Okay heya everyone,
I play aetolia on-off after my character is in a bit of a rut due to whole vampirism thing and awful awful wife, so a friend was telling me great things about this place and I thought I would ask lest I make a newbie and steal someone's valuable time.
1. I heard the family/nobility/royalty rp was actually encouraged and accepted here as opposed to oh you're an O'lyryus that's great (In a sarcastic voice). Like Consanguine rp should be, but is not, is there any truth and could someone help explain?
2. Are credits needed here as well for tri (or quad etc) trans?
3. Do all the classes have the same skills sets and the only difference is in their orientation, based off their city/nexus location?
4. Is pking without reason and griefing allowed here?
5. Does race have a real impact on class, or are there many exception races for the main hunting stats?
6. Also what guilds tend to dominate city politics if possible?
If anyone can help I would be very grateful and I'm sorry for taking up any time if you feel my questions stupid.

1.) Yes, families are encouraged, and so is nobility, but royalty is often a position that has to be earned!
2.) No, not really, only if you want to Trans FAST. Plus you could buy them with IC gold, if you really want too.
3.) Theres only 5 (6?) achetypes, but the ones from different cities/communes will specialize into different skills!
4.) Yes, and no. Its frowned upon by all guilds, and griefing is (mainly) stopped by our avenger system.
5.) Choice of race is VERY important! Igasho would make horrible mages, while faelings don't really make the BEST warriors...
6.) Well, it changes from organization-to-organization! Usually the guild with the most political clout is the one with the leader in charge of the organization!
7.) (There was no 7 but...) This is ... well was... a decent place to be, with a decent attitude and decent people...

Dear Iltare,
If you are looking for a place to rp the old aetolian consanguine roleplay, I fear that you are not going to find it here. Magnagora has a reasonable racist and status based social structure but nothing like what I believe you're looking for. This however, does not mean that Lusternia does not have many things to offer a new player looking for new experiences, however, to remove any future disappointment, I would reply that the harsh structured superiority roleplay with all the 'your grace' and 'your worship' is not something you will find here.

1: Yes, nobility in families is encouraged in many places. Though keep in mind that your family will have to earn said status to really become so. Royalty, I'd say stay away from. King/Queen/Prince/Princess tend to all be part of the elected system titles. For example, I can understand if you were to run around saying you were a King/Queen in Glomdoring that the Queen of Night (GM of Shadowdancers) might see you as someone who needs to learn their place, and quickly. (Not saying anything about you Shayle, you were just the first example I thought of!)
2: Credits are needed, however you can earn them through IG means or by contests in the game. (Bardic, Artisanal, event contests, etc.)
3: Every class differs from another, though some share skills. How they're used by said class makes them different. An example being the Druids and Wiccans, they both learn Nature and Totems but they specialize into far different things.
4: Yes, but watch yourself. You may find yourself on the wrong side of the Avenger if you do so repeatedly. If you show no ability to stop without force from both sides (Victims org and your org), you've gone too far and need to tone it down.
5: Some races are far nicer in certain classes than others, a Merian will always do very well as a Aquamancer Mage whereas a Igasho is far better within the warrior classes.
6: I'd suggest not picking a guild based on their current stance in politics, it is hardly constant. Pick a guild that fits what you want to do in the game, not because they're the strongest/most influential guild.

Actually my character wasn't around for the ''old'' Consanguine rp and I am trying to escape it on aetolia at the moment, so I'm not looking for it, but the nobility system, with arranged marriages and a class system without excessive bowing and scraping is what interested me. The rigidity of the system led me to change houses and D'baen quickly after joining it .
In anycase for the nobility how does one know who is it and how would one proove oneself to those who lead those families?

If you want to belong to one of the families from the Lusternia histories, you'd best be prepared to roleplay your family role very well. Estarra doesn't want anyone giving the royal families a bad name.
Non-royalty families are played as each family's members see fit, of course.

