Subj: Theater Stages!
Theaters in bard guilds now have official stages! You will be able to
put on elaborate performances to entertain the masses. Even better, you
can record your performances and play them back! This is a fairly
complex system so please see HELP THEATER. I'd like to give a shout out
to one of our behind-the-scenes mortal coders who is truly the
mastermind behind this awesome system. (He's shy so I won't tell you who
he is unless he wants to come out.)
In the future, recorded performances may be included as part of the
culture system, but for now please make use of this unique feature!
Penned by My hand on the 8th of Dioni, in the year 177 CE.
I won't quote the whole help file because its... huge.

17.9 THE THEATERS OF LUSTERNIA
Stages can be used to set up and perform productions, such as plays, concerts,
speeches, and ceremonies. A stage can have many productions associated with it.
Productions can be recorded for replay.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MANAGING STAGES
A stage associated with a guild can always be managed by its three main guild
leaders (guildmaster, guild administrator, and guild champion).
In addition, leaders can appoint others as Stage Managers. There are no limits
on who can be appointed as a Stage Manager, and there's no need to include the
leaders, since they will always be able to manage the stage anyway. Managing
the stage grants the ability to create and delete productions. To appoint
Stage Managers, use this command while standing at the stage:
STAGE MANAGERS ...
Each time you do this, it replaces the previous list. To add to the list, look
at STAGE STATUS first.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
GOING BACKSTAGE
Creating, setting up, managing, and performing productions is done from
backstage. Every stage has an associated backstage location. To get there,
use the command STAGE BACKSTAGE. This command is available to Stage
Managers as well as anyone associated with the current production, and
requires you to be at full health, mana, and ego. Using this to get out of
combat is forbidden. To return, use the command BACKSTAGE OFFSTAGE. (You
could also just walk back and forth between them, if they're accessible to
you.)

MANAGING PRODUCTIONS
From backstage, Stage Managers can use these commands to work with the list of
productions available:
BACKSTAGE LIST: Get a list of all productions associated with this stage. If
one is currently selected, it will be indicated with an asterisk (*).
BACKSTAGE CREATE: Create a new production. The title cannot be changed
later, so type carefully. The production will be selected for editing
automatically.
BACKSTAGE SELECT: Select a production for editing or performing. You
can also supply the production number instead of the title.
BACKSTAGE RESET: Resets the stage so that no production is selected for editing
or performing. It's a good idea to do this when you're done, to prevent an
inadverdent change in the production.
BACKSTAGE DELETE: Delete a production. You may not delete the one
currently selected, so you may have to BACKSTAGE RESET first. You will be
given a summary of the production and asked to AGREE to delete it. Deleted
productions are gone forever!
BACKSTAGE STATUS: Summarize the status of the current production.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
APPOINTING A DIRECTOR
Every production has a single Director, by default whoever created it. All
production setup commands can be used by Stage Managers or the production's
Director. A Stage Manager can appoint a Director by selecting the production
and using this command:

PRODUCTION ELEMENTS

Setting up a production is done by creating production elements of the
following types (more will be added later):
ROLE: A role associates a single actor (a player) with a particular role in a
performance. One actor may be associated with many roles in a production, but
a role can only be associated with a single actor. A role determines what the
actor will appear as during the production. For instance, in a play about the
fall of the Holy Celestine Empire, you might create a role named "Lolly", whose
full text was "Lolly Pringle", and associate it with the actor Nejii. When
this role was being performed, whatever Nejii said or did from backstage would
appear to the audience as if said or done by Lolly Pringle.
EFFECT: An effect is simply a way to describe some action or event happening
during the production. Only the Director or Managers can perform an effect.
CREW: This is similar to ROLE, but to record crew who helped with the
production in some way other than acting, such as designing costumes. The only
thing this does is allow the person backstage, and make them appear in the
program.
Elements are created with this command:
BACKSTAGE CREATE
is a unique name for the element. It will not be seen by the audience,
and is only used by the director or managers to edit and perform the element.
Every element in a production must be named uniquely (regardless of element
type). The details depend on the element type, as follows:
BACKSTAGE ROLE CREATE M|F
is the player who will perform the role. M|F determines the gender of
the role. It doesn't have to be the same as the gender of the actor.

acts.

