So, after re-reading the histories, I noticed that Magnagora doesn't have a native race associated with it pre-Taint. Celest has the merians, Halifax has the lucidians/trill and Gaudiguch has the dracnari, but absolutely no mention of a Magnagoran race until the Viscanti. It makes sense in a way...after all, a race of mole people wouldn't be particularly exciting, but still.

So, that naturally begs the question of what makes it different from the remainder of civilization? Is there an established story for it, or just speculation? Should I just stop asking questions and wait to see what happens?

Magnagora was the first "modern city"

it was a mixture of all the races, it was cosmopolitan and took in all the people who didn't want to be in the other places.

Makes sense. The Viscanti are so diverse that the only explanation is that Magnagora contained many races, pre-Taint. And from metropolis --> necropolis.

I always just assumed that Necropolis was used just because it meant city of the dead, I never really thought it was meant to make any connections to metropolis.
