Give teachers karma

Proposed idea: if you're a teacher in your collegium, and a novice in your guild is learning from you, you should get a little bit of karma whenever they learn from you. About ¼% per 15 lessons, so a typical novice going through a novice intro and spending all their lessons gets you about 5% karma.

Justification: encourages teachers to teach; encourages people to become teachers; encourages people to teach novices instead of dumping them on NPCs; makes sense that you're gaining karmic benefit from helping the young.

Problem: would someone have a novice keep learning and forgetting lessons over and over? Maybe. They can gain karma a lot faster other ways (e.g., gathering pixies) though, so would this be a real problem? If so, maybe put a cap on it: you can't gain more than 10% in a single hour this way.

I'm sure encouraging novices to chain forget their lessons in any way would cause instant shrubbing. This idea is awesome, Lendren.

Approve of this idea. It also encourages more interaction, which couldn't hurt it any way. smile.gif

I can gain 50ish percent per hour of bashing while maintaining 3 blessings. I think you are setting the limit too low. As novices are the life blood of the game I think doing things to encourage spending time with them are great. I would suggest a 1% gain or more per 15 taught. Heck I would even support giving the teacher esteem which they could then turn into karma or gold as they chose. It makes perfect sense too, teaching is a form of influencing.

It is not a necro when it is a good idea!

I understand that the teacher receives some small amount of lessons for teaching, but I really see no downside with giving the teachers karma as well. Novices are the lifeblood off the game, I think putting in more rewards to spend time with them is a good thing.

I think this is a fantastic idea, I hate people say 'go learn at '. It's important, ESPECIALLY for new players, to learn that muds are very interactive, and it's a lot easier to learn if they have someone they can ask questions to

This idea has the Veyda seal of approval.

Anyone forget about the super awsome bonus you already get for teaching novices?
Lendren2008-06-24 17:34:37
I didn't realize that it was so long ago I proposed this, I thought it was more recent.

The only 'super awesome bonus' I know of is an eensy-teensy-weensy bit of learning in the skill yourself if you're not trans, and anyone gets that teaching anyone; this is intended to be for collegium teachers teaching their own guild's novices only.

I sometimes wonder why I even bother to write posts.

What about Undersecs?
Lendren2008-06-24 18:28:28
I would say if those undersecretaries are meant to be teaching novices officially, then they should be flagged as collegium teachers. Personally, I have all my undersecretaries as teachers. But if some guild is out there where they've defined "undersecretary" to have other meanings than teachers, good on them -- the ones who are meant to be the guild's official teachers will be set as collegium teacher (and thus would get this), the others wouldn't be primarily teachers (and thus wouldn't), and it's still all good. Since this is proposed as a collegium thing, I don't see a problem linking it to collegium flags.
Unknown2008-06-24 18:47:36
why not take it away from collegium teachers and give it to all sects/undersects?
Lendren2008-06-24 18:51:41
krin, you're a post behind, I just answered that right above you.