If setting up a concert, speech, or other production that isn't a play, you
still need roles, but people might be depicting themselves. For instance, if
Nejii were putting on a poetry recital, you might create a role like this:
BACKSTAGE ROLE CREATE Nejii Nejii M Nejii Talnara
When this role was used, Nejii's recitation would be seen as being done by
"Nejii Talnara", not whatever his title is at the time.
BACKSTAGE EFFECT CREATE
can either be a specific colour (0-15), or instead, it can be the name
of a colour channel you can configure in CONFIG COLOUR, such as Says,
Deathsight, Things, Room_exits, etc. In the latter case, when the effect is
performed, each member of the audience will see it in whatever colour they use
for that channel or kind of item.
is the text that will be displayed.
For example:
BACKSTAGE EFFECT CREATE A1S1Q1 emotes With a shuddering creak, the door swings
shut.
BACKSTAGE CREW CREATE
For example:
BACKSTAGE CREW CREATE Costumes Estarra Costume Design
Directors and managers can edit effects with these commands:
BACKSTAGE LIST: Lists defined elements of the specified type.
BACKSTAGE SHOW : Show full details of an element.
BACKSTAGE DELETE : Irrevocably deletes an element. To edit it,
delete it and recreate it.

DIRECTOR PERFORMANCE COMMANDS
Once all the production elements are created, gather the actors backstage and
the audience before the stage. The director will use the following commands to
start, run, and finish the performance.
BACKSTAGE RUNTHROUGH: Starts the performance and opens the curtains, but do not
start recording.
BACKSTAGE RECORD: As RUNTHROUGH, but also starts a recording.
BACKSTAGE ROLE PERFORM: Used by the director to activate a role. The
associated actor needs to be present backstage. The director will generally
use this command on all the actors at the start of the performance, then again
only when an actor is assigned multiple roles and is switching between them.
All the actor commands won't be allowed until this is done.
BACKSTAGE EFFECT PERFORM: The director uses this to cause an effect to
be seen by the audience.
BACKSTAGE IMPROV : This is similar to performing an effect, but
lets the director make one up on the fly, to adapt to unusual events like
missed cues.
BACKSTAGE FINISH: The director uses this to conclude the performance and close
the curtains.
BACKSTAGE ABORT: Like FINISH, but displays a message about technical
difficulties instead of the curtains closing, and deletes the recording in
progress if there is one.
BACKSTAGE ERASE: Erases an existing recording. You'll need to do this before
you can start a new one.
BACKSTAGE TICKETPRICE: Set the price for a ticket for a replay. This
isn't per person, but per replay, for as many people as happen to be present.
75% of the ticket price goes to the director (who can then distribute it to

ACTOR PERFORMANCE COMMANDS
These are the commands actors will use during a performance. The director has
to use the BACKSTAGE ROLE PERFORM command first; this determines who people
will see performing these actions.
BACKSTAGE SAY: Used by an actor, only after the director has used the
BACKSTAGE ROLE PERFORM to activate their role. Whatever they say will be seen
by the audience (anyone in front of the stage) as if performed by the role.
For instance, if Nejii were to do: BACKSTAGE SAY We must get to Gloriana,
quickly! while performing the role Lolly Pringle, the audience would see:
Lolly Pringle says, "We must get to Gloriana, quickly!" in whatever colour they
usually see says.
Note: At this time, you can use emoticons with BACKSTAGE SAY. However, the
ability to SAY TO is not yet supported, nor are prefatory phrases
(e.g., "SAY (while juggling) Hi!"). These will be added later.
BACKSTAGE YELL, SING, and SHOUT: Alternatives to SAY. They'll appear like
you're yelling, singing, or shouting, but it'll still only be heard on the
stage and backstage.
BACKSTAGE AETHER : This command simulates
talking on an aetherwave, though again, while it may look like you're talking
to the whole guild or other organization, it's really being heard by the people
before the stage and backstage. can be GNT, GT, CT, or OT (and
this determines the colour the audience will see it in). For example, if
Nejii, in the role of Lolly Pringle, did this:
BACKSTAGE AETHER CT Ackleberry This doesn't look good.
then everyone would see something like this, in the color they use for city or
commune tells: (Ackleberry): Lolly Pringle says, "This doesn't look good."

text is supplied, it should take the form of an emote (e.g., "strides in with a
regal air"). If none is provided, a generic message will be used.
BACKSTAGE EMOTE: Like SAY, but used for emotes. EM can also be used in
place of EMOTE.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
PERFORMANCE REPLAY COMMANDS
After a performance has been recorded, use these commands in front of the stage
to watch a replay.
STAGE LIST: List available performances to replay.
STAGE START: Start replaying a recorded performance. If the
performance has a ticket price, it'll have to be paid, but only by the person
who starts the performance; everyone else present also gets to watch.
STAGE SPEEDUP/SLOWDOWN: Change the rate of the performance replay. Only the
ticketholder can do this.
STAGE PAUSE: Pause the replay, or if it's paused, resume it.
STAGE STOP: Abandons the replay. No refunds!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROGRAMS
The director can set up a program for the production using these commands.
(Note that ROLE and CREW production elements will automatically be used to
round out the program.)

playwright.

program.