2. Are credits needed here as well for tri (or quad etc) trans?
Yes. You will need credits to trans any skill. Gold is earned in Lusternia fairly easily if you're one to work for it and you choose a good trade skill. You can get by and even do very well for yourself without buying credits (not that I'm discouraging those that wish to support this fine game).
QUOTE(Iltare @ Apr 9 2007, 01:12 PM) 396940
3. Do all the classes have the same skills sets and the only difference is in their orientation, based off their city/nexus location?
There is a set of common skills that anyone may learn, but each guild has its own set of skills unique to it. Some guild skills are shared with other guilds of the same archetype. Some archetypes are available only to a certain organization (wiccan/druid in communes, mage/guardian in cities, for example). You also get to choose a specialization in certain skills once you learn about halfway (to Master), giving you greater freedom to customize your character and be a little different from your fellow guildmates.
QUOTE(Iltare @ Apr 9 2007, 01:12 PM) 396940
4. Is pking without reason and griefing allowed here?
Allowed, but strongly discouraged. There are coded systems in place (HELP AVENGER) to prevent too much griefing, and the rest is pretty much up to the players, trusting that we will reign in our own bad behaviors.
QUOTE(Iltare @ Apr 9 2007, 01:12 PM) 396940
5. Does race have a real impact on class, or are there many exception races for the main hunting stats?
Certain races that work very well with certain archetypes (classes). There are also racial specializations depending on the skills you choose. Every race has its advantages and disadvantages, but they're all pretty fun to roleplay. Check out the help files on the web site for each one.
QUOTE(Iltare @ Apr 9 2007, 01:12 PM) 396940
6. Also what guilds tend to dominate city politics if possible?
The government here is setup such that no one guild ever really dominates city/commune politics. The guildmaster from each guild makes up the city/commune council. The system here is more balanced and I think it's much more effective than other IRE games.

Welcome!
1. Families here can tie in to interesting aspects in the game (especially in Magnagora, where members of great families are allowed to draw more power, and have other specific rights). As for RP-ing royalty, it still doesn't quite work here, but there are some organizations where it's encouraged to RP superiority at least.
2. Credits are needed in all of IREs games to trans even a single skill. That said, if you can raise gold, you can buy all that you need in-game, it just takes a lot of motivation. Krellan and Ekard are good examples of people who have transed multiple skills with no OOC credits.
3. In Lusternia, there are 'archetypes,' which have somewhat similar skills. The archetypes are: Guardian, Wiccan, Druid, Mage, Warrior, or Bard. All members of an archetype will share some skills, and some will be different. For example, Celest's Mages (Aquamancers) and Magnagora's Mages (Geomancers) share the Illusions skill, and they share the lower levels of Elementalism. When they reach the skill rank of 'master,' the skills are differentiated, with Aquamancers learning Aquamancy, and Geomancers learning Geomancy, which makes the two very different. Also, even within a guild, there is a lot more freedom in what skills you want to learn. A Geomancer has to study Illusions and Geomancy, but they can choose their third guild skill out of Telepathy, Telekinesis, Dreamweaving, or Runes.
In summary, no. There are some similarities, but there are a lot of differences in the abilities of different guilds.
4. On the Prime Material Plane (where you'll spend most of your time to begin with), if someone kills you without a real reason (i.e. you didn't attack them first, and you're not in enemy territory), they will get 'Suspect' status on you. If they kill you again on Prime in the next 30 RL days, you can go to Avechna (a denizen), who will send out an Avenger which will kill that person whenever they log in again and force them to pray. The avenger also gives them incurable pacifism (I forget how long that lasts). Even if the person only kills you once, you can use karma to curse them (see HELP KARMA in the game).
If you travel to any other planes (you'll have to learn more about them IG), then PK is basically free, and nobody gets status.
5. Race has a pretty big impact. There aren't really any uber-OP race/class combos here like in other IRE realms though (Dwarf Occie/Akrabi Taekyon/etc). If you want to be a Glomdoring Ebonguard Warrior with the Night skill, then Faeling is probably the best race to hunt or pk. If you're going to be in Serenwilde and learn Moon instead, then you may want a completely different race. The race is a major factor, but different races are good at different things.
6. This varies somewhat. In Lusternia, the ruling council of the city is made up of a GM from each of the guilds. The day-to-day operations of the guild are actually run by the Guild Administrator. Because of the organization, it's impossible for one guild to actually run city/commune politics, because every guild has a representative on the ruling council. The guilds with larger populations usually have more say (Moondancers have historically been the most powerful in the Serenwilde, for example), but when it comes to real policy, it just depends on who the GMs are.

