Armour type         Archetypes which may wear them
-----------         ------------------------------
Leather             Wiccan, Druid, Bard
Scalemail
Chainmail           Guardian
Great Robes and     Any
* Splendor Robes    Tailors
Field plate and
* Full plate        Warriors

So we have all these spiffy armour types, but the only ones that are really being used are fieldplate/fullplate by warriors and .... greatrobes by anyone else.

Is there even a point for leather, scale and chain anymore? I don't really see any... (maybe cheap armour for newbs... but do we really need 3 types for that? )

I'd really like if there was a use for leather, chain and scale.. I'm just not sure how to fit them in.

A leather vest and leggings make for fabulous begging as they mark one as only nondescript.

No incentive to use the other armours at all. Which really stinks, but if anything this will only be reinforced by the imrpovements to robes that are apparently coming.

I have always been of the view that enchanted robes being just a magical version of armour was just silly. There have also been many suggestions put forth over the last three years, since practically day one on how this methods renders all forged armours but two(now one) useless. In my opinion, enchanted robes should have their blunt and cutting resistances removed completely, and instead be made to allow them to be worn over armour, providing the wearer with more magical resistances. (All four proofs, perhaps, or just plain magic resistance) This would make it so that tailors will still get their business, enchanters will still have their enchanting businesses, and forger could get a bit more business.

That sounds interesting actually, though I'd go for the regular 2 proofs of a specific type on each greatrobe. Splendors would get 4 proofs and (possibly) a +10 or whatever to cutting/blunt.

However, that would also mean that the stats of leather, scale and chain would need to be re-evaluted. Right now monks have the choice between robes and leather for example, and quite plainly robes are -vastly- superior to leather in terms of stats. Since all damage is basically already balanced around robe-type armour (and -not- worse armour) those armour types would all need quite a buff.

I like Neuf's idea, and the monk team's trying to figure out a way to help monks tank a bit more anyway.

I think they should actually implement the leather > robes for acrobatics thing. This will do two things. One, it'll promote the use of leather. Two, it'll promote the use of psychometabolism. happy.gif

Chainmail Leggings can be worn under Greatrobes.
I <3 having legs = 100+ DP with Halo and Symbol.

What about mages? What would they wear if great robes suddenly lost their use? The idea of geomancers and aquamancers running around in chain or scalemail is silly.

I think this is more about making leather and chain useful as opposed to nerfing greatrobes. My understanding is mages have a hard enough time tanking as it is, no?
Lorick2008-07-17 19:24:54
Well, everyone has trouble against artie warriors, they eat up robes. That said, how do you think they would do against other types of armor that have less average defense?

That sounds like a bug.

Have you bugged it?

Changing that was sort of the point .........................................
Lorick2008-07-17 19:36:23
I understand, you want to make lower grade armors more useful. The problem is, damage is scaled around robes, and proper equipment can really hurt robes, which would in turn dominate the lesser armors.

Nope. Made sense to me. Think about the way robes are, you'd have plenty of space at your legs! Still, if it's a bug, they know about it now!

Depending on the robes, you'd have plenty of space on your chest, too (there are many very loose-fitting robes). Further, you'd be able to wear leather and scalemail as well, and robes are intended to already be pretty decent armour on their own. Robes + mail == higher defense than fieldplate, which is just a bit of an issue.

Sounds like a bug. You definitely can't wear leather leggings under greatrobes.

Did you even read the previous posts in this thread? Since that point too, I specifically addressed.

In summary though, the point -wasn't- to nerf the armour of any class, but rather to find a use for those armour types that currently have none (-including- changing those armour types to be useable with the current dmg / armour scaling).
Sylphas2008-07-17 20:00:25
If we make them useful, any chance we get decent looking designs? Can you even submit designs for leather and such? I know the set sitting in my pack all have one or two line generic descriptions, and it's kind of lame.
