Joy!
I think Jackson splitting The Hobbit into two films is odd, but I won't argue. As impressed as I was with LOTR, I certainly will give him the benefit of the doubt in however he approaches this project.

Sweet!
And I like it split. In fact, I wish directors would split up longer books more often when making movies so that more of the plot can be included.

Oooh, I'm excited. I LOVE The Hobbit
Everiine2007-12-18 21:49:57
I didn't know there was that much of the Hobbit, to spit it into two movies. But if that means more and truer book content, I'm all for it!

Those dwarves -were- locked in the elves' dungeon for a long time. How much do we -really- know about what went on there?
Daganev2007-12-18 22:05:42
yay... *snore* two years! assuming the writers strike is over by then
I hope two movies == more dwarf antics.

I'm assuming the first movie would end when Bilbo finds the ring, and the second half of the movie will lead up to the battle with Smaug (and subsuqent fallout). It seems as though there's not much action in the first part, and not much development in the second. However, like I said, I trust Jackson will figure it out and wow us, as always (hmm, now there's some high expectations!).
EDIT: Was I the only one hugely disappointed that LOTR didn't end with the scouring of the shire? I wish he'd make that into a standalone movie!

I think the battle of five armies will be a very interesting part of it, though im not sure how the first part could be done to attract non-LOTR fans

Nope.

Looks interesting, I've got high hopes.
Yea, me too

When I saw Frodo's vision in Galadriel's pool of the shire burning, I thought HOLY SMOKES, THEY'RE GOING TO DO THE SCOURING OF THE SHIRE!! I was soooo happy until Saruman died and my hopes were dashed...
Druken2007-12-18 22:55:27
I feel so lame for not having read the books. I loved the movies, but I just cannot get into the novels.
Was the scouring as scary as it sounds?

Maybe not, cause it's a bit of a stretch - but maybe they'll work it into one of the Hobbit movies somehow?

Well, it wasn't scary but it was a hobbit lover's wetdream... our intrepid furry footed heros return to find Saruman and his henchmen have taken over the Shire. Using all their well earned courage and newly honed fighting skills, they put the smackdown on the interlopers. It was a nice closing of the circle to show how the hobbits had grown from the naive, mostly harmless, loveable and somewhat bumbling homebodies to the sword wielding adventurers as seen through the awed eyes of other hobbits.
Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it!

I've read the books and actually didn't feel like I gained that much from it. Tolkien made a very immersive world with a great archetypical story...but he's a mediocre writer. I think the movies could have been better if they included more of Tolkien's story and world, but the movies lost nothing (and benefitted loads) by using its own language and pacing.

Ooh! Sounds epic! And that would have been an awesome scene to watch.

It would have.
Though that was half of the last book! (Almost)

Ah, the redemption of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins!

Oh, wow. Then epic was definitely the right word for a myriad of, albeit stretched beyond poetics, reasons!

I guess so! The last half of a book should probably be more than a scene. I didn't realize it was such a LONG scouring.

Get out of this thread, infidel.
