Harr. First.
As Estarra requested, this could be the thread to discuss our own Racial Revamp.
Now, maybe, to move a bit away from the "one set of stats for every race", Lusty could, for example, add something called "upbringing".
Like, say, Faeling have default stats of
Strength : 7 Dexterity : 18 Constitution : 9
Intelligence : 15 Size : 5 Charisma : 16
Now, if we factor in uprbringing, we could have
Harsh upbringing (+1 to cutting resist, +1 to blunt resist, +1 to STR, -2 to cha, -1 to int)
Educated upbringing (-1 to STR, -1 to Dex, +2 to int)
Normal upbringing (no difference)
And there could be special upbringings for races. Like for Lobos
Brought up in the Tosha Monastery (get a special greeting there, +1 to dex, +1 to bal, -2 to int, -2 to str)
Or something like that.

Races are nice and all but did anyone else catch that havens thing?? Level 100's build their own pads using experience!
That would solve our "essence means nothing" problem

I think Richter would decapitate the admins after spending so much on Deepnight especially if bashing to Demi would result in roughly the same thing.

Eh, not so keen on the special upbringings for races. Especially with the whole family thing that goes on, it's sorta weird to go with that.

Don't know about the stat packs idea, but I love getting different racial skills. Trill only got the flying thing going on (no one seriously hunts/fights in the air...), but so do like 25% of the rest of the non-trill population

Well, hm. True to that, but on the other hand, families technically are formed of people who found themselves after the portal with no memories. Like, they can't remember if they really were their family and all. And characters that were made especially for a RP'ed baby, they could choose according to RP.

Maybe we should get one of the two threads locked so that all ideas get posted in one place?

This is what I'm thinking.
We have our races. Keep the base stat differences between the races small. Just enough to indicate tendencies, and give them base mandatory characteristics.
Then a set of qualifiers available to every race. You pick one. Studious, hardy, agile... whatever.
Then, a number of conditions unique to each race. The style of these could vary significantly, from cultural (Shanthine Aslaran, Imperial Merian) to phenotype (Pureblood Human, Elfblood Human, Shadow Faeling, Scaled Viscanti, Drone Kephera).
Pick a race. This sets your race noun, and ensures you have the base traits deemed mandatorily representative of a race. Abilities such as flying, or waterbreathing, or weakness to fire.
Pick a qualifier. This sets the 'is a (qualifier) (race), and provides most of the stat/eq/balance adjustment.
Pick a condition. This last part is either added to the description, or dropped and left up to the player to describe. Conditions give the little bit extra on top of the qualifiers to push an extreme or soften edges. Also can give additional race-based abilities, reduce or increase the existing ones. Example, a Deep Merian might have more constitution, less intelligence, more cold resistance, more fire and electricity susceptibility. An Island Merian might have more intelligence, reduction of fire susceptibility, increase eq. Except we'd use conditions that fit better into existing Lusternia story.
You could wind up with 'He is a muscular merian lord and' or 'He is an agile honeysap tae'dae and' or 'He is a studious pureblood human and'... so on.

I thought about something like that before but thought it's not gonna fly because it's too hard to balance.
But now that others are actually getting it, I fell it's a must have for Lusternia.
That's all from me for now.

I wouldn't want to get too crazy with modifiers, I think the one thing to remember is that it has to be simple to switch races with a cameo.
Though if we have say, 10 basic body types, those could become thier own name modifiers to a race.
So if you pick the "heavy hitter" body type, you migth became a Rockholm Dwarf, or an Shadowlord Faeling, or a ShockTroop Krokani, or a Mauler Tae'dae etc. But if you pick the "bookworm" body type you'll be a , SouthGard , Dwarf, or a Shadowcaster faeling, or a Blind Krokani, or a NotGoingToHappen Tae'dae.

Mages (Aquamancy or Geomancy), Druids (Druidism), Guardians (Nihilism and Celestialism), and Wiccans (Wicca) all share their primary skill's attribute (namely, Mysticism). The mage secondary Illusions is from the Intellect pool, while Wiccans, Druids, Guardians, and some warriors choose the Arcana-related skills Totems or Rituals. Best not to assign stats and racials to lesson pools, since some won't get used no matter what you label them.
Not sure how to handle racials if we go through with it. Most of them are strengths/weaknesses vs a certain damage type.

Its not being assigned to lesson pools, just using the same names to make it more Lusternian.
Every character takes lessons from every lesson pool, but there are obviously going to be some collection of stats which are better for one archetype over another. Except in this case, we will make sure there are two equally well suited collection of stats for each archetype.
edit:
The idea is to seperate combat from races, so you can pick a race thats best suited to your RP, and a Statpool that is best suited to your archetype.
One thing we can add is say the level 25 ability of a faeling is to cheapen the cost of certain skills. Like maybe Powercost of Night and Crow skills is reduced by 10% for faeling, Moon and Stag for elfen, Sacrements for Merian, Necromancy for Viscanti. That basically just makes all power skills in those particular skillsets that cost more than 6 to be 1 less than before.

Ah, wasn't quite sure what you were trying to do by naming them that. Still, some pools are undoubtedly used less than others, while others are used (sometimes twice in guild skills) by several archetypes.

Provided we're copying Aetolia with the 1/25/50/75 racials. We could just go 1/50 like we always have to keep the Lusternian feel, with the more useful ones given at level 1 and the stronger/flavor racials at level 50. We could even keep the racial spec idea and do something with that, so it's worth it to be an Imperial Merian or Shadowlord Faeling or whatever.

25 was just a random number. At this point, I don't think harping over mechanical details is such a good idea.
Ashai2007-12-19 23:07:54
Except that lusternia already has races with special skills at level 50, so that's not an entirely aetolian idea, but it would be to have bonuses every 25 levels. I don't think it would deviate too much from lusternia's present state to make racial powers, fire breath, mind sense, hives, etc, to be more balanced/regular
Daganev2007-12-19 23:20:10
Oooh, how about this. Upon creation you pick a race, upon joining a guild you can pick a new Statpool for some basic cost.
This way the Cameo still only changes race, and the Statpools can be more easily balanced.
edit: Nevermind, there are some issues with that, namely things like INfluencing, Charisma and size stats.
