Hello peoples, I need a little advice from all you wise sorts. I want to make a character but I'm not sure what race I should pick. I've played achaea a bit but I'm not sure if it's for me and all, so I'm here to give Lusternia a whirl Soooooo my question is, I want to be a mage, an aquamancer I think and I can't decide between all the neato races. I have to say that I think I like merians the best, and then faelings, and I suppose I can't count out humans, oh and trill look neat to. Maybe I should also point out that I'm not some super combaty sort of person, I never could get the crazy combat systems in Achaea But I love the idea of influencing and such. So ya please do open the flood gates of sweet sweet advice everyone

Faelings are very very good with influenceing. Psionic merian would also work.

Totally.

Depends on which commune/city you would want to join...
If you are joining Glomdoring, for example, you can become a Shadowlord Faeling if you are an Ebonguard, Shadowcaster Faeling for using Crow or Night totems.
There are Merian Lords and Imperian Merians in Celest.
High Elfen in Serenwilde, Elfen Lord for Serenguard.
Master and Brood Viscanti in Magnagora.
Or if you want to be a Warrior, you could pick a class based on natural weapon familiarity.
Only Faelings and Thrills can fly, and there's no flight artifact. Some guilds have skills that enable flight (Nihilist wings, Crow cloak). You could also fly if you had a flying mount, though all flying mounts are legendary steeds I believe, which is a mythical ability in riding.
Do you want to be quick? Slow yet strong? Don't like fire, want natural resistance to it? You're a hardcore hunter, it's all you can think about? Want the race solely for RP potential?
There's a lot of factors in picking a race.

Merian or faeling would be good if you want to influence. You basically need 14+ charisma for it. Faelings are the best with their sip bonus though.
Influencing can be fun. I recommend first trying begging out in Newton on finks, and if you likeit, spending exactly 89 lessons learning Influence. That will teach you Supplication. Alternate between Supplication and Begging to influence "bash." A great place for this is the Tosha Monestary, but you'll need to be level 25+ first, and may risk losing a battle or two until you get the hang of it. Get bromides, of course, they're like health potions for your ego. If you're using Charity influence (begging/supplication/wheedling), you'll want to be essentially naked, since the prestige of your clothing gives you penalties (for other types of influencing, your clothing and jewelery's prestige gives you bonuses).
If you are going Faeling and may want to bash at some point, I definitely recommend becoming a telekinetic (choose psionics as your third skill and specialize in telekinetics when you can), as that will give you a skill that lets you use your ego as health. Otherwise, take whatever sounds fun

The second charity attack is "Supplication" not compliments.

Come new players!
By the way, are shadowcasters any good?

Well, unspecced faelings are already quite decent as casters, so I'd say so. Remember that, for unspecced faelings, their con looks like 9, but sips like 13 or 14.

Hrmmmm, so it's sounding like faelings are the best bet I suppose. I really just wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up and pick something really ill suited to being an aquamancer or that would make rping difficult. Is flying really that important? and the merians get an equilibrium bonus but the faelings a balance which I think I'm still a little iffy on the difference hehe I want a character I'll have fun rping which I think I could do with faeling or merian so thats good, and it sounds like they would both be good influencers and good at being mages as well, and I think they'd both be fine in new celest, which is where I have to go to be an aquamancer right? So I'll try to make my mind up between those two but if anyone has a recomendation either way I'd be happy to hear it

As a warning - both are initially kind of squishy, even with the faeling sip penalty. Merian are a bit squishier, but hit harder.

If you want to influence far more than bash, go faeling (you can influence from 1-70 pretty easily and faster than you can bash, but it gets slower at that point).
If you want to bash far more than influence, go merian (the eq bonus is nice).
I think either would be fine for what you seem to want to do.
