My fiance is seriously considering getting this game. I've heard nothing but bad about it, but he won't listen to reason. So what are the overall thoughts about it? Is it a good game? A bad game? Has anyone even played it, and if you did, what did you think about it?

It's all right.
Not amazing, but certainly not bad. It doesn't suck you in and get you as addicted as WoW does, but it can be fun to go bashing and make a PvP character.
It sort of captures the pvp spirit of FPS games like Unreal Tournament in RPG form. I'd say get it. Free to play online anyway.

I have no good idea why you've heard nothing good about it. Probably the same reasons people hear a lot of bad about WoW: it's popular and people don't like that. (2nd most popular, albeit by a large margin after WoW, I understand.)
It's a great game with an interesting world, tries pretty hard to avoid grinding for the basic game completion (totally fails when it comes to eye of the north title tracks etc. though), diverse classes most of which have a use, enjoyable PVP, and no subscription model. I play it a lot with Alianna, Rinaari and a couple of her friends and it's pretty fun. Need to find a competent guild to accept R0s for HAing though.
EDIT: Post made no sense, thanks Xenthos

I can't entirely say why it is, but I've had troubles with MMORPG's in the fact that they generally don't keep me very long at all. This includes WoW, FFXI and some others.
However, Guild Wars I actually played for a pretty long time and would have kept playing if I had the means. I don't think it is a bad game at all, I'm waiting till Guild Wars 2 before I get back into it at all again though. It might be that I liked the fact it had a specific story to it, and most of the time you weren't even really forced to group with other players to make it through. Though some missions were pretty much impossible or really hard with an AI group.
I never really was able to play a lot of the other 'stand alone/expansions' though, I mostly played the original one that came out. Still, this game had something for me personally that kept me better than those other MMORPG's, so eh.

I found every single mission was possible with no group as long as A) you had nightfall, because heroes are a billion times better than henchmen if you don't fail at configuring skill setups for them, and you're not in hard mode.

I didn't have nightfall.
That said, I found that most missions were quite possible with 'no group'. There was only a rare few that seemed to be otherwise, like for example this one where you had to defend/take over these 4? or so different things with enemies coming at you to take them over too. I wish I remembered more detail than that, but anyways since they were AI with me, I couldn't split them up to aid in taking these over and etc. which made it very difficult to actually do. I ended up going with a group for that one.
Most of the time though, it just might require some thought on how to proceed, and on a good point you can rely on the computers not being the 'best' but they are at least under your control/lead (unlike human players potentially). So as long as you played it intelligent enough, you could certainly get by.

There are two nightfall missions like that (Dzagonur Bastion and Sekelbeh Something) but I don't remember any like it in Factions/Prophecies. Hm. Either way, those missions are indeed a bitch, I needed not just 1 but 3 other human players for Dzagonur (and it still took a few tries.)

I enjoy the game. I'd say let your fiance check it out.

I loved guild wars... I just was unwilling to buy the expasions, and so I've stopped playing.
