Soooo, I was bored and thinking about a Tradeskill that hunters might be able to get, and I was playing Neopets.
Then it hit me, hunters could wrangle!

New Tradeskill: Wrangling

A wrangler would basically be someone capable of capturing animals
from the wild and either tame them, or breed them. These abilities
depend on the Wrangler's skill in Wrangling.
A pen would need to be built to breed, and two specimens of the
desired animal would be required to breed. Certain creatures can be
bred into different colours, and have a certain life expectancy. If
bred, the baby of the product is considered 'tame.' The wrangler could
then transfer ownership of the tamed pet to another player. While tamed
creatures will return to the wild once the wrangler or owner leaves the
realms, a bred pet will remain in the lands for its life expectancy.
Unless otherwise mentioned, pens can only be built in wilderness.
Certain pens can only be built in certain kinds of wilderness.
Young pets age. That'll be covered in further as the skills are brought
up. Only certain pets can be tamed. That too will be covered furtherly.
Certain pets can be mounted, though no pet would be a legendary pet.
Sex of bred pets are completely random!
Pets must be fed, and cannot be transfered to other players (save by
intervention of a wrangler.)

I kind of like it, actually. It could add another step for RP and also give people another ability with which to make some money.
However, it might tip the economy off-scale. Perhaps you should also be able to sell colts to denizens for raising, instead of just to other players.

Pet battling would be similar to miniature battling...I'm thinking you need to be at a Ranch, or have a fighting circle built by an Artisan or something. Yay for cock fights!

I actually really like this idea, but in fairness, my concern would be ,as you say, only those with Tracking can take this, which is mainly the Warrior classes.
Now having the companion from tracking and this one from Wrangling..would that not really make Warrior trackers potentially OP?
Believe me I am the first to complain about the downsides of tracking, but in the right situation, Tracking is also VERY usefull, I would love the added use of passive webbing from the spider Companion? make think about it, Warrior+wolf/hound companion (clamp)+spider companion = could be ouch.

I like that it's a tradeskill as well. Which I think is where it should stay.. rather than being another common skill. That way, it keeps it rare and interesting rather than just something that everyone has.

Though I was thinking of making the second fabled skill a skill that allows the wrangler to have TAMED at a time, or one tamed and one bred. Tamed animals return to the wild when their handler dies or quits the realm, while bred pets are like mounts. Some bred pets WOULD be mounts (the wakabi is an example.)
And yeah, the required skills to get Wrangling would be LowMagic and Hunting (partly thought up of to make trackers less crappy!), which allows Trackers, and Ecologists to wrangle. I thought it'd be a fun trade to have as well, and different from anything else out there.
The smaller something is, the easier it is to kill. A spider can easily be stepped on, after all.
Aquatic creatures will only follow you as long as there is water, as they can only survive in water.
