So I just transed bookbinding and got my magictome. I was just wondering if some others that have had more experience with it than I could share with me how they siphon the charges. Or if you just have to have someone sit for a second while you read it to them all day long.

Just wield it and it will absorve some of the damage and recharge the tome
Unknown2007-04-23 01:53:38
i know this, but once it is full I need to drain it. The only way i have seen is to read it to someone, and was wondering if there was another way
Ildaudid2007-04-23 01:59:37
Don't think so, think you just have to burn charges on yourself or someone else, and always keep it low before a big fight or something if you can.

I'm not sure the damage is actually reduced. You may want to test that just to make sure. I've had my magictome a long time, and I haven't really noticed much of a difference in damage between wielding it and not wielding it. But, then again, I haven't really been looking for it, either.
You'll also find that, since certain damage types charge certain scrolls, some of them fill very slowly. The healing ones fill right up, but the others seem to fill very slowly or not at all, depending on what you like to hunt.

I thought it had been broken for a while and never fixed, but then again I don't have a tome.
Xanon2007-04-23 03:07:08
Someone had suggested an idea about a new command to drain the tome in the envoy wiki. Someone else shot it down, not sure why. Something along the lines of "There's no need for that." So I'm going to assume you just have to manually drain it.
Shorlen2007-04-23 04:06:57
If it did absorb damage, than in my opinion, it would be a bit overpowered if it could be trivially drained. I vastly prefer the idea that you have to work to drain it as a downside to the near-omni-resistance the tome grants.
If it doesn't absorb damage, then... there's no reason to drain it =P

I think I tested mine awhile when I first got it and it doesn't actually reduce the damage you take at all. There really isn't any reason to drain it.

Eh? I always thought it absorbed damage @_@ Guess it was just in my head... sooo in that case, would it still be worth rune-ing a magictome to make it non-decay?

The way a magic tome's operation is described is usually along the lines of, "aborbs part of the damage and converts it into a charge yada yada." That shows up in at least one source of info on the tome. Perhaps it was originally supposed to work that way, or perhaps it does work that way, but the absorption is minimal.
The chief value is a relatively endless supply of magic scrolls. Whether you care about that or not, I don't know. I've worked the magic tome into my curing, but lately, I've been thinking about just writing myself a few scrolls of each type and ditching the trade skill.
I'm not even sure you can rune a magic tome, although it'd be interesting if you could.

It'd be cool to rune it to be a shield and then customize it to be the Tome of Evil Knowledge or something.

Just what we need. A bajillion copies of the Necronomicon running around the Basin.

You guys sure it doesn't give damage reduction? When Ciaran got his tome he swore up and down to me that it gave a 5% resistance to everything while wielded and uncharged.

Hrm.
Ok, next time it's convenient, I'll find someone in Glomdoring who's always wanted to kick me around a bit (shouldn't take long) and run some numbers.

Might be in your head, but I'm pretty sure it's also in the AB file. <.<

It is in the ab file, but I distinctly remember testing it out as a Nihilist, and it didn't reduce damage at all... unless it's changed since then?

I messaged Estarra once, and you can definitely rune a magic tome.
It's easy as pie to burn healing charges - I do it all the time while bashing. Curses, for example, are annoying, because it takes equilibrium (hence can't spam it, like you can with healing) and you can't read it to yourself - you have to find a willing victim.
I've never liked the fact that they don't do their minor damage absorption if they're full of charges. It's a small enough (if it indeed exists!) that it wouldn't hurt that much, and burning charges is just needless drudgery and bookkeeping (pun intended). The fact that you have to wield it to get the absorption should be enough.

OMG!
Please, can someone tell me if this awesomeness is possible?
