Sooo, I'm going to see Spider-man 3 today, but yesterday I managed to get my hands on the game version for the Wii.
Anyone else seen the movie yet? Played on of the many incarnations of the game? What did you think?
I only played for like an hour last night, but despite all the flack its getting, the game for the Wii was a whole lot of fun. The graphics may not be anywhere close to the Next-Gen versions, but having the entirety of Manhattan to run around in is just awesome. That, and the swinging mechanics are so incredible--actually flicking your wrists to send webs from the respective hands is awesome. On top of that, there is an RPG element present only in the PS2 and Wii versions. As you complete missions, complete attack combos, do aerial stunts, and collect certain things, you gain experience, which you can use in a sort of sphere-grid system to purchase upgrades to different abilities. So from a basic web-splat, you can upgrade into a web lasso and swing baddies above your head, and then upgrade into a web hammer, latching onto them and swinging them up and slamming them into the ground.
Aaand all of that is countered by the Black Suit. In the PS3 and Xbox versions you can only use the black suit in certain missions, but for the Wii, once you get it, you can use it until you discard it during the storyline (and then unlock it afterwards), but while you're in the black suit, you're 2-3 times more powerful, which is tempting, but you stop earning exprience to upgrade your abilities.
Overall, I just think the game is going to be a whole lot of fun. There's 8 villians, 5 storylines, and a dynamic gang system that I think more than makes up for the loss of textures at a distance and the occasional camera snaffu.
Aaand I seem to be rambling, but I spent last night reading lots of bad reviews, while I thought it was an entertaining game.. and what more can you ask for, really, right?
So i'm just curious if any of the other Wii owners picked it up, or if anyone at all grabbed it and what they think of it.

Saw it for free online about 2-3 hours after it was released.
It was decent.. some funny scenes, lot of action as usual. As to its quality regarding the comic, I'm not sure- never read the comic.

An IMAX theatre is showing it near where I lived. 'Course, it's like booked for the next three days, but next weekend! *drool*

I saw it last night, it was very good. I liked it better than the first two, but thought the amount of screen time with Venom was very small... Hey, maybe Venom will return for Spiderman 4, with Carnage!
My roommate was like, hey, they can't make a Spiderman 4, they're out of bad guys...
So I named off three or four off the top of my head. At the very least, Doc Connors still has yet to turn into Reptile, we still haven't seen Scorpion, or that Rhino guy, or Kingpin...

Sort of quasi-spoilerish, so don't read if you haven't seen it.
I don't like how they keep killing off villains. The only villain who they haven't actually killed off so far is Sandman, and he's meant to be reformed. There was a lot of potential with Venom - Carnage, Toxin, etc - and they've screwed it up unless they do some serious retconning.

I really wanted Venom to kill Sandman like he does in the comics.
Richter2007-05-05 23:08:16
Well, and here I was, thinking Harry was killed by the explosion, and then he's fine with no explanation. If anyone could come out of a WTFBOMB, it'd be the venom symbiote.

That's the strange thing. Spider-man was hit by one of the bombs in the first one, Harry is hit by one in the second.. but it completely vaporizes Eddie? I think there'll be some sort of regeneration, or some form of instant transportation, given that there's a peice of the symbiote in Conner's lab. And maybe we'll finally get the more pure Venom, who speaks of itself as a plural!

I just got home from seeing it! It was awesome!
I especially loved the whole 'bad-boy Peter' walking down the street thing. It was so funny to me cause the Doc said that it enhanced characteristics and it had totally enhanced Peter's dorkiness!

I couldn't help thinking... "Peter Parker just became Peter Petrelli!" when he sprouted the Emo Bangs of Power

There are different kinds of pumpkin bombs, guys. The more used one is the standard explosion, but the Green Goblin uses a disintegration one on the Oscorp board members in SM1. Harry survived the explosion in SM3 with a horribly scarred face. Spidey was able to not have a scratch because he has a strong suit on. Also, Venom refers to himself and Eddie, which is why he speaks in the plural, if I remember correctly.
The problem I have with saying Venom didn't have enough face time, or that none of the SM3 baddies did, is because the main villain in the movie is Peter's Venom-ego.
I also don't want to see Carnage: It'd just be a re-hash of Venom. I want to see Kraven or Hobgoblin.

But wasn't Hobgoblin the badguy in the first movie? Or am I just confuzzled?

