I am thinking of making an alt or shifting Gabranth to a melee type guild as I am absolutely useless as mage (or so my research tells me). Which one is easier to use out of warrior or monk, without needing an incredibly complex system to make use of all the abilities (Which I would need to buy unfortunately). I've heard warrior has a huge lesson and artifact cost, but that doesn't stop reaching a decent level does it?

Either one can do well if you mean to focus on hunting. I really think warriors are the more difficult of the two to fight with, but monks have a much higher learning curve to figure out. I can help you with the different monk skills (at least, the ones I have) to get the hang of it if you decide to go that route. Warriors are pretty straightforward for hunting; combat is difficult until you get the hang of it.

Eh. If you can read battle spam and recognize patterns, warrior combat isn't bad at all.
Monks are definitely better bashers, though. If you're after levels, you want monk.

Unless you're not 70+, in which case monk natural damage is a LOT lower than other guilds. Nothing like having something shake off a world-shattering crit punch.

There There, It's just because monks start off so powerful.

That's what he was saying they don't do. They start off weaker due to not having lots of crits, then get really good.

Definitely go monk.. they are insanely good.. If i had not invested so much lessons into mage, id be monk. unfortunately, i have no money to spare now so.. im stuck for the moment.. but the rate in which they get circles is outstanding..

Stay a mage, trans telepathy, and learn how to use it. Telepathy is horrible. For the person on the receiving end. Just pick up Forren's little trick and force them to debate you.

I'd like to point out that of the people who have responded here saying monks are amazing, none of them have ever actually been monks. Of the people who are monks, we seem to agree that they're good at high levels, but pathetic at low levels. Even at high levels, it's annoying to get a world-shattering critical and watch whatever you're bashing survive.
I recently started playing a warrior, and they are actually quite a bit of fun. I can imagine it getting complicated, trying to figure out which limb to go for, deciding whether to use smites/bashes (for example), maneuvers, etc.. They are also not amazing at lower levels (better than warriors, though), but are also very good and much tankier than monks at higher levels.
Either one is a good choice. I agree with Yrael that telepathy can be dangerous, but I always sucked as a mage too so I decided to move. Some people just don't do well with that style.

Go monk, bash to demigod, switch to warrior, realise how fun and cathartic it is to apply large bits of metal to people, never change class again. I don't know how I stayed Nihilist. All I need to do now is engage someone, drop contagion, carcer, ectoplasm, and swing away. Half the time I don't even do the first four.

There are no monks who have made it to demigod yet (unless you count Nejii, who was a titan and made it the rest of the way as a monk). Warriors seem to do it every day - it's all the rage in the Ebonguard. What does that tell you?
Unknown2007-10-30 12:54:02
That none of the serious bashing-people have been monk long enough?
Gabranth2007-10-30 13:46:28
This is kinda oldish, but I don't like mage much and I want a change, although telepathy and phantasms are so awesome. If my plans work out I'm likely to go warrior, but I'm still thinking and I need alot of credits still.
Malarious2007-10-30 14:03:34
Ahem... XD I was just thinking of your name earlier Gabranth *as I play Final Fantasy XII*... was wondering if thats where your name came from! You know if you go Ur'Guard its almost required your title become Judge of the Empire

Warriors require a lot of credits. I would think as an Ur'guard you would need trans in your weapon spec, surge (near trans) in Athletics, whatever you can learn of necromancy (at least to putrefaction, more would be better), trans resilience to survive other warriors, trans magic to survive magic attacks without proofings and succumb, trans forging if you want full plate, etc.. Besides skills, you'll eventually want to spend a bare minimum of 150 credits each to rune your weapons, and even then you will fall behind without better runes. You also have a heavy up-front investment to buy two speed weapons, two precision weapons, good armor, and a good helm.
Shiri2007-10-30 14:19:38
Good chunks of that apply to every guild though. Everyone needs magic and resilience the same, warriors in fact less than everyone else due to armour, and they don't really need fullplate. So it's mainly just surge and trans weaponry skill that he'd need that he wouldn't as any other guild.

Trans magic is more important for them than others, though. From what I've experienced with my warrior, they take massive amounts of damage from magic, and something like succumb basically guarantees that they are dead. They need resilience, but only really against other warriors. Their armor and health make them okay against everything else I guess. The real expense is for the good weapons/armor/runes/etc..

I'm not trying to be combative but playing the 'your not monk so your not qualified to to comment aobut us' card is a little lame.I see things and notice trends. And you never know -- nezha might have some monk alt out there.. who knows..
I dunno why people like to tell the rest of the basin that monks are just so-so but.. for me the monk skillset and concept is wonderful.. i dunno why people dont see that and instead focus on some little negative thing like:
>> Even at high levels, it's annoying to get a world-shattering critical and watch whatever you're bashing survive.
monks are all about speed if im not mistaken.. there are no 'monk makes a violent assault' attacks.. also, and so you want a one hit instakills against denizens? i hunt with monks all the time and let me tell you - if im offered to trade my 4-5sec 800-1000'ish damage staff for a multiple hitting low damage staff with lot of criticals.. ill jump in the chance.. im at circle 77 with karmic blessings all the time and i still cant take two adoraths like some monks of the same level i know..
well thats my two cents.. if monks want to put down their own skills, fine with me.. but i see and notice things.. i dont need to experience a thing to form valid conclusions..
peace

The point is these people have been mages and wiccans before and are used to getting kills on top-level astral mobs with lowly oblits. That's why getting wscs and watching them live (and tank another 7 hits, btw, and I'm a demigod) is a bit annoying.

What race are you? Some of the more popular warrior races have some pretty nasty vulnarabilities to one type or another of magic-style attacks, after all.
