I've got a question for you all. I've decided to make an alt. Now, my question is, is it a good or bad idea to share who she is? I've noticed lots of people do, in their sigs and so on. But I can think of reasons why it wouldn't be a good idea.
For one, I don't want to be hassled by people who can't/won't believe that I'm perfectly capable of seperating the two or that will want to discuss things dealing with one while I'm playing the other or expect me to logoff the one I'm playing if the other's org is being attacked or there's an influence or something.
What do you all think?
Edit: Oh, and people who might think that I'd let my alt get in the way of Noola's responsibilities - don't worry. Those come first. My alt is just for fun and cause sometimes I want to do something different.

Best thing you can do is make the alt, wait till you see youll play it often enough to count as worth mentioning, and if you feel you do you can add it. Nothing wrong with doing so.
As for expecting you to log off said alt to help Celest, Dont Do It. Its really bad form. You are not Noola while you are on that alt, you are your alt.

I would hide it if possible. That way you can earn things on your characters own merits than by someone knowing you as Noola and giving you that early promotion, etc. (not saying this would happen in this case, but it does happen)
Sometimes people will end up guessing, especially if you have a distinctive speech pattern.

I wasn't planning on it. In fact, what I said was, I didn't want to be expected to. Not that I'd want to do it. Doing that is terrible and people who do should get splinters under their toenails. Or something.
And hey, it goes both ways. I wouldn't want folks from my alt's org badgering me to logoff Noola either.

The expecting part was for them.

Absolutely no reason to feel obgligated to tell people who your alts are.
Though funny story. I got IMed with someone threatening me one day telling me there were going to tell Matt that I was abusing my position and that I should not have a mortal alt. They thought I was Estarra

Oh! Duh. I've had a brainless morning. You should have seen what I did trying to make coffee this morning!

That IS funny!
But it's not obligation, it's just if something's going on in my alt's org that everyone's discussing, I wanna be able to give my opinion on it too is all, without people being like "What do you know?" Or if something happens that's funny and I wan to post it on the Quotes board, I don't have to worry about giving myself away cause it's already given away.
But if the downside of sharing outweighs the upside, that's what I want to know from folks who may have experienced it.

You're not?
(Although Matt did have his own mortal alt. )

Don't tell who your alt is. People tend to carry an ooc astigmatism no matter how objective they claim to be, and it's more fun I think to separate your characters IC as well as in your own mind.

Wise advice. Some think its free game to treat an alt as they would the main. And its not much fun to be trying to do something new, only to get tells from those who normaly talk to you on a main, or try to push that alt into the shoes of your main- i.e. asking advice, or what ever.

Alrighty, thanks everyone!
I've decided my alt-girl's identity will remain a secret. I'll make a new forum identity it I need to post anything funny or something like that from her POV.

Can't hurt to just tell people you trust.
Estarra2006-10-26 03:30:50
I strongly recommend against telling others who your alts are (even your friends). Invariably, many who know a person has alts will treat those alts differently (either harsher or kinder) than they would normally.
Thinking that people will separate OOC/IC from what they read on the forums (or hear outside the game) is just naive.

I think the proper ettiquete is to tell everybody that it's someone else's alt. Then when Thorvald the Persnickety gets angry at you for shortsheeting his penguin, he'll take his cross-character aggresion out on an innocent bystander instead of you.