Oh eff you all for so much blacked out text. Fine, I'll go to the dumb theatre right now.
Shiri2007-05-06 05:17:40
Better blacked out text than having the spoilers on the page. *peer*
Maybe I'll go check it out later.

I know there are different kinds.. but Peter just sort of stuck his hand out.. he had no real way of knowing what he was getting. Not to mention, Eddie mentions "don't wound what you can't kill." after he comes back and binds Peter. I think that might be an important line disguised as a throwaway. As a symbiotic pairing, its possible that when Venom regenerates from that little piece in the lab, that Eddie will come with him, either as two seperate entities, or a merged and 'true' (as in bigger and badder) Venom.
And I actually really liked that the Human Drama was the major element of the story. That's what Spider-man has always been about to me--the human element. Venom as Spider-man's Hyde was awesome, and so much deeper than the comic ever really made him in the beginning.
Also, I know a few people in the theatre didn't like the ending.. they thought it didn't make sense.. but I think it did. Peter's "I forgive you" wasn't just to Sandman, but to just about everyone. He forgave himself, he forgave MJ, he forgave Harry, he even forgave Eddie. Throughout the entire trilogy, Peter's guilt and anger has driven him to do 'horrible things' as he puts it, and he was finally able to let all of that go. That, in my opinion, is an awesome ending to the Spider-man Trilogy, its just deeper and more sublte than I think a lot of people wanted out of a would-be action smash-em-up.

And Noola, the first movie was the Green Goblin, and this one had the "New Goblin". Hobgoblin is different. He's a guy in a yellow and orange suit that began at odds with the Green Goblin, if I recall.

Ok so the movie just ended a few minutes ago but I need to monkey with the forum settings to see how to use the black text before I throw my two cents in.
Ok so I was annoyed by the amount of face time everyone got in the movie. And by that I mean literal face time. FFS they make Parker the most careless tool in the world when it comes to keeping the bloody mask on. Really? At the key to the city ceremony standing ON TOP OF A BUILDING IN BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH LOTS OF CAMERAS AROUND and you don't have your mask on? And Venom! I get that the actors need to have their faces on the screen but good lords. The Venom face is much better than Eric Foreman's, with or without the funky teeth.
Seriously though I thought it was great. I liked not having any explanation whatsoever for the symbiote to randomly show up. I thought it was cool when all the sudden Harry comes back on the screen all brooding and scarrified but otherwise healthy and much more sane. It was especially cool that Sandman is just some poor misunderstood man who didn't really want to kill anyone even though he was literally trying to beat the life out of a helpless person being held down by an accomplice.
Ok, that about wraps up the minor things I didn't like about it. Honestly they could have switched out the Spider-man suit for a clown costume and I wouldn't have cared since seeing Venom (and not Topher) is cool enough to cancel that out. I liked Ursula too.
The one thing that I want to be most upset about is the Emo-man stuff. I find that I can't be upset by it though because it was so damn ludicrously funny. I would put the thumbs up smiley here but the spoiler tags sort of freak out when I do.

Too many goblins!
And I agreed with your comments about Peter and the end of the movie completely.

I've got a question, in the comics, does the venom symbot pick up knwolege from its host?
I think the bad guys had way to much "narrator" knowledge. Good movie otherwise, and I'd expect more comments about emo hair from this group.

Yeah, the symbiote is telepathic, and doesn't actually have to be in contact with someone to begin to control them. It also controls its hosts in their sleep and during blackouts.
Also, in the comic, the Venom Symbiote is considered insane by its own kind and banished, because it actually sort of cares for its hosts. It wants to bond permantly with its host, rather than simply use them and kill them, and the other symbiotes don't want it to spread.
The Church scene is actually right out of the comics, except in the comic, the Symbiote actually drags Peter to safety after he falls unconscious from rejecting the symbiote. In various incarnations, the Venom Symbiote takes any chance it can to try and re-bond with its original host, Peter Parker.
Also, which would have been nifty to see in the movie, is that the Venom Symbiote has much more impressive morphing abilities, and can actually turn into ordinary clothing--and even firearms, if you consider the "What If.." stories as canonical in terms of powers.

The moment I saw him doing that I was like "oh god, it's me". The two guys I went to see it with actually both turned to me simultaneously and went "jesus, it's you".
I wonder why I'm spoiler-tagging this.
