I was thinking, why aren't shields set to only be able to be wielded by guild/strength?
I mean, if I was a bard, say a faeling, I can still wield a 300 lb. greatshield, and do a backflip/handstand?
Headed to work, be back in 8.5 hours, discuss plz. RP wise, these things have got to be changed. PLUS, I want to see more designs for other types of shields.

Because there isn't any particular need to nerf bards, wiccans, druids, mages and/or guardians in this way?
If you want to get envoys to have shields all functionally the same, sure, but it seems like you'd complain about that too.

This just sounds kind of anal to me. Sometimes, mechanics > roleplay.
Shiri2008-06-02 12:43:33
Oh yeah, and on the same subject, I bet you wouldn't want to only be able to carry a single 75kg merian back and forth to Gognigin (without equipment) for the exact same reasons you want shields changed.

You just didn't like me parrying your attacks

Fixed.
Also, no sane shield has a weight of 300 pounds. In reality, even the mightiest tower shields would be much lighter. I have no idea why they're so friggin' heavy in game, but I'm sure as hell not going to treat them as such.
Shiri2008-06-02 13:23:32
I think the weights for most objects were just completely guessed at here. I don't know if they still do but Moondancer-summoned maidens weighed about 200kg.

Yeah, I never quite understood how something that small weighed so much.

Starsuckers weigh +400 pounds.
o__o() Get back to me on that one.
Though, if you want to be picky, I know some MUDs have it that the heavier the items you have, compared to your size, the slower you go.

Centaur used to weigh less than miniature ponies, as well.

No more sweetgrass for the centaurs.

Um you're asking about shields? What about a single field plate that will fit a faeling as well as an igasho? At least this is a text MUD. I always find it bizarre in video game RPGs when you take armour off a guy and put it on a female and you can see it perfectly conform to all the curves.
Not that I mind

Speaking of shields, on my to-do list is asking to be able to forge shield holsters (to enable draw/sheathe for shields also) so you can switch between sword/shield or sword/sword pretty effectively, mostly for flavour.
Bashara2008-06-03 11:42:48
Really, this is like arguing that chainmail should be weighted higher than greatrobes so that there would be a reason for Guardians to wear it instead of the robes. Personally, I think it makes more sense for warriors to be able to wield greatshields and everyone else is stuck using normal ones, but then again, greatshields are kind of useless when you consider the fact that warriors are an offensive class.

Yes please

You aren't taking into consideration the circles of experience idea. In Lusternia, levels are steps of mortality that we all climb. It's part of what separates a regular denizen from a player. Just assume that me being considered 'Celestial' allows me to do unique things like carry 1000X my body weight as a faeling.
Xavius2008-06-03 14:46:33
If we're really going for realism, a shadowlord faeling, who is strong enough to carry a tower shield, could carry one while hovering in mid-air and get more protection from it than anyone else because he's smaller than his shield, and an unspecced faeling carrying a kite shield would also have full body coverage.
Or we can just leave it alone.
