Speculation abounds on what the film is actually about but my hopes are high for a Lovecraft "Call of Cthulhu" adaption.

IMDB lists theories ranging from a "Lost" promo to Godzilla and Cthulhu. If nothing else, it's brilliant marketing.

WTF, there isn't a party in the Call of Cthullu. Hence this is irrelevant.

Yeah, god forbid they should take creative liberties and add things that weren't present in the original work. They never do that in any other film, eh?

I'm not familiar with Lovecraft, but that trailer looks so... COOL. And violent. The noise sounded like a vague female voice to me. Anyway, just hope it's not a flop with a cool trailer but crappy actual movie!

Well, one reason I dread the day someone will try to make a Call of Cthullu film (Except of course the excellent people at the HPLHS) is that they'll inevitably turn it into some idiotic monster movie where Great Cthullu goes on a rampage in Tokyo or New York. If Cloverfield is an "adaptation" of CoC, this confirms my fears.

Besides, the thing is launching missiles or red-hot homing meteors or something. Definitely not Cthullu.

I'm hoping that the electrical outage at the party is evidential of Cthulhu possessing the ability to interfere with electronics, and those missiles were just American ones that he's (He's?) setting off.

To be honest, I'm fairly ambivalent about the whole thing. I'd love to see an adaption of the story if done right. Creative liberties are well and good - if I wanted to see the same thing, I'd just re-read the story. But while the trailer is done well I can see it devolving into the kinda thing you described. Bastards.

I think the movie looks awesome. The whole thing being filmed as though it's from a camcorder is really neat.

mean ranything to anyone who knows anything about the Cthulu Mythos? Haven't been able to find anything, so I'm wondering if it's a wiki prank.

Cthullu rampaging through New York is just wrong. It would be basically a version of Godzilla with tentacles and only a passing resemblance to anything Lovecraft might've written. From the looks of the trailer, it's about something rampaging through a large city (Looks new-yorkish to me, but I dunno). Meaning, I don't want it to be cthullu. Since I hate giant monster movies, I don't think I'm going to enjoy this very much.


From here on the top of my considerable familiarity with what H P Lovecraft wrote, I can say it doesn't ring any bells. Then again, the Cthullu mythos involves scores of different authors, so it may be relevant to one of them; and at any rate, it sounds sort of Lovecraft-esque, and the IPU knows it's enough for hollywood.
