Today, Lusternia had it's first (dubiously named) 'Occurrence', wherein one of the monks in the Tosha Monastery started to lust for blood, and attacked villagers in the basin - and indeed the aggressors who tried to capture it. These are essentially mini-events that will generally last from 1 hour, to half a day. An occurrence, as opposed to an event, will rarely introduce effects that will drastically change the world - new guilds, new areas, new skillsets, etc. It might mean that there is a new resident in a village, or that one dies forever! It could be that a small structure is built along one of the mountains, or indeed, one of almost endless other conclusions.
Unlike with some events, the endings of occurrences are generally much more open to player input. This is, infact, almost the main idea behind them! They are almost entirely focused on developing small moments of roleplay between, most often, one or two organisations. What you saw today is a large-scale occurrence, due to it affecting (in the end) the entire Basin. Perhaps most importantly is the way in which these are handled by players. Today's occurrence took longer to conclude that I had originally anticipated. Feel free to experiment (within the bounds of Lusternian roleplay!) on ways to conclude it. Shamarah managed to conclude this one by having his pooka take over the mind of the monk, such as a pooka would any other player. I saw many reports of 'abjure web monk', or 'throw rope at monk', or 'fling hangedman at monk' not working - nothing stops emotes! Hopefully this won't prove to be a problem in the future.
I am hoping for these to become very enjoyable parts of Lusternia, with occurences .. occuring? .. atleast a few times a month. As always, if you have ideas for occurrences, or even full-blown events, you can email me at Ayridion@Lusternia.com or PM me here.
---
Feedback will be appreciated about the 'bloodlusting monk' occurence, or any suggestions for ways to develop this. Some parts were particularly bumpy, and I hope these will not be so noticeable in the future.
Good thinking, Shamarah!

While all I heard about it was a few comments elsewhere, I have to say that the idea is great.

I totally, totally agree. You guys are on the right track. Keep on trecking.

This is a really good idea Ayridion. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe some occurrences could be used to foreshadow greater events?
For the record throwing ropes at the monk didn't work either. >.>

Sounds excellent.

I just hope these "occurrences" don't end up like they did in Achaea. The first dragon to happen upon them would kill the main denizen involved.
EDIT: Without asking what was going on or knowing what people were trying to do.

I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised that no-one killed the monk.
Shamarah2007-04-06 22:10:36
I thought it was quite entertaining! I'm rather ashamed that it took me so freaking long to realize that you wanted actual emoted actions and there wasn't a quest we were supposed to do or something.
Hope to see more of them!

Yeah me too, heh I was trying to rustle the silly monk. It was fun though. And with the amount of times he pummled people I am glad he didn't get killed by anyone either. Also nice to see people from orgs trying to do something without instantly attacking one another.
Ashteru2007-04-06 22:46:48
Sounds nice, too bad I missed it. :/
Diamondais2007-04-06 23:44:31
Missed it, but hope to see future ones. Sounds like an overall neat idea, so long as they aren't killed when they aren't supposed to be.

Well if Ayridion is doing it, and it isn't a major event, I am sure he can ress himself up, spank the person who killed him and continue along. Actually that would be really funny to see.
Ildaudid kills a wandering bloodthristy mugwump.
A wandering bloodthirsty mugwump, climbs out of Ildaudid's pack staring at him with anger.
A wandering bloodthirsty mugwump, stabs Ildaudid in the eye, causing the blade to rupture from the back of his skull, killing him immediately.
Seeing his suituation hopeless, the soul of Ildaudid prays for Salvation.
A wandering bloodthirsty mugwump says, "Who's next?"

lol damn, missed it, this monk seemed like a man after my own heart >_<
Anyone have a log?

You bastards. You complete bastards. There is nothing I can bitch about in this because it's the sort of thing I've been asking for for ages and been told it was impossible. You're trying to kill whatever little enjoyment I get out of Lusternia.
Addendum: I may be wrong. Maybe they're horrible. All I know is what I've read in the OP.

How can you be enjoying the game if all you do is sneak around the forums, having quit the game itself?
Dysolis2007-04-07 02:52:49
So these occurrences, can change the way the basin works. like for example you said skills and guilds and even mentioned organizations. but what if it was on a much larger scale? would this event eventually do sometihing to break time and space some how? I like how this is going but perhaps i am once again jumping the gun

I was thinking he was using those examples as something that won't happen
Dysolis2007-04-07 03:02:55
hold on your right, occurances are shorter and does not have a greater effect. my bad not thinking straight
Unknown2007-04-07 04:09:56
Cool. Sorry I missed it but I look forward to being around for one of these!
Keep up the good work, oh ascended one!
