I haven't been around much the past 2 days because I've been quitting smoking and my personality isn't... palatable right now, I'm afraid. Anyone have great inspirational stories or something?

ummm, I used the patch, I haven't had a cigarette in about a year. But it isn't for everyone

When I was a young child, my sister and I used to steal our mom's cigarettes from her purse so she couldn't smoke anymore. She is still a lovely mother and hasn't killed anyone

I quit about 1-1/2 years ago after being a heavy smoker for 20 years. It is NOT easy and can take several tries over a multi-year period to finally quit.
The first week is the worst. The first month is generally pretty bad.
I used the patch and Wellbutrin. The patch takes the edge off the physical craving and the Wellbutrin takes the edge off the obsessive-compulsive craving. Should probably see your doctor before using either.
Sorry you have to go through it, but if you can make it through a month, you'll be through the worst part. The easiest way to backslide is thinking, Oh, I'll just bum one cigarrette from a friend for this one occassion. Trust me, that never works.
Good luck!

I did that too, except I broke them.
I haven't smoked, but I've known a lot of people who have and many who have been forced to quit due to health problems. It takes a lot of will power, a lot. But in the end, it'll be all the better for you. A few of us at least will be rooting for you while you're trying.

I smoked for about four years. Heaviest was about 40 a day. So not terrifically serious... and I got around it in two ways. I avoided those routines in which I habitually smoked (I definitely avoided the pub) and I kept a set of small colour print outs of cancerous lungs and throats... and some similarly lurid pictures on my computer backdrop and as my home page. And my then girlfriend would basically kick me out of her room if she smelt the slightest hint of smoke - which helped.
...Nowadays, I only tend to really crave when I'm drinking.

I am at the point that I can hang out around people smoking and not want a cigarette. I only smoked for about 3 years, anyway

Thats one cigarette every 36 minutes, assuming you never slept....

I've smoked cloves since I graduated from high school. I quit about 6 months ago and it's been a very hard process. Luckily for me where I lived up until recently only had one store in town that sold the brand and flavor I smoked and they were only upon until 6pm. The store was all the way on the otherside of town and the price of gas being what it was at the time made me say "Screw the cloves!". I still find myself licking my lips a ton and anyone that has ever smoked cloves can tell you why we do that.

Mmmm... I can empathize. Fortunately, I've never smoked more than about a pack a week. They're my dessert treat, and what I have when I'm bar-hopping. They're far too expensive (nearly $6 here) to smoke any more frequently than that, and I don't like the idea of hacking up a lung.

I went to see a hypnotist for this round of quitting. I know it sounds hokey, but he's helped with stuff in the past. I used to hit my SO in my sleep with my jimm-arms, and after one session I don't anymore. He also helped my friend stop bitting her nails and she had tried EVERYTHING! The wraps, nail polish, nail hardner, the stuff that makes your nails taste like :censor:, all of that. But he got her to stop right away. So I decided to see him for smoking. I definitely think it's helped, though I wouldn't say it's made it easy. I've made it farther than I ever have before right now.

I always grab my dad's and burn it so he can't smoke again (though I felt intoxicated with the smoke...) and still doing it today.

I definitely hope it works for you! My mom had a really hard time, and most people have to try more than once to find any lasting success. The average is eight attempts, I think, but as long as you're consistent in your desire to quit, I'm sure you'll make it. Good luck!

My aunt had a pretty good experience w/the hypnotist, can't remember what for though.

I never started. I don't know how anyone can. Cigarettes not only smell really bad, they taste pretty disgusting too. They turn your teeth yellow faster then they normally would, and your fingers get all gross and yellow too. Everywhere you go, you smell like cigarettes. When you go to the bathroom, your waste smells like cigarettes. When you fart? If people know you smoke cigarettes, they'll know it was you! You have a hard time breathing, you stay out of shape, and you develop cancer over the years as your lungs turn into black goo.
Not to mention that they kill your sense of taste and smell (is that why people like alcohol and coffee? Blech.) I couldn't live without my sense of taste and smell, how can you >.>
Why would you ever start? And if you've read the above...that should be incentive enough to stop!
You must stop, says I.

I smoke hookah on occasion (5 or 6 times in the 7 months since I turned 18). My brother smokes a lot, but he's in Iraq, and a few of my extremely close friends smoke a lot. I tried a cigarette once and it tasted rather like burnt barbecue sauce, so I never really picked up that habit. Plus I don't like the way it makes the back of my throat feel.

It seems a lot of teenagers around my age in this era are going to smoke -something- in their lives. Regular cigarettes, illegal things, whatever they get their hands on. Sad to see people lose themselves to that sort of thing- I've had to grow up around two parents who smoked for the first seven years of my life, and it wasn't fun. There's no way I'd live with myself if I started it, too.

Good luck with quitting! It'll be hard be it's worth it!
If you need some motivation, google pictures of the elongated cilia on your tongue that sometimes develops from smoking...
Annnnnnnnd, get gum or hard candy to chew on for when you get the craving. That really helped my mom when she was trying to quit.
