I recently had a very bad experience with Speakeasy, my DSL provider at home. They had been a good company, but this was really bad service and I sort of expect it to become more like this since Best Buy bought them. Therefore I need a new DSL provider. Please tell me what DSL providers you recommend. (If you know they don't do business in northeast Ohio then they won't work for me.) I was thinking DSL Extreme, so if you have any advice on them then please do share.
Thanks!
Thanks!

If Verizon FiOS is out there, it's incredibly good.

Can't run a server on FiOS.

Just switch to Armstrong, I am sure it is NE Ohio too, since I can't be more than 1-1.5 hours away from you. Hmmm damn I got DSL upstairs as well. I think it is Alltell or Altell or something like that for DSL, which should work in NE Ohio tool.

Can't. They block ports to make you buy the expensive business plan.

I haven't had a problem with people connecting to my computer for various things. I can't remember if we were still on Comcast when I had my Apache server running though.

I'm surprised to hear this about both Speakeasy and Best Buy. Scott Kurtz (pvponline.com) always had great things to say about Speakeasy, as far as I can remember. And, I personally love Best Buy to no end, as the support I get from them is just unbelievably awesome.

I'm still on hamster wheel.

I need an ISP that doesn't block ports.
I always had good things to say about Speakeasy as well. They catered to nerds like me. It is pricier than the competition, and the only reason I stayed was because their tech support was very tech knowledgeable. Here's what happened, though. They convert my wife's webmail to some new system that didn't work for us once before. But this time we are forced to use it. It breaks again. It's obvious (to a coder) that it is having an untrapped exception. So the on-line tech guy suggests changing the interface view rather than forwarding it to the IT department post haste. After I respond with evidence that the idea didn't work, 24 hours go by with no response since he doesn't work on Saturdays and they don't appear to have a round-robin system to send open support tickets to other employees when the primary is out of the office. So I call them up and the guy on the phone says he wants my password, which is a big security no-no. He finally send it to the IT department for investigation. After several days, the IT department says that logging in works just fine. So he sends it back telling them that logging in was never the problem. After a week and a half from when I first opened the ticket, all the while my wife can't send e-mail, they finally say that I need to set the time zone preference and that solves the crash. My assumption is when they converted us to the new system that somehow a null got stored in the database record for that field, and their send mail code didn't have null checks for it. I then file a complaint about not being able to send e-mail for a week and a half, and it gets ignored. I'd stay with them if they offered some apology in the form of a discounted or free month of service. But they don't even offer a verbal apology for the crew up.
And yes, I voted, but a while ago absentee. Every issue went the opposite how I voted and my candidate lost. Though I expected that anyway. It's how most elections go for me.

I'm starting to lean towards AT&T Yahoo DSL... Anyone know if they block ports, and if so, if there are plans that don't block ports? They are not entirely clear about it in the web site promotional material.
Xavius2008-03-06 01:01:47
Google is saying 25, 1025, and 33033 (that's a new one--what runs there?). I can't find an official list from the company. At minimum, 25 can be unblocked with a business plan, but no word on the other two.
