Well, although it's probably satire, it's a pretty poor joke. Some people are really offended by it. Far-Right probably loves it.

Me, I don't think it's a big deal. Don't think it's really that funny, but I think people need to chill out a little. I looks like a joke about the retards who suddenly forgot what a bounce/pound is when Barack did it. Terrorist Fist-jab, indeed.

Aha, I couldn't figure it out but Lowe is definitely right. I didn't recognize them since the likenesses of Barack and Michelle are just not that great in this picture.

I'm not really sure which angle it's supposed to be interpreted from though - obviously the "terrorist fist-jab" thing is right-wing, but the comic is so ridiculous and overdone (the flag in the fireplace is an amusing touch) that it could well be a left-wing satire.

I figured it was Dubaya cause of his monkey looking face that cartoonist usually draw.

Its obviously an attempt to make light of any criticisms that have been aimed at Barack and his wife. Its the New Yorker, not Mad. Always been a bit too pompous for my tastes.

Well, not any criticism. More like the one that he's part of a terrorist cell because he and his wife did a fist pound in public. Other than that, I don't really know much about the magazine.

I have a hard time with this, because if the New Yorker published a cover with a picture of 1930s era racial stereotypes, it would appear to be mocking the race, not the existance of the stereotype.

If it wasn't the New Yorker that published this, nobody would even believe what the artist has to say about the piece.

It really makes me wonder. (if someone photoshoped out New Yorker and instead put in "Fox Magazine" or "Mad Magazine" I wonder how it would change the meaning of the picture)

To me this is just a case of the New Yorker thinking its smarter than everyone else. (Like usual)

According to the artist, each "icon" is a different critisim.

I actually didn't even know people were making anything of the fist pound. Before your post I had thought hte fist pound was about him being a black person with "Streat cred" rather than a "sofisiticated politician".. but who knows with these things.

Really makes me curious on a number of levels.

Indeed, that's the thing. There are many people who're genuinely angry and offended by that, even though it's (probably) intended as satire of certain right-wing sentiments. I think the New Yorker genrally plays liberal politics though, so some people are giving them the benefit of the doubt. I don't think it was a smart move for the magazine to make, from any angle.

If it was the National Review or something, things would've been alot different though.

Though, as you said, there are some racial stereotypes in that picture that are hard to ignore, considering the fact that Michelle Obama has never, in my knowledge, sported an afro.

wtf.gif

I don't have audio, so I could only see the text but umm yeah... heh.

Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if the artist is doing what he says he is doing. I can't help but feel that the image was created indepentand of the magazine, and could have been published by anybody willing to pay for it.

To me its a really nasty picture, not to be excused.

The way you satire other people's propaganda is by showing a picture of someone drawing /writing the propganda, not by reprinting it yourself. (just my opinion)

Please, don't try and make a statement about a country because of one image.

As for the image, as it is the New Yorker I am willing to swallow that it is meant to be satire. The problem is that it is terrible satire, nothing in the picture indicates that it is meant to be a joke or a mockery of right-wing extreamist ideas.

Well, let's be honest, it isn't really just one image. I don't think America is retarded, but I do think the mass media there has certain mental disabilities. Maybe a learning disorder, ADD, Tourrets, Dementia, that type of stuff.
Arix2008-07-14 21:51:10
Can you imagine Bill O'Reilly with Tourettes?

because I can
Unknown2008-07-14 21:59:37
Sure, I will gladly say the American mass media is based around scandle, violence, and inflammatory remarks. If it bleeds, it leads. I am just saying you can not just say a country is retarded based on the media.
Acrune2008-07-14 22:04:59

Moiraine2008-07-14 22:10:12
I'm not saying the country is retarded based on an image.

It's that anyone cared enough about a hand gesture common to America as a whole performed by Obama, then equated it to terrorism, and now the country will debate the image, the gesture and how exactly it connects to terrorism. Sure, the media started it, but the country as a whole is going to go with it. You know it will.

Someone get the giant sippy cup, please.

Editted, I was raving just a little before.
