Since elections seem to be riddled with the problem of alts invading and skewing the votes in a way that leaves people who are active and DO things for the city in a mess, I suggest the following changes be implemented:
- For voting, people have to be active for a week after coming back from dormancy before they can vote or contest. People go dormant after 30 days of inactivity
- Make voting be CR2+
it's easy to code in and it solves the problem of alts. I like a fair election, and quite honestly, when people log on and brag "I had a friend log onto 9 of his alts to vote for so-and-so" it really destroys the spirit of game elections. What does everyone think?

We do investigate reports of that kind of election abuse, and we have shrubbed people in the past for it (notably an election for a Celestian city cartel). There's really a way to game any election system we could code, and so it's probably not worth devoting resources to re-coding elections.
Overall, I think our system is pretty fair.

Yea, I issued myself about it, but they said there was minimal alt voting, which doesn't make any sense. Mag doesn't have 75 active citizens... so to me it seems obvious that over half those votes are just a vast number of alts who popped in to vote whether due to citizens telling their OOC friends to, or citizens themselves logging onto their alts. there are multiple ways of getting away with this too, either by logging onto a different computer, making sure you register under a different name, or what-have-you. I just personally feel that it destroys the system of fair play. *shrug*

Do we actually have a "system" for city elections? As far as city elections go anyone can vote I think, whether inactive or a fresh cr1. Yet in guild elections only the gr3's can vote, why? True enough all systems can be bypassed with hard enough work but what Revan suggested (but perhaps the week thing should be that plus some set hour span) sounds fair and easy enough. Currently the 'cheaters' have to do little to nothing to rig elections but if it took more effort perhaps they'd give up?
I'm really disgusted with what I heard people managed in the most recent Magnagora one... The more that it has been investigated and decided there were little to no alt votes cast whilst there are numerous witnesses to people bragging about pulling it off.

I honestly think that one person (regardless of how many characters they have and how well they RP) should be allowed only one vote in an election.

It's possible the people are not being entirely truthful about what exactly they did. There are usually a lot more people active in a city than any of us realize simply because we don't really interact with or see them all that much. In Celest's last election there were 91 votes for just one of the candidates. I certainly have no clue who most of those people are!
But it does seem to make more sense to have voters be restricted to CR 2. Not so much to prevent gaming of the system but people who are CR 1 generally haven't been around long enough to make an informed vote but there are probably enough of them to skew a vote. And they might not even keep playing so those who are dedicated players have to live with the results of their votes. A bit unfair.
I don't really agree with the activity part so much if there is a CR requirement in place.
Morgfyre2007-10-04 22:16:53
I believe there is already a playing time requirement and a level requirement to vote in city elections. It's not as if you can simply step out of the Portal of Fate and vote.

It's the people who come out of dormancy just to vote that are the problem 90% of the time though. Reactivating old alts in places with elections just to vote for friends, being convinced oocly just to show up and vote etc. Not only would the activity thing put a stop to that it also makes perfect sense. Someone who just showed up after months of being dormant cannot make an informed decision within a day, can they?
Jigan2007-10-04 22:38:15
They can make an informed decision if they take the time to hunt down all the information out there on the topics and have willing friends to boil it down for them.
This is why we needs a monarchy. No votes. Just the King sets and heir. After so many years, King is ousted (Usually by assassination according to fantasy stories) and the heir becomes kings. He sets new heir and proccess begins all over again.
(Not that I have any problems with Forren, eh-heh. He's a prefectly good Prince. Long live Forren. Please don't kill me?)

Doesn't really solve much - abusers can register many characters under different personal data.
Activity period would probably make cheating more difficult, but on the other hand it would harm those who have to take breaks from the game but are otherwise involved. Month is not a long time.
This is quite a difficult issue indeed - the tougher protection gets, the harder it becomes for the honest players. No wonder Morgfyre is reluctant about it.

I think this is a terrible idea. It sounds good on paper, and maybe it would work for most cases, but what about that person who just came back after being away for a few months and can't vote for something that will effect them in the game for who knows how long? Considering some elections come down to one vote it's a case that needs to be considered.
I don't know whether or not certain statements/accusations are true, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were around 75 separate people in Magnagora who voted. It sounds like a huge number, but there are people who play at times you may rarely see them or who log in every so often.
