I would really like to see people be able to maintain two bloodlines at one time.
The bloodlines you're born into (where someone considers you for their child), and the bloodline you marry into. There really shouldn't be a sudden neutering of the born into bloodline if you decide to take such-and-such a name's last name.
If you divorce, you get cut off from the marriage bloodline, so you're back into only one bloodline until you marry again.

I think the real problem here is that Great Houses were meant to take a long time to achieve, so having two families squabbling over which gets to keep the newly married couple was actually intentional.
I would like to see, however, children being born active in their parents' active family, and inactive into the other, so they could later choose to acknowledge the other half of their heritage should they wish.

Great houses are -not- going to happen under the current system.

Oh they will. You just wait. Mark my words.

Great Houses are absolutely worthless under the current system. Scrap the bitch and get something that works.

I just want a family system that can accurately represent all the people in it and not have silly limitations just because of great houses. Poor Aesyra

Personally, I think the family system is fine as is. I've never had a problem with it.

Then I'm sure you'd be fine with whatever new one they'd put in place to fix it for everyone who has the most damnable time with it.
* Every family I can think of that is anywhere on the road to Great House already has a clan. A permanent clan that won't up and disappear if you drop below a certain number.
* Great House design, we assume, has been the limiting factor on certain aspects of families, such as number of founding siblings. I'll never be an official Talnara unless I marry one of my grand-nieces or something.
* Switching families is iffy. I'm still listed as an Estelonde, a house that basically no longer exists. It has 0 active members, one remarried, the other is dormant, and Shakaya wasn't a Kalas when we married, so I'm stuck with it. There's really no reason for it to still be around. I was NOT born into it, regardless of what it says, Joli and I created it when we got married; I married into it, so to speak.
* Marriage can be a total pain, if you care which house you end up in, or your family does.

- The d'Murani clan has been kept virginal, so that it may be used for other purposes. No news posts. Go us for thinking ahead...
- The family mechanic helpscrolls are very easy to read. They're terrifically easy to understand! If you choose to put yourself in a situation in which your family roleplay conflicts with the game mechanic, then that wasn't terribly intelligent of you in the first place.
- I'll give you that one.
- I think it adds rather a fun social dynamic. Naturally we d'Murani a terrifically snobbish about our offspring, and we won't have them marrying beneath themselves, socially. As there is no one above us, socially, everyone must marry in rather than out of the family.. problem solved.
Frankly, Sylphas.. there's only really one option for you. Divorce Shakaya, become a Magnagoran, and marry one of my many many unmarriable daughters. You'll be physically part of the best family in the basin, and you won't need to worry about these little mechanical problems any more.
Hazar2007-01-18 16:31:33
The mechanics designed to keep families from reaching Great House are bordering on the absurd when you consider what little they actually get from reaching that point.
And it leads to really irritating things like Aesyra and Sylphas.
Frankly, I want to be able to actually use FAMILY TREE and actually learn their bloodline.
