I've been very busy of late, but I was looking over some notes from a half-written book I'd like to submit to a library, detailing (theoretical) Lusternian technology. Since I sort of need a little feedback and have writers block, I wanted to share one of the technological theories I put in the book, to see if you liked it from a player's perspective, since the ideas written could be used to create a new skill or skillset.
Let me know what you think.
The ideas are for a technological skill that is more Lusternian based. You'd have classic gnome/dwarf type stuff, but with a little magic thrown in. Then you'd have Lucidian/gnome crystal type stuff like Xyl or Hallifax would have. I've got notes I'd want to flesh out.

Bombs
Bombs are a potent force to be reckoned with. I have heard old tales about these devices being used in the days of Old Celest, and other rumours of gnomes having access to these devices. Based on this, I've been able to theorize the types of bombs that might exist.
Bombs are usually circular or cylindrical devices, and they usually erupt with explosive force. The types of bombs I've theorized that exist include the following.
Toxic Bomb: This bomb is a little nasty. You craft it from steel and powerstone, then you also put in a whole vial of poison, any type. The magic of the powerstone causes the bomb to erupt as an aerosol gas, a mist that does the same damage if ye was stabbed with a poison blade. Except this causes damage to several people in a cloud of gas! Imagine, morphite, charybdon, or crotamine in such a bomb. The cloud might linger for a minute, unless one with elemental powers conjured a gust of wind.
Mad Bomb: This bomb, called the Kirby Kracker (after a famous dwarf who liked to draw murals), is made from elements found on the astral plane, probably sparkleberries. When a mad bomb goes off, it affects everybody it's area of effect, afflicting them with insanity (technically, a form of neurosis). Madness can include symptoms such as Dementia, Hallucinations, Epilepsy, Dizzyness, but it always includs a general loss of sanity and some damage to ego and willpower.
Rune Bomb: This is one of the more exotic bombs. This also uses steel and powerstone, but ye also need to include runestones. Up to six different rune stones can be packed into a bomb. When the bomb explodes, everybody in the area is hit with shards of the runes, made more potent by the powerstones. Thus, those in the area will be hit from multiple afflictions. There is no guarantee that all six afflictions will affect the victims though, unlike a totem or statue empowered with a rune.
Loudflash Bomb: This requires a powerstone, some steel, and some sulfur and salt. What happens when this bomb is thrown is a loud BANG is heard along with a blinding flash of light many times brighter than the sun appearing for just a second. The result is that those hit in the area are both blind and deaf.
Fire Bomb: One of the worst bombs, this item is formed by powerstone, steel, wood, and sulfur. The fire bomb is perhaps one of the only thing that can ignite a forest. Place it in any forest area and bang. Those in the area will also take some fire damage when it goes off.
Door Buster: Unlike other bombs, this is shaped as a wedge. It requires steel and powerstones, and unlike other bombs must be attached to a door. This will destroy a door, even if it's one of reinforced steel! Naturally, such a bomb is expensive to make.

Door buster bomb is a bad idea, because it would invite stockroom theft immensely.
Fire bombs would be a bad idea, in my opinion because someone could just be really annoying and keep dropping them in the forests. Plus, there is no anti-city skill like that, meaning cities would have an extreme advantage.

Personally, I think this is a really interesting idea, and I'd love to see, or even help, it be fleshed out more. Some Gnommish ideas, some Lucidian technology... I think it's great! Maybe when Hallifax comes out, it could be a warrior tertiary or something.
Structural Bomb
This bomb, crafted from powerstones and steel, can send building collapsing around where it is planted. The powerstone is bonded with the steel in such a way that when the powerstone detonates, the resulting explosion is tuned to cause damage to large bodies of steel, such as those used as foundations for creating buildings. As the buildings around begin to crumble, rubble would be scattered around the buildings, and the falling masonry would cause harm to those in the area.
That's quite a basic idea, but it would provide a city equivalent for the firebomb, more or less.

Didn't selthar spend an OOC year or two trying to get explosives? I don't think there are ever going to be bombs in Lusternia.

I like the ideas, too. I have a soft spot for fantasy technology, machines that are magic as well as science. It adds an interesting element, and is a bit more realistic in my mind; the physical laws of the universe exist intact in fantasy settings (with the addition of magic), so technology would be as useful in a fantasy world as it is in ours...in other words, they would be developed concurrently. It's always felt a little off that this isn't the case.

Phred, please mention that Selthar has been continuously trying for the past 70-some years to get explosives working, but with little success.

But he had something come of it, did he not?

Not really.
