secs and undersecs can get some benefits (a minimal amount of credits) for doing the job they do, which might encourage more people to become undersecs and such.

Unfortunately, there's no way to set something up so it can't be gamed for free credits. For those really interested in helping newbies, apply to become a guide!
Everiine2006-08-30 04:44:12
The help files say teaching has a small benefit. I've been teaching novices almost since I started playing the game and have seen no such thing. Not that I teach for the benefit, but it's a little odd that the help files say it, but I've seen nothing from it (unless its hiding behind me. I never look there.)
EDIT: People have told me to apply for Guide before, but I can't seem to find a reason. I like helping novices in an RP setting. I've always felt that if I was there, with them, teaching them, they'd feel more comfortable coming to me when they had questions. I dont' know about anyone else, but I was always afraid of the Fate Guides when I was a novice...

Oh, misunderstood what was being said then. Yes, just demanding without explanation wouldnt be too good.
Reiha2006-08-30 04:46:50
Teaching novices is supposed to get you a very small portion of lessons, if you are not trans. Not sure if I've seen the benefit either.

Do you mean that (and these numbers are completely made up) if I taught say, 30 Tracking, I'd learn 2 or 3 myself? That may be why I've never seen the benefit, I don't pay attention to those things .

Ive heard it was much much higher, but that was awhile ago.
