I know this has been brought up somewhere before, but I feel it would be really neat to get all commodities used, not just the metal back, when you smelt a weapon or piece of armor.
Because of the nature of forging, anything worth using has to be remade. Over and over, so it's just not really remotely practical to use anything other than an all metal design. This means that all those great designs that contain non-metal components just sit unused, which is a shame. It also means that any time anyone sits down to make something new for forging, they wind up limited in what they can do creatively, because everything has to be made from metal.
I know it doesn't make a lot of practical sense, but I don't see how it could really hurt! It could only increase the variety of weapons being used, and give people more options to style themselves according to their tastes. This seems like a good thing to me!

Seconded!

I'll accept that when Tailoring comms are returned 100% when shearing.

Forgers in Lusternia are spoiled enough as is given the fact that they get all the metal comms back. In Achaea, you only get half of the metal comms back and none of the others, while in Imperian, you get half of all comms back, on top of the ingot business.
Nice, but not needed.

Above information corrected.
I am personally fine with the Lusternia way of smelting. I mean logically thinking, if you place a piece of cloth into a damn hot fire, it's hardly going to come back out of it as cloth. The only thing that annoyed me was the fact that gemstones were not returned on smelting. That makes no sense whatsoever, specially considering that Jewellers can melt jewelry down to all gems and metals (I never tried jewellery which had other comms, I assume one gets them back).
Oh, since we're on this... allow unstitching of crafted armour/items! UNSTITCH LEATHER VEST. yes yes yes.
Either way, this will not make forging more useful or more viable as a real trade skill. It's more a utility skills, or as someone put it to me today, a public service skill.

Yeah, a diamond would survive a paltry forging fire.

At least you get something back!

Jewelers can get comms back can't they when destroying things? I was pretty sure that there was an all metal brooch pattern that you could "smelt" in a sense (whatever the jeweler term is for it) that would get you the comms back to remake the brooch?
As for warriors, I think it is fine. People just need to use the all metal patterns available to them. Hell I am on my 10443rd forge as we speak and I would never ever ever in a million years have chosen a non all metal pattern for this.
The other thing is if you don't like the all metal patterns available to you. For 50 credits (i think) you can customize it when you get the stats you need on the weapon, bypassing the ugly look of the weapon itself.
And Akui, Silverblade has some nice all metal patterns but if ya need me to put you in another clan where Shinza made a few all metal patterns msg me IG about it, I will put you in a clan full of lighties who I should just remove anyways, cuz they do nuttin but make weapons to try and kill non lighties with

I have all metal stuff I like, but thank you!
It's more that there are some stuff with non metal parts that I think looks nice, but it's just not practical because of the whole deal with warrior weapons. That and, when I'm feeling creative and go to design a weapon, I feel like I need to stick to all metal parts, which can be a little restrictive.
Though, I do like cartels, if only because sometimes I'll get an idea for something I think is pretty neat, but wouldn't really be appropriate for a seren-themed cartel.

Isn't this the point? Forging is so random that no one ever uses non-metal patterns because they can't be reforged. At least from where I am (as a non-combatant) it seems like weapons are really impotant. Thats why you are on your 10443rd forging - because you need a good weapon. If their stats are that important and that hard to achieve, it makes sense that non-reforgeable patterns never get used.
Eh, I approve of this.

AYe, which is also why when people bitch about how they could get such and such weapon cheaper, and all that other jazz... I would like them to do it themselves.
- This week you've played a total of 4 days, 5 hours and 13 minutes.
- On 10544th forge now
If forgers got together, we could actually make it so we controlled if high end weapons ended up in the hands of non forgers. But there will always be someone to try and undercut it. Thats just how this place is. Black Anvil Cartel had a good setup at the beginning, except no one ever followed the rules to it. If I can get a hold of Shinza I would get the Tharedian back on track like that as well. But it is probably already too late. -shrug-
edit - finally after 10642 forges I got a feasable waraxe... can't list the stats though because the person who wanted it is going to have to suffer a little before he gets them. For putting me through all that forging ^^
Ixion2008-05-03 15:13:22
I just forged one with amazing stats Ild the base of which you were drooling over when we talked last.. in 5 forges at work..
Combined we're at about 20,000 forges. Only 20k forges.... If I see the forge for about 2RL years ima go insane.

Damn you now I have to log in to see.

Yanno what I do when people ask me to forge them something, then want better stats or want it cheaper, I go, f@Sk you, go do it yourself, and ignore them.
