So we were discussing figurines and why they ultimately failed as a gold sink, and in my opinion it was because they added too much crap to them instead of keeping it simple. So what I am doing now is trying to get ideas for maybe making them fun again. Also, if anyone has a list of all the stuff that can be done to figurines like minimeals and such, please post it.
Krellan2008-04-09 04:57:02
I had an idea to make them popular again, but it didn't get much response at all. it's in my profile anyways you can just find the topic if you wanna read it.
Arix2008-04-09 05:00:24
If figurines weren't so needlessly complicated, I could see that idea happening
Unknown2008-04-09 11:49:26
It's not even that they're complicated because I found that to be part of the fun. You get to track down a cool creature to model your figurine after and then outfit it with some spiffy gear. The only problem I've ever had with the figurines is the fact that they don't last long at all. You go to the trouble of preparing your very own special little toy only to watch it be destroyed in about a year's time.

When they win fights they gain decay time.

Yeah... but really, they should be a longer lasting thing period just so that people who have one feel more like using it. I know I'm not likely to go make something with a short decay time in the hope that I can find enough people who also did the same thing to raise it up (at their expense). If, on the other hand, it was intended to be a long-lasting figuring (a real-life year base)..? I expect more people would commission one, at least. I don't know if they'd actually be used more, but people do generally like to use their NeatItems™.

But if we made a competition out of it! just maybe.

I really don't see competitions catching on unless people actually have some desire to build the things (for whatever reason).
Rakor2008-04-09 19:51:01
Idea: there could be some sort of award system where they gain medals after killing enough figurines.
Xavius2008-04-09 19:57:56
A figurine that wins enough metals in officially sanctioned competitions could be used to power a colossus, removing the need for an enchanted/alchemic heart and boosting the overall strength of the colossus.

When I heard about figurines, I thought what you were supposed to do was build 5 or 10 of the same creature, and then have them fight eachother until you get a big strong one.
But that seems like a waste to me.
I never liked the idea that the figurines go poof if they lose. I'd rather that they just gain if they win, and possibly lose the latest bonus they gained.

They should just start with lives, like 3 or something. Each time you lose, a life is lost. Get to 0 and it goes poof. You can then buy extra lives with credits (50?). Each player would be able to have one figurine (because they do not auto decay). You could then buy extra figurine slots for credits (again something like 50?).

50 credits for a figuring life? Uh... well, nobody's really going to be doing that, either. Maybe if it was something like 10,000 gold per life.

Ok change the life cost to gold. Probably need to keep the extra slot cost in credits though to match with similar things (like clan slots and permanent items).
Perhaps instead of instantly poofing if it got to 0 lives you could instead place a short (2 month?) decay timer on it to allow someone to go raise the cash to save it.
Winning could also gain you a life point up to a max of something, perhaps 5?
You would check lives by probing.
Just a thought.

I usually place mine in a stockroom, and take them out when I want to battle them.
Love Figurines. The only problem I have, is that some, when created, should show what they are in the name. For instance, I have one of Makfir, Lord Fain's Direwolf. However, it is not NAMED Makfir, but something about "a black direwolf". Or, Lord Raezon's Archangel isn't called "Cassana" when made, it just goes by "Archangel". Though, Ironbeard shows his name, not A dwarf", luckily.
Just ticks me off .
PS. If anyone has one of Jolly Pringle (Teh solstice elf guy) or any of the gnomes , I will buy it. For a decent sum.

Hm, maybe you didn't read my topic. But I figured the rewards of the competition would be more than enough incentive to build these.

there's the link, it's fairly long. Maybe a bit rambling.

I did read it-- it looks overly complicated, really, and I'm not sure it'd get enough people interested in figurines (without a revamp to the figurine system, such as actually making them last a while) to be worth the coding.
Krellan2008-04-10 01:45:12
Yeah but I still wanna see it happen. I mean, it just starts to feel like so many things that we had before are just becoming more and more unused. Prime raiding is pretty much gone, Ethereal raiding is gone. Even elemental raiding is gone just by using Flux. Wildnodes is always between Celest/Mag so it's gone for the communes. Nexus raiding is gone (correct me if I'm wrong about that). Aetherspace is still pretty gone since all they did to flashpoints was nerf them in a sense. i don't really have a great understanding of it other than that general it's not as easy to use, but still, with the limited conflict and the unbelievable utility of Commander specs, there's nothing there. Figurines started well and are gone.
I mean, we could even have competitions out of chess tournaments or bombard! ones. We introduce all of these new things and they're a small time fad before the next new thing replaces it or it just dies off on its own.

I agree, but recently, I became a huge figurine fanatic.
I have around 20 or so. Fun to put them all into a ring in a manse somewhere and watch them go at it.
