So, I once got myself a forging hammer, and was quickly surprised to find how much conflicting info I got from people about them so here are some myths.
MYTH: You have to wield the forging hammer for it to work.
Just don't have it in your pack
MYTH: The forging hammer, like the harvesting gloves, reduces your balance time.
It halves the number of strikes, not time between strikes. So faelings DO benefit from them.
MYTH: You get better stats with a forging hammer than without....
I don't have to time for this one, hence the thread.

Hmm. I always was wielding my hammer when was forging, i never heard about not having to wield it. So i haev no idea about that one.

Hmm. Faelings will forge faster then human. Forging is on standard balance timer, so all races with faster balance recovery, recover balance from forging faster. Hammer will halves how many times you have actually to hit weapon/armour.
I become aslaran becose i wanted to forge faster. And i was forging faster as aslaran then as human.

I hope admins will confirm that its just a myth. It better be a myth.

Assuming forging hammer works similarly to Achaea's, you have a better chance of getting "extremes" with a hammer.
Imagine forging worked like this: Strike 10 times to forge a weapon. For each strike, add the value of a 10-sided die. You've got a range of 10-100.
Now, if you get a forging hammer, you only strike 5 times. Obviously this would cut your stats down to 5-50, which is undesirable. So the rule becomes: Strike 5 times. For each strike, roll a 10-sided die and then double it.
With the hammer, you still have a range of 10-100, but the possible values are a bit weirder. No odd numbers for one. Also, you have to be lucky only 5 times in a row instead of 10 times. On the other hand, if your first few strikes are crap, you've got less chance to turn things around and end up in average-land.
(Note that this is all as explained by Clementius on the Achaea board. It may work differently in Lusternia, and I may be misremembering, but I think this is accurate).

Would anybody have the time to actually test if they give better stats? Even if I was a forger, I simply do not have the time to forge all day long.

all I know is that I wasn't getting 40/40 shields without the forging hammer before.
Also while using my forging hammer to make leather armour, I was getting stat increases of 3.. so I don't know what a stat increase of 1.5 looks like without the hammer, I was also getting some hammer blows of 0

Possible that it just makes you make better weapons more often. However, I always thought you had to wield it for it to work... Guess not.

You should Ildaudid, all he does is: defend the catacombs or froge every friggin' single day.
Anarias2006-10-19 23:15:32
How is a hammer used in making leather armour?
Daganev2006-10-20 01:52:13
Don't know, but when you craft armor, sweat flies from your face as you bring your hammer down on it.

If the Hammer of Forging works anything like the other ones in the other IRE games, then the hammer does either very well or very badly.
You don't get 'mediocre' stats per se, you get either very good or very bad. That's your spectrum.
Of course you might get a few mediocre ones here and there, but the scale tips that way, generally.
