This Facebook group has grown by 200,000 people in under 5 days.

It's a group focused on spreading information on what is occuring in Burma right now, with the aim to change things for the better.

As of now, the regime has cut off all internet access to and from the country.

Unless you're living there, well, it could be worse.

I think this video would be tangentially relevant to the discussion.

Oddly enough, I'm less interested in the actual situation than I am to the overall indifference for what is happening.

I'm not saying that anyone actually discussing or learning about this would help, but rather I'm finding it interesting how it's a non-topic for most everyone.

While I like to see what's happening, my inherited and evolved cynicism, along with the actions of the Australian people, among others, that the government will do whatever the bloody hell it wants unless it's getting hammered in the polls within 6 months of an election. Why bother getting my hopes up that they'll throw off a long running regime? That's like expecting Verithrax to shave his unibrow. Impossible.

Hahahah!

I understand the cynical apathetic viewpoint, I really do.

I guess I'm feeling froggy and disruptive.

It's also hard to care about something that really doesn't affect you directly. A relative of one of hte dead, or a Myanmar-ian yourself?
Unknown2007-09-30 13:46:25
Neither of the two..

I'm just a interested spectator who is a bit amazed at the selective media coverage and the power of a totalitarian government.

I did not grow up in the 'Free Tibet!' times, so this is new and a bit startling.

Edited: And if I was a Mynamarian myself, I wouldn't be able to talk with you here, like this.. -That- is part of my amazement.

This one hits a bit close to home for me to really feel comfortable talking about on these forums... What happened is an outrage and I hope our border guards walk right across the river and nerf Thae Shae into the pit he crawled out of. I would love to see Thailand go to war with Burma to save our brothers in arms. I would sign up right now.

EDIT: But I can't really expect you all to know how bad it is in Burma or anything. I hope the US gets the UN to step in here. I'm sick of children having bombs strapped to the them trying to blow up my boder, really.

Actually, you would. They've clamped down net access, but it's spotty. And accessible in outlying areas. Not to mention that the government attempts to crack dow no n it normally were usually crude and easily circumvented.

I'm sorry..

You're quite right, I don't know the extent of the suffering, but I am hearing that it is worse by far than people imagine, from others who do have first hand experience.

I know I can't change anything personally, but I also know that numbers have a voice.
Simimi2007-10-01 10:51:37
This is how bad it is... There is a river that seperates Thailand and Burma. We have border guards on this border. If -anyone- steps into this river, they are shot. No questions asked.Men, Women, Children. Shot. Why? We are afraid that the children have bombs strapped to them, which is usually right. Why do we not invade Burma? We can't...

EDIT: Burmese and Thai culture and language are so similiar we might as well be the same people anyway...I will never call it Myanmar, it will be Burma forever. We did not fight a war of 1000 years against Myanmar, but Burma.

Bush had a press conferance about and has signed sanctions against them.

It is on the news everyday, I'm not sure what indifferences you are speaking of.

That's not really going to affect them much. China is their main trade partner anyway.

Which brings us back to Veri's post.

I ignore Verithrax' posts on principle, and continue to attempt to remember who he is in game so I can marry him to stangmar.