Just a tip: The roulette tables can be a huge help in buying credits in-game, just start with small amounts. That way, if you lose, you can bash it back fairly quickly. If you bet intelligently, and win, you can earn quite a bit of money. I got enough for 25 credits in about a week. That probably doesn't seem like much, but it made me like the roulette a whole lot more, especially seeing I don't bash all that often (and only on Prime when I do).

I have both lost and gained tons of money at the roulette table. Don't rely on them any more than you would in real life, or you'll lose all of the gold you earn. Still, it is possible to get lucky, if you're willing to risk losing what you have. That's the point of the game, but I finally gave up on it completely with Derian.

The House/Family issue is only vaguely relevant in Magnagora. You won't find find any notion of nobility or royalty tied to a family outside that city. At least, not in any sense that matters.

I didn't mean to say I liked griefing I despise it was just curious on stance.
Is the culture there different to other places?

Every city and commune has its own unique culture and history. Magnagora just happens to have more family history and they play into it well.

There's really no way to bet intelligently. It's completely a game of chance - at each spin, every number has an equal chance of being chosen. I'm not sure what kinds of odds they coded in to the roulette system in Lusternia, but really it's a game designed so that the player always loses, if they just play long enough.

That's.. not quite true. The Great Houses in Magnagora (although only one right now has become a player family as well) matter in Angkrag too..

I manage to bet intelligently, and I rarely lose all my money. It requires patience and the reward is usually less than other activities if you go with low-risk bets, but it's not hard to win at roulette. I stay away from the blackjack, though. The dealer definitely enjoys winning a little too much.

Is the culture there different to other places?
Magnagora is roleplayed as a racist and supremacist organisation. The races of viscanti (mutated master race), orclach (traditionally prized as warriors) and taurian (extremely racist bull-men) are prized as superior, as are the undead. The races of merian (the primary race of Celest), elfen (primary race of Serenwilde) and to a lesser extent faeling (primary race of Glomdoring) are regarded as inferior and are given less benefits.
Any race can make it in Magnagora, really, but if you're looking for more approval, and especially to join a Great House (a facet of Magnagoran roleplay which is becoming increasingly more important, especially in the d'Murani House), I'd recommend you choose a viscanti. While other organisations in Lusternia certainly offer noble families, the only place they are entrenched are Magnagora; they even have their own structures in the city, and each Great House has a section in the Magnagoran cemetery.

Families aren't huge, and there isn't really nobility/royalty, but as has been said, families are semi-important in Magnagora. Also, some families are very notable or have notable members, which does play some role in RP.
2. Are credits needed here as well for tri (or quad etc) trans?
A lot of people bash and use in game gold to buy them, I prefer to purchase mine from the site. It's pretty much like other IRE games with the amount of credits needed to trans skills. The bardic/artisanal contests are a good way to earn credits, and organizations usually offer them as prizes for contests and such.
3. Do all the classes have the same skills sets and the only difference is in their orientation, based off their city/nexus location?
All the classes (or archetypes as they are known here) have a diverse array of skills. Similar archetypes have similar starting skills, but they branch off pretty quickly. For example, every organization has a bard class. All bards have the Music skill, but once you reach Master rank (which most people do shortly after they graduate from novicehood) you can specialize in a skill. Each nation has a different specialization for their bards, which have very different effects. The same goes for the other archetypes as well.
4. Is pking without reason and griefing allowed here?
PK isn't encouraged the Prime Plane (Lusternia has multiple planes, but Prime is the main one). There is a system set up so that PK is kept to a minimum. The other planes are open PK, but griefing isn't really a problem. Most organizations rein in their own members if they get out of hand.
5. Does race have a real impact on class, or are there many exception races for the main hunting stats?
Short answer: Yes. There are at least one or two topics on the forums about classes and races, which would help you more than a short summary here.
6. Also what guilds tend to dominate city politics if possible?
It usually isn't a question of which guilds dominate, but which people dominate . The player government here works well, as all the guilds elect their own guild masters, and the guild masters represent their guilds on the ruling council.
We're glad you're interested in the game and we hope you join! We have some really wonderful people here, and having played other IRE games, this one is definitely my favorite.
