So my lovely little Casio EX-S770 got really hot at my friend's wedding, and it doesn't turn on any more, and neither of the batteries I have for it will charge in it (the charge light doesn't come on, and the camera doesn't even turn on on the dock). I'm mildly annoyed because I don't use it much, so I didn't bother keeping the receipt or sending in the warranty form, and CompUSA (where I bought it) is, of course, gone. Oops.
So, since there are a lot of you, and you often have good opinions on things (especially when Lusternia isn't involved ), I ask you this:
1) Any idea what the average digital camera repair usually costs?
2) Is it worth repairing, or should I go shopping for a new one?
3) Any camera recommendations? Compact is handy, but I find myself longing for optical zoom better then 3x every now and then.

Hehe, I figured you'd post, and its good you did because I forgot which camera it was you raved about. Will definitely consider.

Anyone else have a camera they really like? I don't like to bump my threads, but I feel like people have opinions that they aren't sharing.

I am very fond of the Nikon D300 but I am guessing you don't want to spend a thousand on a camera.
And yes D40s are amazing my boss and I recommend them to clients who want to get into photography.

One concern I have about the D40 is its relatively low megapixels compared to... pretty much everything else. I've heard that that number doesn't mean as much as most people think, but how would the 6.1 megapixel picture compare to the ~8 megapixel pictures I've been taking? Would they not enlarge as well or something?

incase nothing in that helped you out.
yes there will be a small difference because you had a relatively high MP camera the lower MP camera will seem grainier but in reality the pictures should look fine.

Ah, makes sense, thanks

Looking at the D40 still... I see the zoom lens listed as 18-55mm, so that means 3x zoom, right? Thats not really enough, so I'd have to get another lens... if I were to get another lens, would that replace the 18-55mm or would it be in addition to the 3x zoom?

oh right um depends on where you buy i think i will find out
and how much more then 3x zoom would you like?

consulting my insomniac boss she says that the D40 has a crop factor of 1 1/2 the lens should shoot more like a 4x zoom but she also says that you should go to a store and try lenses out.
so yes the lens zoom is 3x but the camera makes it into a 4x. so i don't know how much more then 3x you would like so i cant recommend any lens other then what she said
but once you get into SLRs there isn't really x amount of zoom it more matters on how high your aperture is
you would want a 2.8

this is a good kit. I don't know how much you are willing to spend but if you want your camera to still work a week after you buy it i would go with a site that has at least a 3 star rating
whew 10 whole minutes of doing something *wipes forehead*
