Some thoughts:

Graze (Novice)
Syntax: ORDER GRAZE
Allow your loyal companion to spend some time grazing in a
valley, forest, or grassland to replenish its strength. This will
effectively increase the duration of your mounts feedbag.

Would help those of us who occasionally don't sign in for extended periods of time.

Tether (Adept)
Requires: 2 Rope
Syntax: TETHER
UNTIE
Tethering a mount to a stable object will prevent it from
wandering off. Your mount will still be able to graze while
tethered and prevent it from returning to your inventory
until untied.

In order to tether your mount, you'd need to be in a general environment in which you might find something to tie your mount to, such as a forest or city street with a lamp post or something.

RidingTack (Capable)
Syntax: PREPARE TACK FOR
BRACE
Requires: leather 10
Creating a riding tack for your mount will increase your ability to
stay mounted when attacked. Bracing yourself in the stirrups will
also increase this chance, but will slightly lower your ability to
avoid incoming attacks.

While Bracing, you'd basically exchange roughly the % chance of you avoiding an attack because of Defence (early in Riding) for the equal to/lesser/greater than % chance of staying mounted. I don't know what the % is, but I'd call it a fair trade because being unsaddled is a bigger inconvenience than getting hit by an extra attack.

Stablity (Gifted)
You are now so skilled that you no longer require reins to guide
your mount or stay in the saddle. By using your legs to tightly grip
your mount's torso, you are able to steer him by applying
pressure with your knees. As your skill in Riding increases, your
chance at staying saddled when attacked becomes much greater.

The first part is just flavor. Stability (Gifted) grants an extra (5-10)% chance to say mounted, and each skillrank after that adds an additional (5-10)%. The percents are suggested ranges, since I have no clue what the actual chance is.

I don't see why no one has said anything to this. I think all three of them are, at the very least, decent ideas.
Ixchilgal2008-03-01 14:38:48
I agree with any idea that makes it less likely to fall off my mount every single attack ever conceived.
Bashara2008-03-01 21:20:47
Bump.

Also, does anyone know if you can still use Charge from Athletics while mounted? If not, I was thinking about something to the tune of a Ride-by Attack, delivering a single physical attack along the path of a charge with an added chance of knocking the target down.

You can't.

SUPERVAULT:

Syntax: SUPERVAULT

The quick speed at which you can mount your faithful steed is legendary. You will no longer consume balance upon vaulting onto your mount. However, you will need to be standing and on balance to do so.

Ride-by Attack
Syntax: RIDEBY
Damage: 75% weapon, 25% blunt

Using the superior mobility of your mount, you may
execute ride-by attacks. As long as your target is
within sight, you will charge in a straight line until
blocked. In addition to your attack, your mount will
attempt to ram the target, dealing damage and
knocking them down. If the direction you are charging
is being blocked by an enemy, your mount will
automatically attempt to continue moving, making an
impact attack (100% blunt) against the enemy blocking.
If successful, you will continue moving; if not, your
charge will automatically stop.

Ride-by attacks will only be executed with physical weapons. Deciding factors in the checks to knock down the ride-by target or to move past blocking opponents are size, weight, and level of mount. A pony probably won't allow you to barge through an orclach, but a mammoth might wink.gif

This actually makes me want to put lessons into riding now. Yes please.

Today in Lusternian news!

Another ride by on the roads today. The victim was not seriously hurt though heartily shaken. Witnesses are unable to tell who it was, but it is likely the griefers society.

For Lusternian News tonight, I am getting the censor.gif out of here.

It seems mount jump was nerfed , you fall off it now.
Unknown2008-03-16 23:51:53
I like the idea, one has to wonder if the size of the mount would affect the damage. Great, there goes the price of a mammoth tongue.gif
Dysolis2008-03-17 01:42:48
You fall off the mount if attacked anyway, it's a useless skill now.
Unknown2008-03-17 03:06:50
Sorry for using Bashara's thread. Here's a Yoshi inspired defense:

Sacrificial Leap
Syntax: LEAPING

Using your superior riding skills and reflexes, leap in mid-air from your mount as you are falling into a pit or from a high altitude to safe ground. This will kill your mount.

Bump and bump. These are all awesome ideas.

Honestly, Riding needs to be completely reworked, and a long time ago I think admins were planning on doing just that.

You do not fall off when you mountjump

Wow, I had completely abandoned this thread. However, after recently reviewing my Riding skills, I have to say that I hope this thread has gone SOME Admin attention and thought.

HERE'S HOPING!!!

I started a riding thread way back with Saran. There were some really good ideas for changes in there too. I'm too lazy to get you the link, but if you go to my profile, it'll list all the topics I've started and the riding one should be there.
