So, does this bother you?

I'm just curious about the feelings of the general public. I don't know how to make a poll, so just reply as you wish.

Let's say you are a semi permanent part of your city/commune. Well established. And you find out that one of your city/commune/guild/order's enemies has an alt in your city/commune/guild/order. However, this alt isn't there to cause trouble, spy, or such, but merely to play the game, and all that. Active in said org, and so on.

1: Does this bother you in any way?

2: Do you tend to hold things like that against them?

3: Would you, once you found out, try to avoid that person?
Casilu2008-07-23 23:00:27
No, times three.
Arix2008-07-23 23:02:14
When you make a new topic, there's a bit right under the subject space that says 'click here to manage this topic's poll'. I think it has to be in the Polling Place segment though

No I would not, to all 3, and anyone who does is stupid.

EDIT: In fact, I'd take it as a good time to get to know that person.

This of course assumes this player was able to actually role play and was not abusing seconds. The alts that are created to play the game from a different point of view are great. It is always a pleasant surprise to see someone able to take on multiple roles.

That said I more often come across people who can not resist maintaining their old point of view. You will constantly see these 16 year olds who know everything about the world already and often take up some stupid contrary point of view and question everyone and everything. Those kinds of alts annoy me and I will pointedly refuse to engage them and if they are bad enough I will issue them.

On the other side of things if you are playing an alt I find it is best to not inform others who your main is. Despite best intentions people often will change how they act around you once they know. You should play your alt as a stand alone, making a point to meet new people and do new things. If you feel like you need to drop names to get ahead or gain respect you are playing an alt for the wrong reasons.

What Enthralled said.

As a side note, no one thinks they fit Enthralled's second paragraph there, but some people do fit it, so if people keep getting pissed off or disdainful about your "legitimate alt" that's probably why. Asking dumb pointed questions about everything is another way to make everyone figure it out.

I would make their life HELL!

I kid, I kid. I don't care, as long as they were like... sitting on their alt, find out we're about to do a raid so they jump on their main and get a defense standing there waiting, then I'd find out a way to make their life hell.
Furien2008-07-24 01:30:24
No to all three.

In fact, I found out OOCly that someone who had her character in Glomdoring has an alt that's actually my IG friend, and she's nowhere near that ungodly low forum-rp bar expectations I set for most members of Glomdoring.

(Except Ried.)
Shishi2008-07-24 04:28:37
I've had alts everywhere, whenever I've told someone who my main is, or who my other characters are they usually say something like "really?" and then nothing changes, except for an OOC comment every once in a while on your main after you do something with them. Actually, I have one from a long time ago! (yes I keep these things)

As long your not there just to be a bother, or abuse your alts, you are pretty much cool with everyone I find. It actually gives a cool insight on what the other side is like, and that they aren't all just evil griefers bent on ruining the game for you, and just people playing to have fun.

No, it doesn't bother me at all. Since I have played other IRE MUDs and even other orgs in Lusternia in the past, I know a lot of the people from other perspectives, which generally allows me to play without too much prejudice. Alts that allow you to meet and see the other people remove some of the unreasonable hate you might cherish.

For example, I had a long-lasting grudge against Xenthos until I started playing a Glom and realized exactly the situation he had been dealing with. Now having played a Seren in the past, I can play my character correctly without feeling emotion OOC that makes me want to beat one of you up. <3
Nyir2008-07-24 04:48:54
I don't really understand why it should bother me. People are playing a game, and if they make an alt like that, it's to play the game from another perspective. I guess that since I'm just agreeing to what everyone else said, I'll play devil's advocate: there is a chance that the person playing the alt in question might not be able to keep the two characters totally separate. I'm of the opinion that if that's the case, you wait for that to happen rather than assume everyone with an alt is going to be that way.
Valestrix2008-07-24 05:03:36
Doesn't bother me, I have a way of treating most everyone mostly the same anyways.

When it comes down to it, I am neutral to nearly everyone, and most circumstances don't shift this much. I rarely hold any sort of grudge or actual dislike for someone, especially if I don't know that person from enough perspectives.

Typically though for the most part, things happen, I react and that is what matters. I don't take some big emotional connection from it, especially when I'm aiming to have fun. I aim to only take things as seriously as I must, rather than take everything as serious as I can.

This even extends OOC'ly, I have difficulty connecting with anyone to an extent that their actions end up impacting me on an emotional level. I guess it is sort of a positive and a flaw, really. Besides that, I love humanity and am a person who refuses to remain unhappy, so I'd rather be friendly in general. happy.gif

I just play for fun, not play to dislike anybody.
Unknown2008-07-24 05:09:53
I just have fun. And hope that when npeople realize it's me (again) they won't be angry about it.

And alt's are just good fun all in all. Espcially when I find out how many times our paths have crossed through various alting.

Or maybe I just switch around too much.

Psh I was a glommie and I take offense to that! Last time I RP with you, you overgrown weevil!

Oh and no to all three. If you know something OOC, it needs to stay OOC. I'll admit that I'd avoid them (#3) if I knew it was like...Munsia or Talkan. Mostly because I know they don't RP and I would probably break character around them.
Fania2008-07-24 06:36:27
Personally I don't care how many alts a person has. I know the alts of a lot of people, some are guild/city mates an some are not. I genuinely try to treat the alt as a different person. I do this because I hope when someone comes up as an alt that they play this character differently than their other character(s). There are people who fail horribly at this and there are those who do quite well. I have found, however, that when a person is a jerk or annoying with one character, they are often a jerk or annoying with all their second character. Enemies I don't see in the same way. They are enemies to my city so of course they aren't going to be nice to me. I don't blame their alt for what their other character(s) do.
Daganev2008-07-24 06:57:19
1. Yes
2. no
3. no

It always bothers me when I find out about alts. I like to pretend that there are thousands of people who play, not just hundreds.
Selverad2008-07-24 09:39:54
I have one in each city, and I think people who have dealth with Selverad and Camerick can attest to the differences between the two.

I've never had anyone admit to an alt to me before, probably because before Camerick, most people didn't realize my characters existed (not much sway in the big, or small, scheme of things), but I don't think it would bother me at all, especially having done it myself.
Aison2008-07-24 09:56:46
It bugs me to find out about alts.

I make them so I can be in a good mood when I get on my main. But I am still the annoying, misbehaving person sitting at the keyboard. To me, the same applies to everyone.

I like to separate IC/OOC though, but sometimes feelings overrun logic and I slip when in regards to alts.
