So who has seen this already? I just saw the midnight showing and thought it was pretty good. Definitely not the best film yet, although the movie itself was well done.
So what are your gripes? What did they change/leave out that really irked you?
Personally I thought the movie was pretty random and confusing even as someone who has read the book several times. I was never a huge fan of the actor they chose as Sirius, although he grew on me a little this movie, but in one of the later scenes I really wasn't too emotional over it.
Umbridge was PERFECT and Grop was really cute though!
All in all, I think they tried to include a bunch of things but they really didn't get it right in doing that. I would have preferred it to be a bit longer (it was only 2 hoursish) and for them to do a better job of explaining things rather than just throwing in as much as they could from the book. It didn't have as nice of a flow as the other movies.

No that's at the book release in a week
Shiri2007-07-11 09:50:53
Haven't gone yet! Will be going this weekend though I believe. Kinema in the woods doesn't do midnight showings AFAIK. (plus I wouldn't have woken up by then)

Going to see it tomorrow at 9AM with a (largely female) group of friends.
And the actor that plays Sirius is Gary Oldman and by God you'll admire him!

Going in a few days when I won't drown in a sea of people. I also get to be "That one guy who doesn't want to be there and complains loudly all night" in the line at the book store.
Arix2007-07-11 10:38:28
was Peeves in this one? I keep thinking of that one bit where one of the teachers tells him that the chandelier unscrews the other way

Just saw it then. It was alright, but I have no idea how anyone who hasn't read the books has any idea what's going by now. The movie did seem really jerky, with time slowing down and speeding up randomly. Basically all of Umbridge's crap happens in a 60-second montage right at the beginning, and then suddenly it's Christmas. Also, what happened to Grimmauld Place? It seemed like he only spent one night there, and his hearing was the next day. And no Mrs. Black! And no Firenze! *cry*
Imelda Staunton was fantastic, though. I really liked Helene Bonham Carter, too, actually - although I think that's just because I was really looking forward to Bellatrix.
The one thing that irked me was that the Stunning Spells were white. They're meant to be red. Up until now they've been quite good at not changing little things that don't matter, but then they go and stuff it up like this.

The funny part about that is that the game gets it right. Stupefy is red. Which is strange, since the game producers supposedly worked with the movie makers to create a nearly identical world.

Wow... The game gets it... right? That doesn't seem right... Ohh god! The world's gonna die!!!
-cough- Anyhow, I haven't seen the movie, but I REALLY want to. I think my mom's gonna take me some time soon, since it's a little tradition that we see the Harry Potter movies together... yes, I am young.

I just got home from seeing... so lame I mean yayness for some parts but the opening... gods they didn't even have the multiple letters or the concealment spell
Unknown2007-07-11 15:42:55
I Havn't seen it yet but everyone's complaints are exactly what I'm afraid of.
On a side note the 4th movie was a lot like this too. One of my favorite parts, the world cup, was cut down to three short scenes and had a whole lot missing in those scenes

I'll probably see it in a few months or so, or get a pirated copy. Harry Potter movies never do it for me anyways
The amount of fanservice bugs the hell outta me to, I mean in The Goblet of Fire, they spent more time on Daniel Radcliffe in the goddamned bath than on important parts of the story.

How the hell do the Sirius bits make sense if they cut most of Grimauld Place?
He just all of a sudden gets an urge to come running, even though we don't know he's been cooped up there forever?
Unknown2007-07-11 18:31:39
They cut out Grimauld Place!? Bah, and I bet they spend half an hour on Harry's pitiful romance attempts?

Whaaaaaat? From the brief time I spent playing the tutorial to the game, I'm amazed they got something right at all. Terrible, terrible game. After just seeing the initial scenes to the game, I think I'll be incredibly impressed with the movie.
Unknown2007-07-11 20:20:41
I'm seeing it tomorrow afternoon, and I damn hope they didn't mangle it and cut out half the plot so it doesn't make sense unless you've read the book again.
Noola2007-07-11 20:44:10
I just got back from seeing it, my boss let me take a 3 hour lunch so I could see it today.
I enjoyed it, but I bet folks who haven't read the book will be a little confused. Just like with the third movie, they left out bits that tied other bits together and explained things. I guess they figure that by now anyone who's going to see the movie has read the book and they don't need those details?
Things I Really Enjoyed:
Things That I Was Really Unhappy With:
And I never liked Gary Oldman as Sirius either. I don't think he was right for the part at all.
Still, I did enjoy the movie.

Things I Really Enjoyed:
Delores Umbridge's character was perfect. It couldn't have been done better if they geneticly enginered a person for the role.
I liked the way they worked Harry's dreams.
I loved the fireworks!
Luna Lovegood was perfect and so were the Thestrals. That was exactly how I pictured them looking!
I LOVED the battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort!
The dementor attack was cool and made up for the stupidity of Dudley.

Things That I Was Really Unhappy With:
No portable swamp!!
No Peeves at all!!
They showed the bit with Harry's Dad being an ass to Snape, but then never had Harry confronting Sirius and Remus about it and in fact, never brought it up again.
They didn't show Professor McGonagal getting attacked during the Astronomy test.
They didn't show Sirius singing Christmas Carols, I was looking forward to that.
They didn't show Sirius almost getting caught in the floo network by Umbridge.
They didn't have Harry's friends confront him about his fears about being possessed by Voldemort - and I was really looking forward to Ginny tearing into him about it.
They completely messed up the ending - having Harry learn the prophesy from the ball and not Dumbledore and Harry not having his emotional break-down and tearing up Dumbledore's office.
No brains attacking Ron.
Hermione not hurt at all.
The WRONG SPELL being used to knock Sirius into the archway!!!
No Peeves at all!!
