Revisiting censorship in games

While doing my daily round of internet comic-reading, I found Penny Arcade's newest comic. The game industry is under a veritable barrage of insanity-based verbal and legal attacks, and while this is a constant, it always amuses me when another idiot steps forward to put his/her wrinkly old self into a business they know nothing about.

Check out the comic, read today's post on the main page.

Between this mess that could potentially capsize the ESRB, and the gangs of overenthusiastic lawyers and politicians nipping at the ankles of every potential issue, I imagine we'll be stuck playing Viva Pinata, the newest version of Barbie, or Pokemon, for all eternity.

That is, until Pokemon is branded as being too violent. ninja.gif

All I have to say is:

Joe: Bob shot me!
Bob: Jane made me do it!
Jane: I blame the media.
Media: Videogames.
Game Industry: Personal responsibility?
Personal Responsibility: *AFK*

I nearly choked when I read that. The cookie I was eating disintegrated into hundreds of violent particles, attacking my throat as I laughed. Whee.

That bill will implode as soon as a court thinks about looking at it.

What we need is a law that makes people take responsibility. Johnny is a sociopath who gets bullied and hates everyone? Don't censor.gif buy him censor.gif GTA then, douche. If he shoots up his school, it's not the game's fault.

I don't see how video games is any worse then Cowboys and Indians. At all.

You see, nobody really makes money off of cowboys and indians, however there are many lawyers out there who think the game industry makes too much money that they arn't get a hold of.

Meh,

I wonder about people sometimes. They buy them games, then complain. You'd never think they'd look around and find out about the game before buying the darn thing.

It's almost like smacking your kid with a belt. It's effective, but no one does it anymore. We let our kids decide what's good for them, even if they really don't care about the story, just the images.

I feel really old now.

Well, you know the story of that guy that went crazy and murdered and raped half a dozen innocent grandmothers sitting on the park. He used to be in drugs, was an alcoholic, was kicked out of the military because he was too wrong in the head to be there, and he also had a PS2 at home that stole from a shop. So, police goes and catch him, and newspapers all go:
"Police catches Videogamer murderer"

It's like with roleplaying games, but as roleplaying games are already beat up to no end (and there's weird people that say they might be even good for children) they now focus on videogames.
